Maybe WOS87 can double check for me, but since 1986, only one state champion has failed to make the playoffs the following year. The 1990 Pemian panthers went 7-2-1 after winning it all in '89. Marshall won a title in 1990 and made the playoffs in '91 with a 4-5-1 record.

How far will the 2007 champions go? Trinity seems to be on track for another long season. They went 11-1 after winning it all in '05.

Katy's record so far after winning the big one:

98: 15-0(the infamous DQ year)
01: 8-4
04: 12-2
08: ??

The last 4 teams to beat Katy:
06 Cy-Falls(28-21)...made it to state game
05 SLC(34-20) in State game
04 Clear Lake(35-34)
03 Lufkin(35-14)..Katy won state.

Besides SLC,who are the last teams to beat Trinity? Pretty sure it had to be some state contenders.

I'm thinkin' Tyler Lee missed the playoffs in 2005 after winning div 1 in 2004. Not sure on your last question about Trinity but Lee beat Trinity in the semifinal that same year (2004).

Yeah, Tyler Lee didn't make the playoffs in '05.

As far as Trinity goes,
2000: Bi-district, Arlington Lamar 21 Trinity 14
Lamar would lose in semi-finals to John Tyler

2001: Semi-finals, Lufkin 27 Trinity 23
Lufkin went on to win State

2002: Bi-district, Arl. Lamar 35-14
Lamar would lose in Region 1 finals to Midland, who would lose 33-32 at State against Judson

2003: Bi-district, Arl. Lamar 28 Trinity 14
Lamar would lose in the semi-finals to the Woodlands

2004: Semi-finals, Tyler Lee 28 Trinity 7
Tyler Lee went on to win State

2005: State Champions

2006: Area, Southlake Carroll 22 Trinity 21
We all know what Southlake did, and what Trinity would have done had they beat Carroll

2007: State Champions

I guess I'd agree with Trinity only going out against state contenders, considering no one they lost to lost earlier than the state semis.

1992: State Championship, Judson 52 Trinity 0

1993: Semi-finals, Plano 12 Trinity 0
Plano would lose to Judson 36-13

1994: Bi-district, Flower Mound Marcus 42 Trinity 13
Marcus would lose in the area round

1995: Bi-district, Lewisville 24 Trinity 7
Lewisville would lose in the area round

1998: Region semi-finals, Duncanville 34 Trinity 26
Duncanville went on to win State

1999: Bi-district, Lewisville 17 Trinity 13
Lewisville would lose in the area round

Permian would have qualified for the playoffs in 90 but they had been turned in by OHS that summer for conducting "illegal" practices during the summer time.

Before Permian beat Trinity last year, the last teams to defeat Trinity were
Carroll in 06 who won state
SGP in 05 who lost to Plano in area round who lost to Carroll in regional finals.
Trinity lost to Tyler Lee in the 04 semis and Lee won state that year as well.
I know Trinity also lost to I-Mac in 04 as well as I believe Midland Lee and somebody else.

That was when chaos started hitting the program.
Too much politics gettign involved and parents eventually getting their way since mean Coach Brittan was yelling at little junior too much.
That Marcus team had talent but the internal problems were nothing to be desired. It was a shame they finished 5-5 that year and missed the playoffs. They were good enough to win district that year over The Colony.

Duncanville also missed the playoffs in 99 I believe after winning state in 98.
Funny thing is Duncanvilel had a better regular season record in 99 than they did in 98

Is Judson that one team to not make the playoffs the following year?
2001 they won state and 2002 they missed it.
I know 2005 they went to state and missed it in 2006 after Reagan beat us in a game where winner moves on.

Well I checked and the 1990 thing was right Permian missed that year so 2 teams missed.

It is pretty interesting to look at the most recent losses that various programs have suffered... I compiled several tables just like the one below for quite a few teams a couple of years back and I'm posting the one for WO-S now as an example as it's currently the only one I can find. I know I did one for SLC and Lufkin as well as several other teams so I'll add them on when I do eventually track them down.

As this was compiled in 2005, to make it complete you would only have to add 3 losses:

2007 - lost to #6 ranked eventual 3A Quarterfinalist (13-1-0) Waco La Vega 12-20
2007 - lost eventual 4A Bi-District loser (6-5-0) Bay City 12-15
2006 - lost to #3 ranked eventual 3A Quarterfinalist (13-1-0) Giddings 13-21

In the past 23 years (1985-2007):

WO-S has lost only 5 games to non-playoff teams (none this decade)
WO-S has lost only to 2 teams that ended the season with losing records
No school has beaten WO-S more than 5 times (Jasper and Nederland have won 5 times each)
They've lost to 6 State Champions, 3 State Finalists, 1 State Semifinalist, and 10 State Quarterfinalists (That's 20 out of 47 or 43% of the total)
18 losses were to teams that were ranked in the Final AP Poll (end of regular season before playoffs begin)
20 losses were by less than 7 points
29 points was the most points scored in a losing effort (against Wimberley)

http://members.aol.com/cboehme/private/wos20yearlosses.jpg

And back in 1985 the only loss of the season was to #1 ranked eventual 5A State Champion (16-0-0) Houston Yates 6-19

As far as largest classification state champs that failed to qualify for the playoffs the following year, it's real easy to figure out if you just sort the playoff game database the correct way:

It happened 4 years in a row from 1937-1940 which is the most consecutive years in which a defending state champ failed to qualify. I count 14 times of it happening in the past 40 seasons (1968-2007)

One team per district era (1920-1981)
1920 Champ Cleburne
1920 Champ Houston Heights (Reagan)
1923 Champ Abilene
1924 Champ Dallas Oak Cliff (Adamson)
1927 Champ Waco High
1928 Champ Abilene
1929 Champ Port Arthur Jefferson
1931 Champ Abilene
1937 Champ Longview
1938 Champ Corpus Christi Miller
1939 Champ Lubbock
1940 Champ Amarillo
1942 Champ Austin High
1944 Champ Port Arthur Jefferson
1947 Champ San Antonio Brackenridge
1948 Champ FW Arlington Heights
1948 Champ Waco High
1950 Champ Dallas Sunset
1950 Champ Wichita Falls
1952 Champ Lubbock
1953 Champ Houston Lamar
1959 Champ Corpus Christi Ray
1960 Champ Corpus Christi Miller
1961 Champ Wichita Falls
1964 Champ Garland
1965 Champ Odessa Permian
1966 Champ San Angelo Central
1968 Champ Austin Reagan
1973 Champ Tyler John Tyler
1976 Champ San Antonio Churchill
1978 Champ Houston Stratford
1981 Champ Richardson Lake Highlands

Two team per district era (1982-1989)
1984 Champ Beaumont French
1988 forfeited Champ Dallas Carter
1989 Champ Odessa Permian

Three team per district era (1990-2005)
1990 Champ Marshall
1995 Champ San Antonio Roosevelt
1997 Champ Flower Mound Marcus
1998 Champ Duncanville
2002 Champ Converse Judson
2004 Champ Tyler Lee

Four team per district era (2006-2007)
None

Yeah, it was DeSoto...I remember now because we lost our first two games that season against Midland Lee and then DeSoto. I wasn't a happy camper.

But hey, we went far in the playoffs, and did the same thing that happened to Permian last season....beating a team in the regular season that would later beat you in the playoffs and then win state (Tyler Lee)....:D

And just to add to that, I was also happy to get away from the Arlington Lamar curse as well...

I don't have the recent years compiled for Permian, and it probably wouldn't be very pretty anyway, but I did find this blurb from an old post of mine quite a while back:

In the 27 seasons from 1965 through 1991 Permian lost 36 games on the field.
50% of those losses were to three teams, all district opponents:

9 losses to Midland Lee (2 of those to the 1983 state finalists)
5 losses to Abilene Cooper
4 losses to San Angelo

That leaves 18 more losses:

7 to eventual State Champions - Austin Reagan(x2), Plano(x2), PNG, Yates, Dallas Carter
1 to eventual State Finalist - Plano
1 to eventual state Semifinalist - Arlington Sam Houston
2 to eventual state Quarterfinalists - Euless Trinity and Marshall

2 to Amarillo Tascosa in non-district
1 to Lubbock Monterey in non-district
1 to Galveston Ball in non-district
1 to Amarillo in non-district
1 to Midland in district play
1 to John Tyler in non-district

That's a pretty impressive count for a span of 348 total games played.
