The Denton ISD and the DMN have now confirmed that the district does use negative points in applying the second tiebreaker (point differential). For example, if Team A beats Team B by 7 points, Team A gets +7 and Team B gets -7. Earlier, the rule had been interpreted to only consider positive points. The confusion resulted from the wording of the rule that uses "positive" points, "negative" points, and "net." Everyone now agrees that positive and negative points are calculated.

Playoff Scenarios:

1. DR beats KFR
GV beats CH

DR at 6-1 is in.
GV at 5-2 is in.
KFR and CH at 4-3 are out.

2. DR beats KFR
CH beats GV

DR at 6-1 is in.
GV, KFR, and CH are all tied at 4-3. KFR has +3 points (+10 from win over CH and -7 from loss to GV), GV has +7 points (+7 from win over KFR), and CH has -10 points (-10 from loss to KFR). Therefore,

a. GV is in if it loses by 3 points or less.
b. CH is in if it beats GV by 14 points or more
c. KFR is in if neither a or b happen.

3. KFR beats DR
GV beats CH

DR, KFR, and GV are tied with 5-2 records.
DR and KFR are in because the most points GV can have is -7 (-14 from loss to DR and +7 from win over KFR), while DR can have no less than 0 (+14 from win over GV and -14 from theoretical loss to KFR) and KFR can have no less than -6 (-7 from loss to GV and +1 from win over DR).

4. KFR beats DR
CH beats GV

DR and KFR are in with 5-2 records. GV and CH are out with 4-3 records.

Conclusion:

GV makes the playoffs and SLC goes D1 if:

a. DR beats KFR AND
b. GV beats CH or loses by 3 or less points.

Sorry for the confusion.

here is a hypothetical situation. If you are the Grapevine coach and you already know that DR has beaten KFR and you are down by five points with only enough time for one last play. You are on the two yard line and know that if you kick a field goal you go to the playoffs, but lose the game. On the other hand you could go for it and win the game or lose, by more than three and miss out on the playoffs. What do you do?

Interestingly, the DMN (Tim MacMahon) makes that scenario the subject of its lead story on high school football today. He questions several coaches - including Coach Mullins at Grapevine - on whether they would protect a playoff spot by not trying to win the game. Not surprisingly, several different opinions.

Also, according to the DMN, looks like Ponder will play for CH.

no credible coach would do anything other than play for another game. would a coach eschew a fg in ot to win in favor of a td. before ot, coaches frequently had a tete a tete late in close games to determine official stats so they could make play selection decisions accordingly. they all have the tie breakers in mind. ch knows they are down 14-0 at the kickoff and will play accordingly.
