View Full Version : WE NEED 1 STATE Champion in all CLASSES

I don't understand why we continue to have 2 state champions. Whats wrong with having 1 extra week of Playoffs. You can get rid of zero week have the playoffs start 1st Friday in November give all district champs a bye and have 2nd and 3rd district teams play first round and crown1 state champion the Saturday before Christimas in a host city like Dallas or Houston.
I guess that makes to much sense.
I remember the days of only 1 district champ making it prior to the 82 season. Then 2 then 3 per district. Now I here theirs going to be 4 teams go to the playoffs. If that happens their will be at least 30% of teams with a losing record. Especially with districts with only 6 teams. You could see a 2-8 team in the playoffs. What a Joke.
Any other good ideas to crown 1 state champ?

They only have one champion in all the other sports - why can't they figure it out for football?

I don't think this setup that they have now is bad or anything, but one state champ would be nice. I think its safe to say that if you've won the division 1 or division 2 state championship then you can call yourself a state champion without any doubters.

Whatever happened to that superbracket idea from last year? I liked that idea because it has 1 champion and it actually rewards the district champion. The system right now is a joke because there is no difference between the district champion and #2 or #3 teams except for the acknowledgement of it.

That's pretty much the way they do the playoffs for all the other sports except football. Come on UIL - use your heads!!!

or the winners of D1 and D2 could just play eachother?

i dont know that i like the 4 team format. but i do firmly support 3 teams getting in. often there are 3 way ties for 1st place. Pflugerville got left out in the late 80s (when still in 4A) when they just had 2 spots. they went to the net points or whatever and we got left out even though we had a win over 1 of the teams that went. i'm sure that happens year in year out to many teams.
i would like to see the two divisions play each other. there's no good argument against it that i can see and it'd make the UIL even more money. and that's what it's all about, right? :D

Hello preacher, meet the choir...
This 4 teams to the playoffs deal is like the BCS in college football...nobody likes it, but there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it.

Does the UIL not listen to the schools that is represents?
sorry if my UIL questions are kinda stupid, but I really only know about it what I read here..This website is my solitary source for Texas football...

the UIL does listen b/c the ADs or football coaches all had to vote on this new format. clearly at least half of them want it. i think they voted it down at the 4A level

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. The AD's and administrators love the idea. More teams in the playoffs means more money, so they're all for it. The "wanting more kids to experience the playoffs" stuff is disturbing. Making the playoffs should be an accomplishment, not a reward for mediocrity. If they want to experience the playoffs, they should try working harder and winning more of their games.

I agree. What's going to happen is the 4th place teams are going to get blown out during the playoffs - then what happens to their fragile psyches?

Amazingly....it took 12 posts on this thread before the key word was
ever mentioned.....money!
ktchamp97 mentions it 2 posts above this one I'm typing.
The "almighty dollar" is REALLY the only thing that motivates
the UIL.
The "disguise" that ktchamp points out ...."where doing it for the kids"
is such a farce.
The more "gate receipts" that can be produced....the better.
As for the topic of the thread....I'll agree that things were very
different in the day I attended HS....1978-1982...where only
ONE team per district was able to EARN their way into the
post season.
That was by winning....on the field.
I still remember all the Longview vs. Plano Bi-District
encounters....where BOTH were District Champions
representing their districts.
Ahhh....those were the days.

I could be wrong,i was under the impression that with 4 teams, they can get a better chance at getting real div.1 opponents (bigger enrollment schools)together, instead of a team that should go div.2,playing in div.1.Also,it should add another game to div.1,where both divisions end at the same time. And a better chance that a district champ will have an easier 1st round game.
I also can remember many top ten teams not making the playoffs, from stacked districts.Like #2 in the state New Braunfels, loosing to #1 Gonzales in the 70`s.They most likely should have played for the region crown.
Theres pros and cons on both sides.I do think that high school sports have become more popular because so many programs have a shot to make the playoffs.Especially teams that had key injuries, and have healed up at the end of the season.I myself can remember finishing 2nd in district, and sitting home, would have been nice to make the playoffs.
Major league baseball was the last to add wild cards, and i think it`s added some excitment to MLB.Those 3rd and 4th place teams more than likely wont last long anyways. But,it sure helps for kids comming out the next year, and building on going farther.I think in the long run,the competion level is greater than what it would have been with just one team dominating every year from district. Not to mention that games at the end of regular season mean alot more across the board, because playoff spots are still on the line.

You cannot compare this to MLB. You definitely do not see a 4th place team in the playoffs there either. Only one 2nd place team gets in. I have stated my position on this subject a million times and everybody knows i cannot stand it. It is all about the all mighty dollar and they are spitting on the purity of the game and the regular season. The UIL the coaches and the ad's all played their part. Nothing we can do about it. The perfect scenario is 2 teams per district with 64 teams in the playoffs and 1 champ. If you have 3 teams then you use kt's super bracket proposal. Not going to happen though.

I`m not in any way comparing it MLB,just saying that adding teams,to 100+ years of tradition helped MLB pump more life into the sport.I did say that those 3rd, and 4th place teams dont go far any ways.If your team is that good,it shouldnt matter who you play.I`m sure the championship for SLC,and the Rebels, was just as sweet as the Judsons,Planos,Cueros championships of the ladder UIL system.

Based of what you said first. Why not have 6 classes then? If the biggest 5A in Texas got its arse beat by the smallest 5A in Texas, that just means the better team won.
It seems to me that all DivII is is a "less than" situation. It comes off looking like a 6th classification was decided at the last moments...
You commment about sitting at home when finishing second.. Well, life is that way... I can remember buying lotto tickets and sitting at work the next week because I didn't win. It would have been nice to retire at 25.
Sorry if I come off as being a wise arse.. But I just think it's kind of dumb to have 2 5A champions and those 2 not meet and settle it on the field..
KT. I agree about the money thing. I just kind of figured that was common knowledge that green has something to do with it. Also I agree with you on the working harder part.
And no, you really shouldn't have been more clear. I am prolly the only one here that doesnt understand this stuff with the UIL. I really do hope none of y'all get tired of my questions...

Don't worry about that at all...there's probably plenty of people in Texas who don't know or understand the answers to some of the questions you bring up.

Last year many fan's will say there really was 1 champ because of the way it worked out. Both div2 teams Lufkin and Longview beat Tyler Lee who won the div1 championsip. SLC won the div2 championship and they beat Lufkin who beat Longview and SLC was #1 all year and #1 in the nation. Pretty obvious who the 1 champ was last year. But usually you can never tell and that stinks.
Hey, is anybody else having hell with the board today?? I keep getting cut off over and over??

Yeah, i do! We don't need just one 5A champion, one 4A champion and so on. WE NEED ONE CHAMPION IN THE ENTIRE STATE!!! Cut this BS about 4 teams from each district making the playoffs! District champions make the playoffs! Cut out pre-district games! Each District has 11 teams! All games mean something then! And i know your thinking well those 3A teams cant hang with a 5A team, well how do you know! each year team after team pulls upsets!
Just my opinion! But ofcoure we could just do it for each classification! :)

That is pushing it a bit far!! I could just see a tiny 1a 2a school going up against a 5a power!! That would be sad!! I do wish there they could somehow combine 4a and 5a and have 1 champ. Just a dream though!!

I am not opposed to 4 teams making the playoffs. However, I think in order to make the playoffs, you at least should be 5-5. I don't think a team with a losing record deserves to make the playoffs.
I also like the idea of the Div 1 and Div 2 winners playing each other for the "Texas Cup". I believe they already do this in some classifications in basketball.

You'd think the UIL would do the obvious to make money and let the D1 champs play the D2 champs as the last game of the playoffs. BUT NO - they leave us asking who is the real state champ.

crunked i have watched a lot of hs football in my life at all levels and the best 1a 2a or 3a team would not have a shot in hell vs the 5a powers. Go back in the past and look at the state champs when there used to be no classifications. They were always school's that would have been 4a or 5a in terms of today's enrollment in the finals. The vast majority of the time it would have been a 5a team.
Powerpack's how does even a .500 team that is 4th place in their own district deserve to make the playoffs?? Waste of time!!
