I cant wait for the season to start. It still hurts to think of those 3 losses to Katy, Northwestern and Abilene. If SLC wouldnt have had that safety against Katy and if SLC didnt have those 5 turnovers against NW and if Dodge wouldnt have gotten hurt and IF........er.........IF IF.....IF IF IF IF IF IF!!!!!!!!!;)
It was a great run though. Cant wait for round 2. :notworthy

p.s. the above was sarcasm and admit that SLC had had plenty of 'IFs' go their way also.

Most Carroll fans would readily admit that we have our share of "ifs" go our way. But then, no team manages to have the success that Carroll has attained during the 5A years without some degree of luck as well as physical and mental abilities to go along wit the ifs.

that could only happen in the big wt district. any other district in the state would give you a 6-1 record and a po berth. really if you always win your last 6 games you need balfour's on your speed dial.

In the semifinals against Lufkin it was a controversial fourth down catch by Tre Sellari that kept a late touchdown drive alive.

Chase Wasson's pass bounced off a Lufkin defender but alertly, Sellari stretched out to pull it in - or did he?

A look at the tape revealed he may not have gotten both hands under the ball and it briefly hit the ground. If high school football had instant replay it very well may have been overturned. To his credit he sold it to the referees with a reaction that was very convincing. The Dragons survived by the skin of their teeth, winning 33-30.

I watched the catch again by Selari - and I think it was a clean catch. From the Lufkin camera angle - who really knows. But, Tre sold it, and that helped. The O-lineman that ran up also helped - and I don't know if linemen are smart enough to sell something.

I had never really heard the Selari catch questioned before, other than it was a fortunate play for the Dragons and a very unlucky play for Lufkin. Chandler's TD was much more controversial, IMO.

Yep, it would take one of the largest districts for bad things like that to happen to a team that managed to win its last six games in a a season and yet go nowhere. :(

Me neither. Tre caught the ball on three separate occasions on his way to the ground. Bob has that great photo of the catch with Tre parallel to the ground making the play.

It definitely was in Lufkin. Funny thing was is I watched Chandler practice the move in warm-ups, and I thought "wow, that guy is pretty slick at selling the catch".

The fade route was a bam-bam catch/no catch call. Did he control the ball with one foot in. He was so quick to drop the ball and signal TD the poor back judge had to make an even quicker call.

I give Chandler full credit for selling it, and I always ruled it too close to call.

The other close one was when Shepard and Hansen? both came down with the ball on a pass. Some Lufkin fans screamed int. and some screamed out of bounds. They were both in bounds and both had the ball - tie goes to the offense.

Ok, gotcha - thanks. I never questioned Tre's catch either. My point was the other catches I noted were debated inLufkin as questionable - but I never heard anyone debate the deflected Selari ball as catch/no catch.

andrew said when they started to the ground, shepard had the ball, but they were wrestling for it and shepard let go to signal int, he guessed, so andrew came out of the scrum and handed the ball to the official, so he had no other way to call it.

No it wasn't...not even to the Lufkin fans at the game...video can work wonders, especially after the fact, but it wasn't questioned at the game,as Fav has said...Chandler's catch...yes...but not Tre's...It was a killer because it bounced off of the Lufkin defender...Not because he didn't catch it...

the 05 team had more depth, but for sheer numbers, and iron-men, there is no comparison to the 02 team. i don't think any wrs missed a play due to injury that year, except when andrew got earholed on that cheap shot on the opening kickoff vs macarthur. and except for a little witchcraft, crunked would have missed the arlington game, and likely the cooper game too.

Lets look at some non-stat things.

The '02 team had only been running the passing offense for 2 years, while the '05 team had been running it for 5 years.

The '02 team had to learn the no-huddle spread offense in about six months. But really on had about a month of actually practicing it before the season started. While the '05 team had over 3 years of running the no-huddle offense.

I look at this as the reason the '02 was better. They just flat out new how to play football!

Also, the Wr's a real mix of players. From a 6'7" Fade specialist, to a presciece route runner, to a break away slot receiver.

I don't think you can blame ESPN for lack of D1 players on one team.
Sure the 04 team was televised on ESPN and the 05 on Fox, I just don't recall those two having too many more national games. The 02 team did lay the ground work for those telecast to take place and they seem to have picked up in 06 and more so in 07 when I believe 3 regular season games were televised.
Also, lack of D1 playres does not put one at a disadvantage. One of the best teams to ever play 5A football, the 96 Farmers did not have a single Division 1 recruit.
FWIW, I'd take the 02 team over the rest of the bunch just because of how special they were and how they were playing a bunch of foregin teams to themselves as well. Sure nobody knew what to expect from Southlake that year but the same could be said in reverse when you think about how they didnt know what to expect from the teams there were getting ready to play as well. Plus I just really enjoyed seeing that cocky Arlington High team get put in their place at Dragon Stadium.

That was nice.:D

It was. I was still young enough, turned 21 a few weeks before, to where I got steamed and was ready to jump out of the home side stands and onto the field and start some crap with those Colts.
When that crap happend, I knew that Carroll was going to destroy them.
It just took the Dragons a little longer to deliver the knock out punch than I expected.
Coach Finley has always been that way with his teams though and he got what he deserved once again from the Dragons.

He could never escape us & now he's outta sons to win games for him. To be clear, I am not a Finley fan.

We have the same issue at Hebron between the '02 team and the '05 team.:D

The '05 team won a State Championship, our first. I will take the '02 team though because they were the first Hawk playoff team ever.

Without that group breaking through, the Hawks wouldn't know that they could become a playoff team. Since '02, we have never been out of the playoffs.

The '02 team showed the way after the two prior teams ('00 and '01) had turned in losing records.

Im a katy fan and the thing that was so good about that 05' team was its Defense. Those linebackers shut down our run game.

The Carroll defense is always overlooked. The offense gets all the press but year in and year out the defense has been excellent.

Indeed it was.
There aren't many coaches who I have less respect for than Coach Finley.
What he did to the Cleburne program after her left A-High was brutal.

I loved how both his sons, Clint and Joe John who were incredible football players could never lead him to a state title thanks to the Dragons.

I call that poetic justice. The sons fail to redeem the father. Once again, B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!

Found the 'ole crystal ball in the attic last night and took a look at some of the things we will see in Dragon camp as the boys prepare for the '08 season. So, without further ado, here are my predictions for the pre-season....

* To relieve the overflow of sideline parents and fans at the practice field, the baseball bleachers are opened up as extra seating, setting a one day attendance record for our baseball field.

* Carroll's Math club contributes it's own pre-season prognosticating, proving beyond a shadow of doubt that the '08 Dragons team will be greater than the sum of the '02 and '05 Dragons combined. Crunked9 is not amused.

* The offense units dominate early in pre-season scrimmaging, resulting in Coach Wasson bringing in Ranger Rudy Jaramillo as a one day "hitting" instructor. The defense is not amused.

* Jr K/LB Cade Foster perfects a unique practice drill in which he works on blocking his own kicks.

*Some astute, and some non-astute, fans are heard commenting that "we never wore our sox like that when Dodge was here!"

* We outscore Grapevine by a large margin on the Friday nite scrimmage in front of plenty of faithful.

* There's at least one empty seat, empty in body but not in spirit.

There ya go...GD

if stats like pts per possession, and average starting field position was kept, slc defense would show out much better than they do. slc's ko coverage has been below average, and the punting has been generally terrible for years. puts lots of pressure on the defense.

I know he has for football..I just don't remember one that counts all titles.

I only have tables for 3A and 5A so this would not include all the titles Southlake Carroll has ever won, but quite a few of them... I count 9 in the charts below just in the 14 combined years that SLC was in 3A (1986-1993) and 5A (2002-2007)

5A State Champions in the 10 Major Team Sports since 1980

3A State Champions among the 6 Major Team Sports

As WOS does not include swimming, cross country or golf, his listing does not include such Carroll titles. In its 5A period, the girls have won two state cross country championships and the boys one state cross county title. The girls have also won a state title in golf as have the boys. (5)

If one includes 4A days, there is an additional state team title in boys swimming, baseball and soccer. (3)

WOS has 3A covered, but prior to 3A days, there is a state team title in girls basketball and an additional state title in boys baseball. (2)

This accounts for an additional ten (10) state team titles in athletics for the Dragons.

You better tuck it away if you see that little gator comin' round, we are supposed to get the officers involved if we see any of that.

That kind of tailgating is better left to the college/pro level IMO. While I KNOW everyone on here is a conscientious drinker (NOT as in unconscious!), doing it at Dragon stadium/parking lot can get you banned and arrested. Who wants to miss Dragon football? Also, that type of thing could get tailgating banned at Dragon stadium!:eek::eek:

Tailgating is discussed every year, and I am a big proponent of it. But all it takes is one bad incident.:o
