in reality the game was close till about (i think) 5 min. left in the 4th, but madison was too deep. weslaco gave 'em all they had, and it was close, but it just wasn't enough.

it was a fun game very much a college atmosphere. Purple on both sides and in the overflow, and lots of noise the entire game. Westlaco had a lot of pride and wanted the game but everyone's assessment is true madison just wore Westlaco out and the last 5 min Madison was scoring at will. Andrew Green the DB had a great game playing RB, it would have been interesting to see Thomas or even Miles and what they could have done against Westlaco.
Rivas did everything he could do and was phenomenal just could not carry the whole team.
The drive home sucked.

Madison got beat by Katy 66-21? Madison was not the same team without Devin Thomas. He was rushing for 250 each week and 4 TDs, or something like that.

Harlingen is in the top 20 for most wins in the state, all time. The most wins of any valley program save PI. Most 5-A playoff wins, appearances, district championships, and runs three or more deep in the playoffs. Harlingen needs to prove nothing to anyone in the valley. E-E is the johnny-come-lately that has made hay in the valley's weakest classification (4a) and don't forget it.

when he said #1 in the valley, he wasnt talking all-time Fireman, he was talking about them being voted as the #1 team this season. And E-E has started showing early why they are deserving of that title with the 7on7 success. Where did Harlingen end up last season? Did they win district? Did they win a playoff game? All the while EE was winning its 5 championship in a row and made it to the 2nd rd before losing to Beeville.

Thing is....Harlingen was the best team in the valley that year. We beat up on 5A and went 3 deep in the playoffs. Valley football as a whole has fallen off from the late '80's-'90s. The difference is, back in the glory days of Harlingen/Mission/Edinburg a valley team usually made it respectable in the 3rd round and occasionally won, now it's always a blow-out. The folks in the valley built to many high schools and diluted the talent. They want to believe they are closing the gap, the truth is that it's gotten larger. Just look at the all time playoff scores for confirmation.
Even so, Harlingen's had as many trips 3-deep as any other valley team since the late 1990's.
We're picked to be the best out of our district next year. E-E makes hay in 4A, which is by far the weakest valley classification. La Maquina goes down at Boggus.

Yeah, the gap has widened between San Antonio and the rest of south texas. CC Carroll played Judson tough in the early 90s. Victoria would play tough games in the 3rd round. They would lose, but it was always closer scores than it is now. It got tough for CC/Victoria when they aligned us to play SA in the first rd now. Carroll and Victoria were always in the 3rd round...Vipers can't even make the playoffs now lol...and Carroll can't get passed NISD.
1999 is the last time anyone south of SA went to the semi's and that was Edinburg I believe. That's almost TEN years! Someone needs to step up!

Weslaco definitely had the best chance last year. Mishak Rivas was a hoss!:notworthy That's the last time for a while that someone that blessed with talent will grace the RGV/Laredo area. Maybe the last time south Texas sees that kind of talent for a while. What a year for south Texas backs though! Devin Thomas, Marcus Wright, Mishak Rivas, Trent Rios, Stephen Salinas, Brandon Armstrong, Hollie/Lowson...the list goes on!

please Firebird, you're talking with blinders on. Last year, Mercedes gave Calalle all they could handle. Weslaco East gave FB a run for their money. EE wore out Alice, and lost a close game to a very good Beeville team. times are changing and your claim that 324A is weak IS weak. EE has beaten its fair share of playff teams from the Kingsvilles to PLC.

Give an SA area team a close game and we'll talk. 5A valley teams also used to play well against Coastal Bend programs when we used to meet in the 2nd round of the playoffs. After realignment, we don't play them anymore, because they go north first and get knocked out by SA. The recent spate of valley teams reaching the 3rd round in 5a is due wholly to that realignment---we get to play two games against the valley and Laredo before we meet up with SA. Going three deep was a much bigger deal when you had to beat CC Carroll to get there. Coastal bend football has also fallen behind the rest of the state, btw, especially Calallen.

it makes me wonder if it's also that S.A football has made that big of a jump too. i know that when i think of pearland or trinity, i would NEVER give a valley team the nod over them, but i think they could be competitive in areas without all the hardwear that everyone forgets about.

SA football is still way ahead of the valley. There's still plenty of good football in the Alamo city.
Valley teams could play fine with Laredo, with El Paso, and I believe they'd be OK if they played up on the caprock against Lubbock/Amarillo, though not in the new district which includes Midland/Odessa/Lubbock/Amarrillo/San Angelo. We already know how we would do vs. Coastal Bend, as we all remember the exile years for SB and Harlingen. We were not terrible, but only one valley team made the POs from that district.
CenTex, East Texas, the Golden Triangle....we'd all be at the bottom of the barrel. Since I left the valley I have watched a lot of HS football across the state and the difference is obvious.
A big part of it is the fact that we've built so many high schools....Harlingen had a hard time competing back when it was at 4,000 students, so did La Joya, but we did better. When talent is spread as thin as it is in the valley you shouldn't dilute it.

I was actually surprised by the level of drop off from the Coastal Bend; last year I went to go see Austin Lake Travis play CC Calallen and i was expecting a very close game. Instead Lake Travis coasted to a 38-0 halftime lead and went on to win a lopsided contest. I think the Valley does deserve some credit, as the games (some of them) really arent as lopsided as people say. Lots of offensive fireworks!

I have to agree with Bird. Valley teams making the 3rd round back in the day was bigger than it is now. Valley teams hardly got passed Victoria and CC Carroll back in the day. Now, you face Laredo and another valley team before SA. Meanwhile, Carroll and the rest of the coast bend gets knocked out in Rd 1. The last time anyone from the coastal bend got to the 3rd round was the last time the coastal bend schools faced the valley/laredo teams in the playoffs and that was 2002 when Victoria and CC King went 3 rounds deep. After that, it was one and done for the coastal bend teams because it was San Antonio right off the bat.
Nothing against Valley schools because I just love football in general, but the valley is down there towards the bottom. I've seen games all over the state (like Firebird) and I can tell the difference. I could tell the difference between watching my coastal bend teams growing up and watching San Antonio teams while I lived there 3.5 years. I can tell the difference now between watching DFW teams and San Antonio teams, and there is a difference.

Calallen has just barely been getting by lately. They were unbeaten last season in the regular season but if you looked at their scores they were not impressive wins. I grew up in Victoria when Calallen was making the semis and dominating everyone. The scores were lopsided in all their games. Now they are barely getting by teams. They win, but its no longer the lopsided scores they used to have.
I stopped taking them seriously in the playoffs when they barely could get by Port Lavaca Calhoun. So it didn't surprise me that Lake Travis dominated them.

so they're having an good run, all teams do. just because they've had big size and speed recently doesnt mean theres a huge difference between san antonio, the valley, and the "metromess"?? And no i didnt get to watch it on TV, I think i just saw the ending.

there's a huge-*** difference. 'bird summed it up when he said that the valley diluted it's talent with all the high schools, especially considering how many kids can't/won't/don't take up extra-cirrucular activites for whatever reason (jobs, lack of this, lack of that). it really puts a strain to get the "best" team in a city like brownsville or (in the future you'll see) la joya.

I've seen coastal teams, valley teams, san antonio teams, austin teams, Houston area teams, west texas...etc etc.
Once you see more games statewide then you can compare
Firebird mentioned that Harlingen team a few years ago that was the best in the valley and went 3rounds deep. I saw that team and it looked like a bunch of 5'7 150 pound hispanic dudes. That was a small team, and it was the best valley team that year. However, Harlingen has been a small team lately.
There are some bigger valley teams out there. Harlingen South last year was pretty big, and La Joya usually has a big line. San Benito and Los Fresnos have had good size on the lines lately, too. Where you really notice the difference is in the linebacker/db/wr corps. Usually the valley teams can put out some big OL and DL, but there are none of the big, athletic defenders and tall, speedy WRs that the upstate teams have. That's the key difference. Our most athletic players are tiny.
i fully understand. I seen 6'6 dude in the marching band. ROTC is the way to go for many.
FFA for life. :(
i love football, but i love drumming more so i went with the drumline (notice i didn't say band).
i was in FFA for a year so i wouldnt have to take semester exams for a class :laugh
