I agree, society has "dumbed" down a considerable amount since then. Really a shame if you think about it.

I guess what we have now is the result of trying to make every kid equal with each other.

Wow, what a daunting task it would be to complete that test!

My impression is that everything must be taken is context and in it's place and time. A lot of want the test asks was common knowledge at the time. I still can't believe we don't go into Lowe's looking for a 2.5 meter 2 by 4.

We are not dumber than we used to be; there is just more to know. IMO.

There may be more to know now, but knowing some of the basics is not a bad thing. Go around this site and look at how many people can't spell or punctuate correctly. I include myself in that as well. Hard as I may try to be good with my spelling and such, I know I make mistakes.

Ask a kid sometime to name 10 presidents and see how long it takes them. Anyone should be able to name 10. Start asking them to name states on a blank map. Ask them to name capitols of states...Ask them what river Washington crossed.

I think "we" have all dumbed down a bit...

I take advantage of every opportunity to teach them something.

In line at Jack'n the Box...I tell them to look at the menu and tell me the most expensive item on the menu...or the cheapest...

I taught my daughters all of the state capitals...

I hear a song on the radio...I teach them the words...and tell them who is singing...or who the original artist was that recorded the song...

They are going to be chocked full of information...I am determined to teach them as much as I can.

my parents do the same, when we go on long road trips, and dont feel like watching a movie, playing xbox, listening to music, or what ever else there is, we play a "trivia" game. dad asks us questions and what not. my dad teaches me a lot when were in the car it seems, thats when we have our "father-son" talks. as a kid, i like to learn from adults, not from text books, or in school, but just in a casual conversation, like this website, i learned a lot about more sports than i would learn from just watching sportscenter/reading newspaper

This is a thread from 2005 where I pointed out education in 1895....an 8th grade one in 1895.

They spent almost nothing on education in 1895....yet I doubt that anyone would say we are getting our moneys worth out of today educators, students, and parents....yet they want even more money....ridiculous.
