Should be a great game and I agree with you that it probablywill be a last team with the ball wins the game scenario. I think Westlake takes this though.
btw great preview of the Leander vs P-ville game last week as well

I was on here yesterday and i read all the thing about the hays vs westlake game. And i think it will be a good game but hays should win and i think they will by a good margin. And get ready for either round rock or stony point. But this is for the guy that said hays would be done when they would play Lufkin. If that game was to happen. I know hays is not thiniking of playoffs right now. But just so you know i think they would have a chance against lufkin. And for those people that don't know or don't remeber in 2000 hays played Belton and they where rank #4 in state that year and we beat them. I remember cause i was on that team, so if this game does happen i think they will have a good shot to shock the football world like we did in 2000 and in 96 when hays beat texas city to go to state. Texas city had 4 players that went to UT from that sqaud. So never count out hays cause that is why we play the games to see the best team win . So good luck to all on friday and let get them rebs.
D. :D

We also beat the #7 ranked team in 2003 in the first round of the playoffs. San Antonio Roosevelt, but lost the following week to O'Connor. Guess we'll see what happens.

Special teams will be key in this game. I don't know about Hays' special teams, but our's is pretty sound. Justin Tucker seems to be doing well the last two games but he has only kicked one field goal which was around 30 yards. He has made all his extra points lately and that will be important too. I disagree on the analysis for the punting team however. I don't know about Hays, but we have a great punting unit. Justin Wang can boot punts, I believe he averages over 40 yards per punt. I think the Austin American Statesmen is wrong on that stat (30 yards pet punt) because except for last game, I believe Wang has average over 40 yards per punt in every other game.

Both defenses will have their hands full. I think Hays' defense will struggle more because we have great speed on offense and that's the weakness in Hays' defense. We have a great D-line and linebackers that I think will be able to stop Amadeus.

This should be a nail bitter but I think we will pull off the win.

Did you not see the Punt that was blocked last week? Tucker can't keep a kickoff in bounds. Anyone who has any faith in either kicker for Westlake, or Westlake's special teams overall, has not been paying attention this season, or last season for that matter.

I hear that Wang has taken over kick off duties, and you cannot disagree on his punting ability that will be huge for field position this game. That punt block was the only one all year, he is also being looked at for D1 colleges. Northwestern invited him to their game last week. How can you not have faith in his punting? Tucker has been getting better over the weeks but this game will be a huge test. I'll still hold my breath whenever we attempt a field goal.

He takes too long to get his punt off. His punt's are great, but getting it off quickly can be a huge problem. He had the same problem with his place kicks and that's why he lost that duty. Special teams could be a real Achilles heal for this team.

^^2 years ago to break Westlakes Billion game winning streak against district opponents. I think that record is a national record. And the last time this game was played at Hay's home field Hays won, so yeah this group of Hays Rebels isnt exactly scared of Westlake like every other team in the district is.

Just curious, when's the last time Hays beat Westlake? (no wisecracks about it being tonite ;) ) it was 2003 when hays won at home and cracked westlake's 70+ game winning streak in district...i remember listening to the game on radio that night..2 weeks later san marcos knocked off westlake in OT to win the district title :)

Hays - you played a great game of football. You outplayed Westlake in the first half and played great in the second half! Westlake could not finish in the red zone, Hays would not be denied! Westlake shot itself in the foot with two ill advised passes ie interceptions and a fumbled punt. We knew that Westlake had come back against Bastrop, Austin High, and Crockett. But when Westlake was down 24-6 at the half, it seemed too little too late against a tough team like hays!

To Westlakes credit, they were able to hold Hays to 6 points in the second half and to get within thirteen points with a little over 2 minutes in the game.
Who would have thought that realistically Westlake could score 2 touchdowns for 14 points in less than 2 plus minutes! Hays played great run and pass defense. Defense was so tight, that Nick Foles would have to throw two perfectly thrown passes for touchdowns and meanwhile Westlake defense would have to recover an on-sides kick.

It is too bad that anyone had to lose this game because Hays also played like champions. It's too bad to loose you from our district to 4A. Good luck to you and we'll be rooting for you to go far in the playoffs!

Not that good? Hays is a quality team that was picked to win the game by the folks who run this site and they know something about 5A Football! Westlake won the game overcoming a fumble that Hays took advantage of for a TD and 2 interceptions, one in Westlake’s end zone. They also were playing without their top two running backs. I don’t know how far they will go in the playoffs but what I know from watching over 10 years of Chaps football, I know that these kids may not be the best athletes on the field, but they can play in their system and should always be respected. They showed that again last night.

Congratulations to Hays on a great season and all the best in the playoffs.

WOW - what a game!

The game was one for the ages. Nick Foles threw for over 380 yds with three TDs. His favorite receiver was Staton Jobe who had 7 catches for over 150 yds with his two TDs being the last two scores that won the game. Man that kid is fast! If he's not the 16-5A district MVP, then it's just a travesty.

Westlake overcame a 24-6 halftime deficit, scoring 14 points in the last two minutes, recovering a perfectly executed onside kick in between.

I'm not sure at this point, but I think the Westlake defense may have held the vaunted Amadeus Waters to under 100 yds.

Excerpted from the Austin Statesman for all of you that missed the game.

Westlake ruins Hays' undefeated season

Chaps make comeback in final minutes, win District 16-5A championship.
BUDA — Just when you think Westlake's football mystique is history, the Chaparrals piece together another amazing comeback victory.
Dead and presumed buried after Hays running back Adam DeLeon scored a touchdown to give the Rebels a 30-17 lead with 4:11 to play, Westlake fought back. The Chaps, accustomed to second-half rallies, had a Hollywood comeback up their sleeves.

Quarterback Nick Foles and receiver Staton Jobe connected on a pair of late touchdown passes — the final one with 31 seconds on the clock — to give Westlake a 31-30 victory before an overflow crowd of 8,500 fans Friday night at Bob Shelton Stadium.

The victory gives Westlake (9-1, 7-0) the District 16-5A championship. Hays (9-1, 6-1) was bidding for its first undefeated regular season since 1996.
Foles and Jobe were nearly unstoppable down the stretch, combining on passes of 31, 24, 28 and 7 yards in the final four minutes.

The 24-yard catch was a touchdown that narrowed Hays' lead to 30-24. Westlake's mystique kicked into high gear when Chaparral senior Hudson Penn recovered the ensuing onside kick at the Hays 48 with just over a minute to go. With fans from both sides standing and screaming on every play, Foles, a junior, calmly guided the Chaps to the end zone.

The game-winning drive was capped by Jobe's 7-yard reception on the right side of the end zone. Covered by Hays' defense as the play developed, Jobe found an open gap to his left and Foles drilled a perfect pass into his gut.
Hays regained possession with 31 seconds to go and the game didn't end until Rebels running back Amadeus Waters was dragged down from behind at Westlake's 20 after receiving a pitch following a flea-flicker.

Westlake, which needed second-half rallies to beat district teams such as Crockett and Bastrop, made the comeback behind a strong passing game. With its top running backs sidelined with injuries, the Chaps practically ignored running the ball in the second half, and Foles came through with a 372-yard passing performance.

Jobe, the fastest player on the field, caught seven passes for 129 yards. After his late touchdown catch tied the game at 30, Westlake kicker Justin Tucker booted the game-winning extra point.

Westlake's defense was solid in the second half, allowing only six points. After DeLeon's touchdown with 4:11 to go, it hardly seemed to matter that the extra point was no good.

With the regular season over, Westlake can turn its attention to the playoffs. The Chaps will play a bidistrict game against Pflugerville for the second year in a row. Hays will play a bidistrict game against Round Rock High.

Wow what a great game, and I can honestly say that Westlake earned this more than we did. We pretty much snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Both defenses played great, and without us coming up with huge redzone plays defensively, this game would've been a blow out. You trade in 3 FG's in for 3 TD's and you're up big. Huge turnovers for Westlake and we still couldn't get it done. Special teams really decided this game, from the Westlake kicker going 3/3 on FG's, Our kicker Brandon O'dell missing an extra point and a great onside kick recovery and you arrive at 31-30. Beleive me, we wanted this one really really bad, but it still has no effect on playoffs, it's better to lose once now and get what it feels like before you have to pack up if you lose.
The only thing that gets me upset is the Westlake students just kind of hanging out on the field after rushing the field when the game was over. Some people on here called us classless for doing it on our own field 2 years ago, but we've come full circle and this time it was Westlake fans rushing the field. Great game overal, just wished the outcome would've been different, one Extra Point and a we're heading into overtime. Brandon's been a consistant kicker all year long but has missed under pressure. He missed the game winning field goal as time expired vs. Bastrop and missed an XP earlier in the game. I feel horrible for the kid, but things move on. Good luck to Westlake vs. Pflugerville, i felt confident about P-ville beating Westlake, but now i'm not so sure after they lost to McNeil tonight. We play Round Rock and I hope we come out with a fire lit under our... you know, because we certainly didn't have that in the 2nd half tonight.
Congrats to Westlake on winning ANOTHER district title :) now we've gotta go back and concentrate on playoffs because there's a whole new season to be played starting next week! GETT ITT REBBS!

Good game to Westlake. They deserve to win. Their special teams dominated Hay's. Their defense did a nice job against Hays and AW. THOUGH.....2 carries in the second half for AW???? Cmon????? Are you kidding me?? Hays coaches were too busy trying to outcoach Westlake by beating them w/ other players other than AW that they forgot they could have just 4, and 5 yard'd Westlake in the 2nd half with AW. Oh well...shoulda woulda coulda...again congrats goes to Westlake...and unlike Pflugerville fans...I will say...THEY WERE THE BETTER TEAM!!!! And that was one hell of a game!!! Good luck to Westlake in the playoffs....they are a scrappy team...and you can't ever count out a scrappy team

I wasn't referring to your fans rushing the field after the game. Westlake, like many teams we face, has a tradition of singing the school song on the field after the game, win or lose, and fans (mostly little kids at our stadium) are allowed on the field after the game.

The incident I was referring to two years ago were banners and taunting about snapping our district winning streak. And if I saw our own fans doing the same thing--hoisting a banner that read 9-1 and chanting 9-1, 9-1--I'd say the same thing about them. Fortunately, I've never seen us do anything like that, and I was very surprised when I saw that in the Hays stands after the game two years ago.

And I forgot to say--we'll be rooting for you in the playoffs all the way. Thanks for being a credit to our district on the field and better preparing both of us for the playoffs with a good, hard fought game.

LET US GET A FEW THINGS STRAIGHT!!!

1. Hays fans and their players talk trash

2. Their ignorant racist symbol, the Beauregard battle flag, (they think it is the confederate flag) is an insult to everyone

3. After talking trash the whole game their players cried after the game - boo hoo how sad - they deserved what they got.

Maybe they will learn a lesson and keep their mouth shut next game.

your points.

1. Yeah I guess you're right, Hays IS the ONLY team that has players and fans talk ****. I forgot that this was a debate tournament, not a football game.

2. The flag was taken away about 4 years ago, it's gone from our school completely as a respect to EVERYONE.

3. It was an emotional game, Westlake players were crying too.
