Catchy title!
After following the website and seeing many of the same posters talk about the greatness of Katy, SL, Lufkin, Abilene, Westlake, Westfield, Longview, Lufkin etc.

I got say their are some great fans on here. All these programs and others are having great success currently. However, who would you say is the all-time best football program in the state? I am not saying over 10 years, 15 years, 20 years. but 50+ years. A team that consistently wins year over year and can be backed up with statistics such as State championships, Playoff appearances, and all time wins?

When everyone looks at it objectively and not through their hearts. One program comes to mind. The Plano Wildcats. Yes they have had a down turn over the last 5 years or so. Bottoming at in 03 with an 0-10 season. Now they rise from the worst to potentially being the best in the biggest 2 year turn around in any classification.

Here are my facts.
9 State Championship Appearances
7 State Championships in 4 different decades.
42 Playoff Appearances. (Prior to 1982 only 1 team made the playoffs from each district)
All-time attendance record 49,905 77 state championship vs PNG.
4-0 Record vs Odessa Permian when Mojo was at their height.
More victories all-time than any school 681 except maybe Abilene.

That is why I see Plano as the Notre Dame of Texas Football.

Prove me wrong. :)

I thought Temple was #1 all time in wins. If you want to be the Notre Dame of HS football you can be I guess that makes Lufkin USC (LOL) just trippin.

Don't know much about Plano but Notre Dame hasn't been the winningest college football team through the years (Michigan?), doesn't have the most bowl appearances (Michigan?), doesn't have the highest attendence (Michigan), doesn't have the most national championships (Yale), and has never beaten Odessa Permian... So I guess you can be the Notre Dame of Texas football if you'd like, but why be so hard on your team?

Yeah, that's my log to throw in the fire. EVERYBODY knew I was going to throw that log in! :D You know all it takes is just one more title to say

7 titles
10 title games!

Plano was playing football long before Judson started. They were winning lower classifications, too.

I say Plano is 3rd at best behind Judson and Permian.

The case for SLC is that they have won more games and advanced further in the playoffs (on average) than any team in Texas over the last 20 years. Proportionally, their 5A-only record aint to shabby either.

Lonny you are wrong about the lower classification, 4 have come in the highest classification, while another has come in the second highest. To say they are behind Permian is questionable. As stated above they have played Permian 4 times and beat Permian all 4 times they played. Judson is more like Miami, in that their success has been in the last 20 years. Plano has had success for a long long time.

I know they beat Permian, but I was going with Permian's 6 titles in the highest (4A and 5A) to Plano's 4 and 3.

OK, Judson beat Plano in 1993! :p

Gordon Wood era Brownwood Teams should be considered,

Also, Refugio has a been a consistant winner in lower classifiacations, just don't have the state titles to show for it.

I am no SLC fan.

But let's face it ......

...they are the "Notre Dame" in this state presently.

Success at 2a. Success at 3a. Success at 4a. Mega-Success at 5A.

You can't deny the greatness of consistency.

Katy would be the 'OU'.
Permian would be the Yale -- lots of championships in the past, but nothing recently.

My Arl. Bowie Vols would be the Prarie View A&M :).

Plano Wildcat is making some points. I may have to rethink my Notre Dame comparrison.

Notre Dame was sleeping the last decade or so too, like Plano. And prior to that, they were kicking tail generally in previous decades.

Maybe Plano is the Notre Dame of Texas Football? Could Highland Park also account for that in 4A?

Southlake, if we compare newer college success, could be the Miami Hurricanes maybe?

Plano has never put together a run like SLC is on. It's always been more up and down for the Wildcats. But the "up" years tend to be really up and really anger our crosstown rivals at PESH. :)

As far as comparison, I always likened Plano to Nebraska in terms of style and simplicity. The Nebraska of old that is.

I disagree on the SLC run and the up and down years. Between 1982 and 1987 Plano's record is as follows

82 13-1 lost in quarters
83 14-1 lost in semi's
84 11-1 area
85 8-2
86 14-2 state champs
87 16-0 state champs, national champs

6 year total 77-7 2 state, 1 national championship

It was the Team of the Century - By the Dallas Morning News -- FYI

Team of the Century
The Greatest High School Football Team in Texas
Al Pickett
Foreword by Carlton Stowers

Fifty years ago Abilene High School, under legendary Coach Chuck
Moser, became a football dynasty in Texas.
Moser moved to Abilene in 1953 at age thirty-four. What followed
were seven of the most amazing years in the rich history of Texas
high school football. The 1954, 1955, and 1956 teams won state
championships. From 1954 to 1957 the Eagles won an incredible
forty-nine consecutive games. Abilene captured six district titles in
a row in a rugged West Texas league known as the Little Southwest
Conference. In Moser's seven years, Abilene won seventy-eight
games and lost only seven.
In its 1999 wrap-up of the twentieth century in Texas, The
Dallas Morning News designated the Eagles of 1954–57 as the
"Team of the Century" in high school football.
Veteran sports writer Al Pickett explores how Moser worked his
magic to galvanize an entire community in support of his program
and turn an otherwise ordinary group of high school kids into the
best football team in Texas history.

Team of the decade sure. They had a pretty good run in the 50's. What were they doing in the 60's, 70's and 80's and 90's? I believe 57 was their last state champion. correct? Also do think a with all things being equal that the best team of the 50's from Abilene could beat some of the teams today? Not a chance. Line up that team against any of the last 10 5A state champs and they would get destroyed.

For that 7 year stretch they were the best team in Texas. My orginal comments were who was the best over 50 years not a decade. I don't think it matches what Plano has done. :)

Plano Wildcat Fan -- Abilene has a total of 6 state championships. The last of which was in 1957. When I posted the Team of the Century info, it was to correct the Team of the Decade error that had been made in previous posts. The Dallas Morning News looked at the last 100 years of HS football and selected The Abilene High Eagles based on what they had accomplished prior to 1957. Now that we are in a new millenia, I look forward to the resurgance of the AHS football program and a possible playoff game with Plano this year. :D :D

That's OK. It's good to mix things up a little bit. Makes things more interesting on the board and stirs peoples passions a little. IT's all GOOD!!

I still stand by my Notre Dame of Texas Football. The best stretch of football over the last 50 years from 2A to 5A. NO one can say they have accomplished what Plano has accomplished at al levels of Texas Football.

4a from the 70s is the 5a of the present. UIL decided to bump everyone up a class because the small schools didn't like being called class B. So those titles were basically the same class.

I respect Plano and their tradition as much as anyone. But to come on here and start a thread like this, then start to bash other teams is wrong. You my friend are what I would call a fair weather fan. You have been no where the last few years, then all the sudden Plano has a great year and you claim them to be king of the world.
Most Plano fans I have encountered this year, are just happy to see them winning, they realize it will be a tough road ahead and have taken nothing for granted this year.
If you get sick of threads about SLC, Lufkin and Katy, then by all means start your own, but on this site get used to it. Those three programs have been the most successfull programs in the state over the last 5 years, rather you like it or not, its the cold hard truth. As long as they are successfull then we will continue to talk about them and their winning ways. Plano will get their respect, but it has to be earned, not given. You make some noise in the playoffs, which i think you will, then people will give you respect. Till then stop giving your fine school and its supporters a arrogant reputation.

for the Permian vs Plano is that the scores? 3-0, 6-3, 29-21, 10-0?

And as for your comments about Judson:
Judson has been in one of the toughest districts in the state for years.
You say Judson's success started in '82, when 2 teams go. Well, Check These Stats:

Judson has been the district champions 15 times since '82
In 1983, 1992, 1992, and 1993 Judson WON DISTRICT THEN WON STATE.
In 1988 Judson won district and lost state but holds title.
In 1995 Judson came 2nd in district(1st=SA Roosevelt, Div II state champs)and won DI title
In 1990, 1996, and 1998 Judson won district and lost state.

So out of 9 state title appearances, Judson was the district champion 8 times.

Plano matches up with Notre Dame very well, I agree. Your point about Judson only getting good when the let 2 teams in the playoffs is rediculous because in 8 out of their 9 title appearances they were district champions. Yes Judson started getting good at that time, but NOT BECAUSE OF the 2 teams going.

Maroon Cathead

It’s difficult to gauge the true strength of teams since the playoff divisional split in 1990.

D.W. Rutledge was a terrific head coach that took over the helm of Converse Judson in 1984. Yet, Coach Rutledge and Converse Judson didn’t start winning state championships during his coaching tenure until after 1989.

Bob Ledbetter was a terrific head coach. Even now, he is a driving force behind Southlake Carroll’s success. Yet, during his head coaching career at Southlake Carroll (1979-1995), it took until after 1989 for him to capture two of his three state titles.

Wish Odessa Permian had a coach that did things in the tradition of Coach Wilkins and Coach Gaines. For 5A presently, more fittingly than the Plano Senior High School Wildcats, the Odessa Permian Panthers (Mojo) deserve to be recognized as the Notre Dame of Texas High School football.

Here is another fact.

Plano won a State Title in each classification 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A...Only Texas team ever to do that!

I also think won state at least once in each decade, except in current won 2 in 60's 70's and 80's one in the 90's and won back to back State titles twice, in 70's and 80's

I am a bit biased but Plano arguably has the best Football tradition in the State. You have to combine the success of Judson and Permian to match the success Plano has had.

Hopefully this year will make 8.

Maroon Cathead

Respectfully disagree on a couple of points. It is a tough call to determine the best high school football tradition in the state. Converse Judson has a strong tradition, and in my estimation, Odessa Permian has a tradition that currently surpasses Plano’s. Plano capturing the 5A DII state title this year will tilt the balance toward Plano.

Further, Plano Senior High School did not win back to back titles in 4A in the 1970’s. In 1977, Plano defeated Port Neches-Groves High School to win its fourth state championship. The following year, in 1978, Plano fell to Houston Stratford in the 4A state championship.

The other Plano state championship in the 1970's was Plano High School's victory over Gregory-Portland in the 1971 3A state championship.

I respectfully concede my error the back to back was in the 80's only.

I can see the argument of who has the best tradiditon in State Championships as yes there are others with more 5A titles, but in my opinion it does not matter what A it is 2, 3, 4 or 5, as winning a state championship at any level in Texas is a tough feat to do. Look a the number of teams in the state and look at the percentages that have not won one or even been at all.

Sure all of Plano's titles were not 5A, but the odds of a program winning at least one title in every UIL catagory, except 6-man, is impressive in itself and its more than likely to stand for some time to come.

But as I noted in another thread, all the titles Plano has won, and the same for SLC, Lufkin or any other program for that matter is out the window, doesn't matter.

What's importiant for Plano now is 2005 D2 Playoffs, it won't be easy and we are going to take it one week at a time!!!!!!!

plano's state titles were in the 3 largest classifications only. the 2a titles would now be 3a, so they really have only won titles in 3,4,and 5a. impressive enough in my books, that embellishment isn't necessary. i am somewhat surprised the plano faithful have escaped being visited by the over-hype troll. maybe it's just a slc thang.

Not that I have any particular affiliation or disliking of any of the schools being discussed (in all honesty how can someone not be impressed by the accomplishments of Plano) but it really seems pointless to attempt to compare dynasties/traditions/histories of various teams with the intent of actually making an irrefutable case. Yes, Plano has won a lot of games (but Amarillo has actually won more - with Temple and Highland Park within one seasons reach of catching them), and they've won a lot of state titles (but Brownwood has won just as many).

If you're going to make the case that you can't compare the Judson's, Carroll's and Permian's to Plano because of the plain fact that they haven't been around for even half the amount of time Plano has, then it has to go both ways. Some of these teams have done things in their relatively brief existences that Plano hasn't done with a 60+ year head start.

For instance, I've got season records for Plano going back to 1904 and that doesn't mean it was the first year they started playing. At minimum they've played for over 100 years. SLC's had a varsity UIL team for just over 40 years and they've done quite a bit in those 40+ years.

They may have over a century of 'tradition' but Plano didn't really put itself on the football map until 1965, which was over 60 years into it's existence (so they are very UNLIKE Notre Dame in that extent). Prior to 1965 Plano had won a grand total of 5 playoff games, a number which they exactly doubled in the 1965 Playoffs when they won their first title. In the decade of the 50's they only had a 44.5% winning percentage.

So when you compare the following achievements, realizing that Plano had over 100 years to pull it off and SLC only 42, what does that really say?

Most consecutive years making the playoffs: SLC-10 ('86-'95) Plano-7 ('90-'96)

Regional Championships (aka State Semifinal Appearances): SLC-11 Plano-11

Undefeated regular seasons: SLC-12 ('87,'88,'89,'90,'91,'92,'93,'95,'02,'03,'04,'05) Plano-10 ('25,'30,'61,'74,'75,'82,'83,'84,'87,'05)

Seasons scoring more than 500 points: SLC - 10 (oops! 11 - they hit 502 last night), Plano - 0

Total number of 13 win seasons: SLC 9 , Plano 8
14 win seasons: SLC 9, Plano 5
16 win seasons: SLC 5, Plano 1

Longest winning streak: SLC 33 games ('92-'94), 47 games without a loss ('91-'94)
Plano 29 ('86-'88)

Individual AP Polls ranked #1: SLC-56 ('89,'92,'93,'04,'05)
and believe it or not: Plano-9 ('87)

That is the best you can do... WOS87 I think put all the Plano talk in the approriate place as far I can see. One thing WOS87 left off was the 72 game regular season winning streak (which at the time was the best nationally.)

I think it is premature for the Plano poster who started this thread to open this topic.... Plano had 5 losing seasons out of the last 10. It was quite an accomplishment to turn the 0fer around, but there is still a long way to go.

I disagree on the SLC run and the up and down years. Between 1982 and 1987 Plano's record is as follows

82 13-1 lost in quarters
83 14-1 lost in semi's
84 11-1 area
85 8-2
86 14-2 state champs
87 16-0 state champs, national champs

6 year total 77-7 2 state, 1 national championship

Not to quarrel but who was ranking high schools nationally in the early and mid 80's? The ones today are totally mythical as far as I am concerned and they would have been even less than that if they existed 20-25 years ago.

They have a lot of history, I guess it is hard to compare teams over the years because of the number and quality of teams in the conference, for example we have more teams in our largest conference than 30-40-50 years ago and plus the quality of your opponents for example 26-5A has been historically a competitive district. There are too many variables.

I posted this thread for great feedback from everyone. Notre Dame Comparison is valid. A Football program with a storied history with as much or more tradition than any team in Texas that has been down the last 5 years just like Notre Dame. That is why I compared them to Notre Dame.

Also wanted to stir the hornets nest and get something started other than another SL lake thread about their 8th Grade A team's season or what Todd Dodge had for Breakfast the day of the Ryan Game.

does missing a 2nd year starting cb and leading rb and lights out kicker count? when you are playing a pure passing team with the leading passer in the metromess(at the time) cb play is fairly important. the spread also depends on a rb almost as much as a qb. hey, people are just rewriting the crap you wrote last week and substituting plano for slc. a win is a win and from now on that is all that matters. showed more what the cats are made of, and prepared them better for the next tight game, imo.

Yes but idiots deserve what they get. Some words were harsh ,but I was caught up in the passion of it.

Since you do not know me, I was born in Plano, Graduated Plano, and I have seen every Plano state championship game, my blood is deep maroon. I am an old timer that helped build the tradition you speak about. How you and Wildcat05 think i am from SLC i have no idea (no offense to slc people).

The team is good this year. They looked bad against Marcus, East, and FM. I was at the FM game and in pregame they were missing field goals against the wind. so in the game they tried one from 30 and missed, and that wasn't good enough, he tried one from 35 or so and missed it. then comes the kick-off when all Plano stould and watched the ball while FM recovered. There were plenty more.
IMO- none of the last 3 games should have been as close as they were.

I will say it again, If they play like the last 3 games in the playoffs, they will be in trouble. Marcus, East, FM are not as good SGP, SLC, or Abilene.
