Did anybody see that TitleTown thing on ESPN yesterday? Massilon, OH is the mecca of college football in the US. 22 State Championships, 77% winning percentage out of 1046 games played, 23 NFL players, 3 NFL coaches, 14 collegiate All-Americans....talk about a prestigous dynasty.

I am a Texas product and will always believe in my heart that Texas HS Football is the best, but they play a pretty good brand of football here in Mississippi. South Panola HS in Batesville has a very impressive run going, even when you consider Mississippi is a much smaller state than Texas, California or Florida. They have a 75 game win streak and have won the 6-A State Title 5 years in a row. They have had some close games, but always manage to win. I can easily see them stretching their win streak to 90 this year. I would like to see someone else break through this year, but South Panola has some awesome athletes.

I notice that top Texas teams are at 1, 10 and 24 on this list (Trinity, Plano, SLC). South Panola is 11 on this list.

It's hard to compare state to state, but 75 in a row is pretty impressive anywhere.

All I can say is that they don't play football in Texas. The quality of football in Texas speaks for itself.

I agree...South Panola reminds me alot of Bastrop over here....They got Bastrop #7 in this poll.....South Panola always seems to have a ton of talent like Bastrop..

So far Bastrop has had a kid commit to LSU, one just committed to Michigan and of course alot of people waiting to see where Rueben Randle ***** ends up-hopefully here....Bastrop got 3 other kids who will play D-1 ball also...Suppose to have a heck of a junior class as well, I dunno...

Anyways, isn't South Panola suppose to play a 6A school from Florida this year on ESPN?....Think I heard that....That game if it happens will be huge for SP....

Good luck....

As a Massillon Born (I was given one of the footballs at birth that you saw on the interview, Its around here somewhere) I have to say that Massillon locals deffinatly are more passionate than any fans I have encountered in Texas. There are 85+ year old women going to every game and still cheering on their Tigers! And I don't know of any other school playing their rivals every year since 1894. I agree there is nothing better than Texas High School Football, But Massillon is a very close 2nd place.

Im not trying to take anything away from Massillon but my 85 yr old Grandmother makes as many games as she is able (fell and hurt her hip 2 yrs ago so she cant make everyone anymore). My family has had season tickets for over 20 years. East texas is extremely passionate about its high school football.

I think what sets Texas apart from Ohio for example, is the huge number of high schools playing football. Not only the huge number of schools playing, but the quality of the programs. In a small competition base it is easy to have one dominant team. But in Texas 5A there are over 200 schools and we know of the many powerhouses who are in contention year after year.

Southlake Carroll is as close to a dominant team Texas has seen. But if you look over recent years; Katy, Judson, Plano, Permian, Lufkin, North Shore, Westfield, Trinity, etc have emerged as dominant programs. (I apologize for any omissions from this list), who within a small competitor base would be a single dominant team.

All of them, I think...:eek:Having spent 20 yrs ('73-'93) in NE Ohio, I'm pretty familiar with Massillon football and believe you are correct. They have not won a state title via playoff. Massillon's last state title was in the 1970's via poll.

The last state championship apperance was in 05 against St.Xavier, unfortunatly this is when St.Xavier established themselves as a powerhouse.

This is really interesting, but Ohio in size is kind of like East Texas, which while loaded with talented progams, leaves out the other 3/4 of Texas....So Massilon has a great tradition for Ohio, but would be pretty diluted here in Texas, California or Florida...IMO

That'll win you support on this board.

I'm sure Massillon fans are great, but how many of their competitiors equal their passion and support? We have great programs all over the state that rival massillon with their passion and fandom. How far does massillon have to travel in that tiny state? We have programs that consistently bring 4-5k fans on road games that are 100+ miles away. I don't think you want to start this discussion like that, or you had better grab a helmet.

I really can't explain it, its just something you have to experiance. And Massillon travels really well, probably the best I have seen in the state. If they were in Texas they would probably be ranked up there with Permian in the fan following and tradition

I did see on their web site that they made it to the 5th round in '05 before losing, but couldn't tell if that was the finals or semi's.

Massillon had an unquestioned string of success in the period of the 30's to the early '70's, however, once Ohio started having playoffs, Massillon has not been able to repeat their earlier successes. They have been overshadowed by the private parochial schools like, St. X, Moeller, Elder & St. Ed's etc. who for the most part have dominated Ohio HS football. Occasionally a public school will break through, but usually they will fade back in the pack in a few years.

I have made the point on this board several times that you just need to look at Ohio if you want to see what will happen when you allow widespread public and private school competition in the playoffs. Massillon is a great example of how public schools even with the best traditions and fan/parent support fall short trying to compete with schools that have no restrictions on where they can draw kids from.

Hmmm, saw this on Wikianswers, so take it for what it's worth. I thought it was interesting, though.

"California, Texas, and Florida far and away produce the most NFL football players. California is always between 180 and 205 players in the NFL. Texas and Florida are both usually between 165 and 185. the next closest state to these three is normally somwhere around 80 players. A freakish statistic however, is that Florida has less than half the number of high school football players as California and approx. half the number of players as Texas. Per capita, Florida produces twice as many NFL players than even the next closest state."

Do you think it's true that Florida produces TWICE AS MANY! NFL players per capita than the next closest state?

I don't think about it. High School State Championships are highschool. Permian one of the "used to be" power houses in Texas rarely put kids into D-1 Universitys much less on NFL teams.

Apopka.

I haven't heard about ESPN though.

From my travels....Might happen-be a good one to see...

This who they play this year:
Apopka (Fla.) and South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) on Sept. 19 at South Panola. Apopka finished 12-2 last season and made it to the state 6A semifinals, losing 21-18 to Boone (Orlando). The Blue Darters have eight offensive and seven defensive starters returning. South Panola has won 75 games in a row and five consecutive state 5A titles. ESPN spokesman Tilea Coleman said the game is one the network is considering for its high school football schedule, possibly on ESPN2.

Canes......I don't know much about the private schools in FL, but, I am curious, how many private schools play in FL highest classifications?? Is it like Ohio where there are a large number that compete in the highest classification and get lots of statewide publicity.

Regarding Massillon......You are correct that the big private schools are mostly around Cleveland and Cincinnati, however, over the last 30+ years when Massillon has made a PO run it was almost always a big priviate school that knocked them out. Bottomline, Massillon has not won a state championship since they started PO's in Ohio in the mid 70's. During those same years it has been mostly the big private schools that have hoisted state championship trophies in Ohio's highest classification. It makes you wonder how many more championships Massillon might have won had they been competing against only public schools.
