SLCdad,
Help me understand. Who votes? How many votes are there? What is the "points based on" stat?

Is this pole the most recognized? I saw the Harris people all over the place last year at Baylor. Are they A.P. people?

Associated Press is the one printed in most newspapers. I believe it consists of twenty sportswriters (don't know which ones) who put in their top 10's.

Harris is unrelated (I think).

20 people in the media in Texas are appointed based upon area population to vote for the Top 10. The maximum points is 200 if all 20 voters vote you 1st place. That's what SLC got this week. All total, 1100 points are divvied up in each classification. The AP poll heavily depends on teams being undefeated and doesn't reward strong schedules.

The Harris Poll is a power poll that sets point spreads. It's well recognized and has it's competitors such as Texas Football Ratings, the Padilla Poll, and the Collier-Sharp Poll in the past. We also have the top 25 on here and the Alan Outlook for polls.

Is this pole the most recognized? I saw the Harris people all over the place last year at Baylor. Are they A.P. people? This is the Associated Press poll. There are 20 sportswriters from Texas who participate in the poll. Points are awarded 10 for a 1st place vote, 9 for 2nd, 8 for 3rd, etc. Most major newspapers publish the poll and they often publish how their writer/voter voted.

From the Dallas Morning News: How SportsDay's Tim MacMahon voted: 1. Southlake Carroll, 2. Longview, 3. Spring Westfield, 4. Lufkin, 5. Katy, 6. Abilene, 7. Copperas Cove, 8. Carter, 9. Schertz Clemens, 10. Plano.

From the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram: Staff Writer Eric Zarate's votes: 5A -- 1, Carroll; 2, Spring Westfield; 3, Longview; 4, Lufkin; 5, Katy; 6, Abilene; 7, Copperas Cove; 8, Dallas Carter; 9, Schertz Clemens; 10, Irving MacArthur.

The good thing in contrast to college football is that when it comes down to the polls do not matter it is up to the team to win the games. I am getting excited about the playoffs. I love the playoffs.

I personally still feel ET is a top ten team. Every team has an off night and lucky for ET it came at a non crucial time for them. If SLC and ET do play that first round, SLC will not have an easy time of it. Not knocking the Dragons but they had their hands full against a team I don't feel is near as strong as SGP.

the way slc played vs gvine they would have lost to almost any top 25 team. does that mean the previous 8 were smoke and mirrors? et lost the first time they were tested. do either of these events signal a trend? personally, i'd say that taking the season as a whole is more important than evaluating the whole hiway as crap right after you hit the only pothole for 55 miles. these games may give the pursuers some fleeting and diaphanous confidence, but this too shall pass.

No mystery--a couple of the American Statesman sports writers who would love for Hays to beat Westlake (a couple of them have demonstrated in their work that they really dislike us for whatever reason) are the two Hays votes unless I miss my guess. And no fuel--Hays seems to be taking this game as some big grudge match. Sure, we'd love to beat them and win district, and we respect that they are a talented and well-coached team. But it's kind of like when we play Austin High (although AHS hasn't even been competitive in our games until this year)--they take it far more personally than we do.

That's right. Polls are out the window once the play-offs start.

Bring on the play-offs.

If only we could have a D1-D2 grand finale'.

My feeling is that all poll writers are a bunch of fat-a$$ bums that know nothing about the high school football picture, the players, and the whole picture. How can any, and I mean any, team drop completely out after one loss when they have, and still are up in the front of the powere rankings. They think all they have to do to get paid is do their internet vote, and sit back for the results. Ask them a question about these kids, their stats, theirs abilities, or anyhting about the game and they will give you a dumb, blank stare. These polls hold absolutely no credence at all. The players are the ones who make the games what they are; not a bunch of pencil pushin idiots.

Now were getting to where SV is every year,#15-20.How many really believe, that thats where SV will finish. That is no better than some BCS rating,i mean who`s undefeated poll.I`m not sure if #9 Schertz Clemens could even beat current #3 (Reagan Rattlers) in 26 5A.They never take into consideration, that a team is comming together just at the right time,"the Playoffs".But,whatever sells newspapers,Money is still king,at least in the world system.....

You may not be sure, but we are! You like to talk smack about Clemens any chance you get! Here's some smack for you. SV only beat Madison by 10 and SM has beaten them, so my advice is to win this week and then worry about SM the next week in round 1! Keep talking and keep winning and we'll see you in the regional championship game if you can get by San Marcos in round 1. That is if we can beat your #2 team (Madison) in round 1! Somehow I think we will get that done. Good luck and I hope your run defense is as good as you think it is because SM can flat out get it done on the ground!

It's been said over and over again. Don't let the polls get to you. They are for entertainment purposes only and half the times they are wrong and the other half is lucky guesses. It is impossible to have an accurate top ten and some of us get upset because one team is 1 and another is 2. How can you know for sure? We won't until it's all said and done. There are 100's of teams in 5A and some people will try to put them all in order and only one will come out on top. I've been delivered from my poll anger sessions.
