So, I have a major in mind and It's something I've wanted to do my whole life. The problem is, not many colleges offer it. The major is Aviation (leading to commerical pilot as a career). If anyone can help or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it!

So far I have a list of 2......

Ohio State
Air Force Academy

I would like to have a few more options and hopfully some choices in the Southwest U.S

Feel free to PM me or leave info here

UCLA
Penn State
US Naval Academy
Texas A&M

My great-Grandfather was a graduate of the US Naval Academy and later received his degree in aeronautical engineering (I think) from A&M. He was a pilot for American Airlines for decades and later taught at their flight school before retiring a millionaire.

Okie State and Auburn - but the best is a military background, preferably Naval.

Just what are you wanting to major in? Aviation is a pretty broad category and I don't know I have ever seen such a major offered. Aerospace engineering, yes, but this one is a real challenge, to say the least. Aerospace education, yes, but that is part of an education program. If what you are seeking is flight training, then any of the universities offering Air Force ROTC can afford you that opportunity (more so than other ROTC choices.) But you can also make yourself eligible for flight training by joining the Civil Air Patrol with no formal military commitment. So again, what aspect of aviation are you interested in pursuing in college?

There is a school in Tulsa that specializes in an Aviation degree. I think it's called the Spartan School of Aeronautics.

I was looking for something in Flight Operations. I found a program at Bowling Green State in Ohio. I really want to avoid the Armed Forces if possible, I just don't think it is for me.

The Civil Air Patrol is a civilian auxillary of the Air Force. While it is technically civilian, it is organized upon military lines and operated accordingly. I was an active meber for many years, as was my father. A good deal of the effort can be search and rescue operations and that is the part I was involved with both on the ground and in the air. My father operated more in the educational outreaches and attained the rank of Lt. Col. I was never that serious about it as he was. But it is a very worthwhile endeavor. To learn more:

My brother in law went to the Air Force Academy and is very proud to have gone there, but he has said several times that he wishes that he would have gone to a regular school. Lots of politics/etc. that is certainly not for everyone.

To be clear he graduated in '91 and is still in(F16 pilot), so likes the AF, but if you are aprehensive about the military life, I would consider that hard.

Do you think I should go talk to a recruiter about the academy? My parents keep telling me I need to go and just get more info. Prob wouldn't hurt anything.....

I toured the AFA campus when I was 15 and spoke with a couple of Officers about life in the academy and what to expect. I suggest checking it out...I didn't end up going to the AFA but I can assure you it is an educational experience you won't find outside of the service academies. Of course, if you are not interested in pledging 8 years (at least 5 active) of your life to the military then it isn't for you, but I strongly suggest visiting if you really want to be a pilot.

Also, I don't know how much an Air Force recruiter would be able to tell you about the Academy...he'll just want you to enlist. I suggest you contact them directly in Colorado Springs and ask to have someone contact you about visits and admissions.

If you want to know more feel free to PM me, I'll do what I can to help.

FWIW .... A H.S. Buddy of mine worked in the Aerospace industry and was in Wichita, KS. For some reason this is sometimes referred to as the 'Air Capital of the World' (not sure how they got this designation or legit the claim is) ... however he did say there were quite a few aerospace companies located there. I know Wichita State has a program .... if Kansas is your cup of tea! I know they have pretty decent Men's Basketball and Baseball teams ... not sure about the band though.

lol I know, I was thinking about that last night as I was typing "Auburn". I don't know If I can bring myself to ever saying "War Eagle".

I'll prob take a campus tour and catch a football game, their band has a thing for High School Seniors/Juniors and let them march pre-game and play in the stands with them. I might check that out and take advantage of the free ticket:D
