i heard that lufkin was movin away from the spread a bit and going to a more traditional offensive set. Is there a problem wit the athletes or does outlaw want to pound his way to houston

Lufkin having problem with athletes? I don't think so. Some years you get a group of kids that work better under a different system or an adjusted one to better suite their strengths. it not a lack of talent, its called good coaching. If you ran the same offensive scheme, and same packages every year and never adjusted to your players abilities...you'd lose. Their are schools out there that are really good at it.

I think there were some inconsistencies throughout the season that had them questioning the spread. Obviously, the spread is an excellent offensive scheme that is used with great success by numerous HS's all over the country, but can create some deficiencies in certain fundamental elements of the game.
Examples: An untimely poor shotgun snap can result in a huge loss of yardage. Being able to control the clock & the ability to consistantly control field position are difficult at times. The offense can become very limited in blocking schemes because of the lack of a TE or FB. OC must be comfortable throwing the ball in situations where running would be more practical. And it places a lot of pressure on your own defense if there are multiple 3 and outs, or no change in field position.
I know that Lufkin had around 12 yards of offense at the half against Klein Forest in last years 1st round playoff game. And although they managed to tie the game late with a long TD pass, it was also a INT returned 99 yards for the winning score that cost them the game.
Lufkin always has excellent talent. Fact is they will be successful no matter what offensive or defensive system they run. Perhaps changing the offense to a more traditional running style attack is a matter of having to take fewer chances to attain that success. Take a look at the 4 teams that played for 5A state titles this past season. All four, ET, Judson, Katy, & Pfugerville are power, ball control offenses that play stellar defense. Pretty good formula.
Just my thoughts...

Lufkin posters have said any change will be minimal as far as the scheme goes. I think one of Lufkin's problems is, aside from Jorvorskie Lane, I can't remember another running back they've had who could give them 20+ quality carries a week. They generally don't use the quarterback as a runner either. With no consistent running threat, defenses can drop into coverage without giving up much ground up front.

I've never thought about that, but wow.... it's true. How odd that a school who can pump out great athletes at QB, WR, LB, and DB with pretty decent consistency hasn't had that kind of guy at RB in a while?

This has really been the thorn in the side - lack of consistent ground game. Could prove to be an issue again this year, although I know for a fact the qb will be running more.
After three years of very successful qb as second running back option we got away from that two years ago for two reasons:
1) Our qb - Jeremy Claybon - had a pin in his forearm
2) Dez Bryant
This year we will have a few minor changes as D' Lee will be more of an H-back and we will lose the 4th receiver in a lot of sets. D has off-the-charts ability - and he will likely be more of blocking receiver, however, I think he could very well be our go to receiver as well.
Lufkin has been running very thin on the offensive line for five years now. Last year's group was supposed to be d-1 heavy, and it really wasn't. I think we recommit to that group in the next few years and return to a more balanced attack.
I also really expect Claybon to be alot more mobile this year. He wasnt a great scrambler but he got the job done more than a couple of times last year.
I think outlaw just feels the lack of a super offensive weapon like dez after last year and wants to try something a little more conservative with this team.

IMO the offensive change(s) better match the talent Lufkin will have for the next couple of years.
LP ran a similar offense back in 2001 with Reggie McNeal throwing to a gifted TE/QB by the name of T. Parks. Allows the Qb to more mobile and more short range options. Don't have "Dez" to execute the juts drop back and chunk play;) Also I like the ability for the QB to go under center in the red zone.
Lufkin isn't short on talent....just a great coaching move to better align talent.

You'll never hear me say "go under center" again after the SLC debacle last year against Abilene High - guaranteed.
