5A Texas Football.com's Week 10 Top 25 (http://www.5atexasfootball.com/5astaterankings.htm)

This week, you will notice quite a few changes. The Euless Trinity loss to SGP on the heels of SGP's shocking 3-0 loss to IMac really opened things up. There was no other fair way to rank those teams other than to have them in succession. Thus, it was hard to rank them any higher than they are because of what the teams now in front of them have accomplished. If we moved IMac up any higher, we feel it would be a stretch. Who could you drop below IMac? The top 12 deserve to be ahead of the 6-5A trio with the way things have played out. This is one of those cases where Trinity and SGP are probably better than their ranking, but we really feel strongly about not ranking a team higher than another team that just beat them if their records are the same.

The great thing is, in a few weeks our rankings won't mean crap. We like to try to give an idea of the best teams heading into the postseason, but beyond that, they don't mean too much. They're fun to do and interesting to talk about, though.

We'll post the final 2005 Top 25 after the completion of this week's games. We'll then let the post season determine the contenders from the pretenders.

I honestly have not looked at the top 25 in over 6 weeks. I would have Plano at 7 and Abilene High at 9 - but that's just me. AHS is essentially cake-walking through district right now.

Spring Westfield plays this coming Friday! They play Humble for the district title @ Humble, 7:30pm. You have them not playing until the playoffs!

Okay, so let me get this straight--was Euless Trinity's loss more impressive than our twenty point win because you don't really follow Central Texas football? I guess that must be why we were leapfrogged by metroplex teams that will not go very far in the playoffs--but maybe that's their consolation prize! It's surely not any computerized power rating system, that's for sure!!

a team shouldn't be penalized because they play in a stronger district. did abilene get down graded for having to play slc earlier than lp? and because one team gets tio play several cream puffs in the first rounds, do they automatically become a better team? with the possibility of an early matchup with trinity v slc, would the other be the less for losing? sometimes the luck of the draw is more important than skill in making it deep. that being said, the chaps certainly have the pedigree to be highly regarded anyway.

chapfan, I'm not sure I'm following you. Is this the first week you've looked at the rankings? Trinity being slightly higher than Westlake at this point is not that much of a stretch and it certainly isn't based on just the last game. Westlake has had a very good year and has played very well since the opening loss to Leander. Are Copperas Cove, Leander, and Pflugerville not Central Texas teams? We've had them ranked all season, so it's pretty safe to say we've been paying attention. Your win over Crockett, who has one of the best passing offenses in the state, was good, but they were a 4-4 team that allowed more points than 227 out of 244 teams in the state. The only teams that jumped you guys were SGP, IMac, and TJT. SGP and IMac moved up because SGP's win over Trinity validated IMac as explained above. The Chaps and TJT are just about equal, which is why they are ranked right next to each other. We gave the slight nod to TJT based on their defense and the fact that their competition was better than what Westlake has faced this season. They could just as easily be flip-flopped, because 1 spot out of 244 is really not much at all.

You've got North Crowley ahead of Midland in the <a href="http://www.5atexasfootball.com/05region1standings.htm">Region I</a> standing but Midland over North Crowley in the <a href="http://www.5atexasfootball.com/5astaterankings.htm>state rankings</a>. Which is it?

If you'll notice, those Regional Rankings have not been updated for this week yet...they do say Week 9. I forgot that I hadn't updated those yet...thanks for pointing that out. We gave Midland the nod after taking care of business against a much improved Midland Lee squad. If North Crowley can knock off Summit, they'll certainly be in the Top 25.

KT, did you notice on the top 25, you have every body playing on Friday. On the schedules for 205a I think the make up games are different from your schedules also.

Oh, I don't doubt that some of the dates might be off. I got those schedules directly from the THSCA back in June or July. According to the info I have, everyone is playing on Friday. The 20-5A make-up games are not reflected in the schedules we have.

Okay, I have waited a little while to respond, because quite frankly I don't agree with the logic that if three teams in a district narrowly defeat each other, that somehow "validates" those with weaker records and you bunch them up in the standings. And no other poll I follow did that. Certainly I didn't see Oklahoma State jump into the rankings because of their good first half agains Texas. Nor, conversely, was Texas punished in the polls for that game.

Could we not just as persuasively argue that Westlake beat undefeated Hays by one point, and Bastrop was defeated by Hays only after a triple overtime. Therefore, the three of us should be bunched and take the spots formerly held by Leander and Pflugerville, both of whom lost to good in-district rivals with less than stellar records? Perhaps, but Leander, with one loss, still deserves to be ranked. Pflugerville, with three losses, albeit to good teams, probably shouldn't, even though it may be as good or better as other ranked teams. Bastrop is a good, hard-playing team, but they probably have yet to succeed, as opposed to coming close, to doing something that would merit a ranking. Hays, with only one narrow loss to a top team, should also be ranked.

Again, polls are really meaningless as we enter this second season. But I believe wins and losses and caliber of competition are important. I just think sometimes the rankers are unduly impressed by the teams they have the opportunity to personally see play, and unduly unimpressed by teams whom they never see play, and that subjectivity is more apparant to those of us who have the opposite perspective (we've never seen the favored teams play, but we've seen the teams that seem to be out of favor play).

We'll take our kudos and lumps on the field.

i agree because hays has got no respect and neither has westlake
i believe hays should be about 20 and westlake about 11-15
and pflugerville should not be ranked because they are 6-,and leander got blanked by a 500 team

That is one of the 5 best posts I've ever seen from somebody with less than 10 posts! :D I used to bust the admins chops about rankings, but what they do takes a lot of work. I have to spend a lot of time doing some of my posts, but they really blow me out of the water with the preparation they put in.

Okay--you did it again. Fortunately, we'll probably be able to scratch 2 of those 3 from your "super district" (with Euless Trinity, Irving MacArthur, and South Grand Prairie) off the brackets after this weekend's games. We'll see if they can play up to your expectations.
