View Full Version : A Change in the Little SWC??

The UIL most likely wants districts to have 8 teams, but probably can only group in 7 for the Little SWC. Since Amarillo Palo Duro has beem reported to have an estimated enrollment well over 2,000, they will most likely move into the 5A ranks. District 2-5A will have 6 teams (maybe 7 if Plainview High continues their steady growth) and 3-5A will have the traditional little SWC back with San Angelo Central. The key is if only the cutoff for 5A stays near the same. However, if the cutoff for 5A goes up to maybe 2,200 or 2,300 (depends on how the UIL feels that day), then most likely Midland-Odessa schools will merge with the Lubbock-Amarillo schools. Abilene and San Angelo could be placed with teams near or within the Fort Worth area. After the February realigment, I'm certain the Little SWC will not look the same like it is this year. How much different?
Anyone else in 3-5A hearing anything different about the likely changes of the Little SWC?

Yes, in 2002, Amarillo Palo Duro was well below 2,000 with an enrollment of 1,836 in 2002. However, in an article in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported Amarillo Palo Duro's enrollment this year is over 2,000. Here is a brief snippet of the A-J article...
"There already has been buzz about who which schools might move up or move down just how districts will be affected by the new rule of allowing four teams from each 5A district to qualify for the playoffs.
One rumor circulating will directly affect the LISD schools in particular. Palo Duro, a 4A school, has reportedly turned in an enrollment of well over 2,000 students, which by the past realignment standards would have placed it squarely in the 5A ranks. If that holds, 2-5A would be a minimum of seven schools, with Amarillo reporting the lowest enrollment of the current teams at 2,058.
But how that affects the speculated plans of combining 2-5A with the Midland and Odessa schools remains to be seen. Only one of those schools, Midland at 2,816, is below 3,000." (29 Sept 2005).

They could actually. If the cutoff for 5-A is over 2,100 or 2,200 students both Amarillo Tascosa and Amarillo High could drop to 4-A (maybe even Palo Duro if their enrollment does not reach 2,200). If one school in Amarillo stays in the 5A ranks, then it creates a scenario where the UIL would place 8 teams in one district comprising of Midland, Odessa, Lubbock and Amarillo. Understandably, travel would be a big concern for these schools. That's one of the reasons why Abilene schools and SA Central would be placed in a district where FW area schools reside. The travel would actually be a shorter distance for the Eagles, Cougars, and Bobcats. Honestly, I'm not sure what goes through the minds of the UIL for realignment, but I know change is coming. I just don't know how different the Little SWC will be.

Enrollment day has passed and official enrollment has been turned into the UIL. Looks like the Lubbock Avalanche Journal overestimated Amarillo Palo Duro. In today's edition of the A-J, Amarillo Palo Duro now has an enrollment of 1,952. I think they got confused with Amarillo Tascosa which now has 2,223. Amarillo High stands at 2,060. If the cutoff remains the same for 5A football (1,925), then Palo Duro will be in 5A and San Angelo Central will most likely move back to the Little SWC. All depends on the cutoff line, however.
Where's a crystal ball when I need one?
