with the recent success of the UIL band thread, i have created this thread, which music that your highschool band plays gets you pumped??? for me playing eye of the tiger gets me pumped! also so does Land of 1000 Dances, we play those early in the game, we play eye of the tiger late in the game, if its close. also Dr. Who (the hey song), that gets me somewhat pumped, and of course the fight song

hahah...yea, I am way to "competitve" for my own good. I hate having to play with people with lesser playing abilities. I feel dragged down by it. Our drumline is a very good example :( but anyways.....eye of the tiger is a great song. I also love to play Iron Man (gotta love alil Ozzie), Land of 1000 Dances ofcourse and Louie Louie.

Lewisville plays a version of the oldie "Big John" i love it when the band strikes up that tune. Our fightsong is pretty original, i dont know of any college that has it.
As a fan, any time a band strikes up March Grandioso it gives me goose bumps. The three best bands that play that song are Permian, Plano and Allen.

I joke that there are really only 4 fight songs and 5 school songs in all of the Texas High schools! I was amazed when I first heard the school song of SLC and noticed that it was the same school song as San Antionio MacAurthur where I went to school back in the day! As I have watched the SLC Dragons play other schools from around Texas, I have realized that my joke about 4 or 5 songs is patheticly correct!

This year we started playing "The Chop" because the band found out that the players did it while they are in the tunnel/helmet.

We play "Sgt. Pepper's..." during the drill team show and during the game.

Last year we played some "krunk tunes" including "24's" and the like...supposedly they aren't allowed to play them anymore.

Play any tune but "Heeeeeyyyyyyy, Hey Baby"! I've heard that tune by every high school band at every game I've been to for years now. Please put that tune to rest. Katy's band finally DIDN'T play that tune last Friday nite. YEA!!

Dragon08, keep playing 'Eye of the Tiger'. I like it!!!!!!! Can you believe the Katy band director hasn't thought of playing that tune. Seems kinda like the natural thing to do when your mascot is a tiger.

Play ' If You Want Blood' by AC/DC.

I get really pumped when our drumline starts playing. Our line writes all their own music, and we've got some really good cadences too. "Dudit" "Tacos" "Texas Strut" "Peanut Butter" they're all awesome.
I know, the names aren't that great, but hey, they're awesome cadences.

My school's, Irving Macarthur, fight song is Notre Dame's too. I can''t really get all excited when we play our songs though. Land of 1000 Dance, Louie Louie, The Hey Song, Fly Like an Eagle (we say "fly like a cardinal, since, yknow, thats the school mascot) Superman theme, vader theme, (well i can kinda get into that). We play some of our show music in the sdatands every now and then too. Like, this year we did "pirates of the carriben" and it has some pretty kool parts in it that we played at fridays game against grand prarie (which we won, 31-3, still undefeated w00t!) I can get into songs like frankenstien and smoke on the water. but we dont play those very often.

and i am so friggin happy that we're #1 in district! thanks to sgp, who beat trinity! w00t!

Agree totally with the Hey, Hey Baby. I liked it better when they played Goodnight Sweetheart towards the end. And Katy Band DOES play Eye of the Tiger, and plays it often during playoffs.
I have been requesting songs from the band for years. (like since the 90's when my kids were there) I attended a Jr college game once and the stands totally rocked when the band played "Wipe Out" on good hits, "Another One Bites the Dust" and Takin Care of Business.
Katy Kids are also playing some Chicago stuff, (25 or 6 to 4) and they have no idea who Chicago is. Goes to show you, music is timeless.

I started playing guitar back in the 80's(NO HAIR BANDS!!!)...my dad used to play in a band when he was younger also. Well to my shegrin he gave me his '56 Gibson Les Paul Jr with a sunburst finish and sigle pickup and rosewood neck. They were cheap back in those days but I had it last appraised at $2k...All is in good order but the frets need replacing which I was told not to do since it may decrease its value. Now I just use my trusty Fender Tele on my Fender Twin Reverb Amp, which needs repair on the vibrato(for those who may know of a local music repair shop in Katy).

I would think whoever was appraising your Les Paul Jr. was trying to take advantage of you...It should be worth considerably more than that! They are pretty hot...The lead for Jethro Tull has always played a 50's era Jr. as well as several other well known guitarists

I don't know if anyone has said this yet but if you can take a look at Galveston Ball's band. It's like watching drumline. They play rap, and otiginal songs, they sway back and forth and dance to their music (the whole band not just the flag girls) and their drum majors are up on the podium with battons breaking it down. Man I can't wait for Friday's halftime show, well deserved break from these boring 20 minute long interpretive dances most of the 24-5a bands provide.

We play Eye of the Tiger all the time.

Nothing beats March Grandioso!!!

Plano wrote their own fight song decades ago, and still play it to this day.

Strivin is an orginal Lufkin tune written in the early 70's by an old director. It's sort of a staple there.

We also have the Jam Band that plays during the game. I can't tell you everything they play but I do know they pulled out We Ready this week, but I guess you have already heard about that one. ;)

The LP drumline writes their own stuff as well during the summer and at camp in August. They're okay but they have a hard time keeping tempo at times.

This year has been fun for the kids in the LP band with a new director. Before it was so regimented to the point where the kids did not or were not allowed per-sey to have fun. It's been a good year and I expect next year to be great. Football season is what it's all about for band. Concert season is okay but I hated it.

I like the SLC band too. They have a great sound and play really well with a lot of volume.

I think the Port Arthur Memorial band has been the best in the stands that I've heard to date. They rocked and had some very talented players. Can't march a lick, but play lights out. Their trumpet section killed some Bill Chase intros.

Plano wrote their own fight song decades ago, and still play it to this day.Nobody but Plano fans will likely care, but the Plano fight song is from a long forgotten Karl King march from the 30's entitled "Rifle Rangers". Our alma mater (to my knowledge) is original and was written by Emmitt Clem, band director during the 50's-60's. Come to the Plano band's spring concert next year to hear a set of humorous variations I wrote based on the fight song...

I will almost always "side" with the band. But "Iron Man" has no business being in the song list for hs bands. Or any band for that matter.

In fact, I'll go a little further... Rock sonds, and more importantly, metal songs, have no place on a bands play list. I know they're fun to play and think about and all that jazz, but those songs just don't belong.
I'll make a quick list of some that just DO NOT need to be there.
Anything by Ozzy or Black Sabbath
Anything by Metallica
Anything by AC/DC
Anything by ZzTop. Unless the band is in/from Texas. Homegrown thing. It's allowed.
Megadeth. NO
PinkFloyd. NO!!!
AliceCooper. NO.

That's about it. The band nerds long ago stole "eye of the tiger" away. We'll let ya keep that one. As sick as I am of hearing bands play it. Dont.

Oh yeah, "smoke on the water". That doesn't belong either.

Everything else should be fair game.

Last week while at the Abilene/SLC game I noticed at halftime that Abilene and Lewisville have the same fight song. Last year we were on the abilene side during the Carroll game so i could not hear it real well. This is the first time I have heard another school have the same fight song as us.

If your band had been playing "band" music the game might have been won.

Besides, I've yet to hear a band play Iron Man and actually get the drum parts anywhere near what it should be. And that's really sad as the drum parts are simple.

A couple of pet peeves when it comes to the bands:

1) Only a few bands have an 'entrance theme' when they enter a stadium - many have a drumline piece and others sort of just walk in. The entrance is an absolute opportunity for everybody in the stadium to know the band has arrived and is part of the event - but too few bands take that opportunity. These types of entrances are super when they are used in a constrained space - like coming through the tunnel at Texas Stadium - everybody knows you are coming in.

2) When playing in the stands, particularly those that are facing the field - most people on the SAME SIDE (i.e. supporters of your team) do not even hear you play since most bands point the instruments at the opposing side. So when the thread discussed getting pumped up - most of us can't even hear you. point the instruments to the side and let your own fans get some of that pumping up.

3) Not really band thing - but I am really not interested in the 'Senior Historian' or 'Girl of the Week' when the Rebelettes, Dragonettes or Leopardettes come out to the field for there little dance piece. Save the thirty seconds and just do the number.

I won't even get into getting some 'new' music - I've always wanted to get some Fleetwood Mac (how about that for new) music after USC band joined them at a concert. Tusk would be a great sitting piece and Don't Stop would be good out on field - let the flag corp do their wavy thing with that.

My thing is that mostly, band are butchering the songs. They the singing parts. WTF is that all about? Play the damn song. I think it would be best if the band played the song as it goes and was meant to be played and then, say.. the flutes played the melody. But the whole band playing the melody sounds ********. And as a musician, it offends me. And not that I really count for anything, but it just sounds stupid.

PLAY THE F-ING SONG PROPERLY!!! or don't play it at all.

I recall a band back in the day that played the Hawaii 5-0 theme. That was kool. Bands need to play songs with ZERO words. That way they have to play the actual song.

Axle-F is another a band could play.
Orion, by Metallica is ok. No words.
Devil went down to Georgia. But leave the melody out.

Don't want to revive a dead thread, as there is lots of great semi-final discussion going on but...

I agree with point number 1. But I believe for the most part, the audience cares less about the band's entrance anyway.

For point 2... you face towards the field for the most part to "distract" the opposing team when they are on offense. Sometimes I agree we should play to the audience, but oh well.
