Last week based on how the teams performed I would have said Texas, but this week it is USC.

Why won't they remain #1?
Margin of victory doesn't factor in anymore. USC beat a 3-4 team at home. Texas beat a 3-4 team on the road.
USC's opponents (past and future) went 3-4 today.
Texas' opponents went 6-5.
We'll pick up even more points in the computers vs. USC.

3 things: Coaches Poll, Harris Poll and average of 6 computer polls (throw out highest and lowest ranking).
Coaches Poll: total points divided by total possible = %
Harris Poll: total points divided by total possible = %
Computer Polls:
Sagarin: "In ELO-CHESS, only winning and losing matters; the score margin is of no consequence, which makes it very 'politically correct.'"
Anderson & Hester: "These rankings do not reward teams for running up scores. Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game. Margin of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered. "
Richard Billingsley: can't find a quote from his website
Colley Matrix: "The method is based on very simple statistical principles, and uses only Div. I-A wins and losses as input --- margin of victory does not matter"
Kenneth Massey: "These ratings are based on win-loss outcomes relative to schedule difficulty. Margin of victory is not used, and ratings don't reflect point differentials."
Dr. Peter Wolfe: "Running up the score is generally looked on as evidence of bad sportsmanship, behavior which should not be encouraged or rewarded. With this in mind, the BCS has chosen computer systems that use only won/loss data (and not scoring margin) to compute ratings."
Take the results of all 3 areas and average them. That's your BCS score.

thanks for the info, after reading that i think UT stays number one, thats who i voted for as number one in the poll, but wasnt sure if that would be true, this almost confirms my vote taht margin of victory does not matter

Only in Texas would USC not be #1 in a pole. I mean they have only won 2 champinships and not lost in 2 plus years. A little bias here maybe.

ESPN ran a viewer poll the other day. It was one of those polls were you could see how many people from each state voted for each team. Now, this was within a couple of days after Texas' win over Tech, but Texas was ranked #1 in every single state in the nation... including California and Virgina. This was a poll with over 200,000 votes cast so I think that represents a good sample.
John Q. Public sees Texas as being just as good or better than USC. The BCS computers see Texas as being just as good or better than USC (most of the computers show Texas to be a good deal better). Even in the human polls the margin between Texas and USC are relatively slim with several first place votes going in favor of Texas. I think USC deserves to be #1, but Texas aint far behind.

He asked Coach Mack to be the waterboy for Texas. So, they had him run some water drills and he couldnt lift the water jug when filled with 8 gallons and he kept spilling water,,,,, so he got "Cut". Since then he's had a hatred for Texas & Mack Brown..

Well im from Texas and I dont see how there is ANY WAY people could say UT is number 1 of USC..... lets see the trojans havn't lost a game in two and a half years and have one 2 straight national championships. People might want to talk about well they were getting beat by Oregon but they came back and killed them and it still remains the ducks only loss while UT got dominated in the first half by the worst team in the big 12. So USC beats 13th ranked Oregon 12th ranked Notre Dame w/e ranked Arizona State and if they beat undefeated UCLA then i dont see how anyone can say Texas is number one. Im not dogging Texas because they are having a great year, but USC still hasnt lost and VT is wrecking on everyone.
If VT beats miami and florida state in the acc championship than i think they are number one because they are playing better football than anyone with Marcus Vick and that nasty Hokie defense.

Obviously reading is not among your strong suits. I said this was a poll taken about a week ago. It was on the ESPN.com home page. Of course it is no longer up.
As I said, Texas doesnt deserve to be #1, but selective reading will render such statements silent in the cluttered minds of the delusional.

I know what you said and I know what I said. Point being the country may have thought that after UT beating Texas Tech but they sure changed their minds after the OK St. Game. Lets see what the public says after VTech-Miami Saturday :D

Somehow, based upon the target audience of this website being mostly Texans, I would guess that t.u. has a more than fair chance of winning this poll. Even TT-heads and other Gomers like me would be more inclined to vote for a big12 team --- gee.
But the fact is that the champs are the champs until someone beats them
USC is #1 right now.
