I was at the game last night and here is my assessment...

#1 SGP is very talented and they put it all together. Althought i predicted a Trinity win, I am not shocked at all that the warriors won. Let's remember they have 4 D-1 players on defense and most of those guys run a 4.7 or better.

#2 Their offense gelled and exposed some of the holes in the Trinity defense. Their game plan was well executed, stretching the field.

#3 Maybe most importantly they were fighting for their lives. A loss to Trinity would have put them in a must win situation against Coppell just to make the playoffs.

#4 Trinity may have been a little fat and happy. I know the coaches didn't underestimate SGP but when your closest margin of victory is 27 points in the 1st 2 months of the season, you start to believe the hype, it's almost impossible not to.

#5 SGP was the better team. They have one of the most underrated coaches in the state - (David Fisher) and i couldn't be happier for him and his program. It's surprised me that they haven't been mentioned on this board very much but i don't guess many of their fans have found this site.

#6 Most importantly conditioning, it was the 1st time all year that Trinity's starters played the full game. In the 4th quarter they got a little dead legged.

Summary,

I see a potentially long run through the playoffs for SGP depending on who they get in bi-district. Threir defense is the best i've seen and they still gave up 28 to Trinity. That was the litmus test for me, I've felt like all year that they would hold Trinity to their lowest output. I predicted 31 and they ended up with 28. Hats off to the Warriors, they proved they belonged with some of the best.

Trinity fans take heart. They needed a game like this and the one Thursday to tune up for the playoffs. That triple header at Texas Stadium is going to be outstanding...The top 3 in 5-5A and the top 3 6-5A are the best in the metroplex!

I like your analysis, except the part about the top 3 in both districts part...
Plano would massacre DR and #3 from 5-5a

6-5a is definately a great district though.

Plano would have to do something no other 5-a team other than Carroll has done to DR...beat them......I doubt it would happen...

:D I'm laughing at the beginning and end. :D Ryan won't beat Plano. Just because nobody, but SLC beat them, does not mean SLC is the only team that can beat them. I will guarantee that D Ryan does not get to the state semifinals and they won't have to play SLC along the way to do it.

Lonny, my point is not that only Carroll can beat them...it is a fact that they have played lots of quality 5-a teams in the playoffs and otherwise, other than Carroll & have never lost...youd have to admit that Plano is just showing a bit of quality after many down years...

I'm not sold on Plano yet. They are well coached and do not beat themselves but my gut feeling is their reg. season success doesn't translate into an extended run through the playoffs. Once i see the brackets i will re evaluate but for the moment i think they are the most likely of the undefeated teams to go out early. A matchup with Denton Ryan would be nice, the big question mark with Plano is how will they respond when they get into a "big game" situation? Their biggest thus far was Allen and Nathan Dick went out on the game's 3rd play so it became an easy win very early on.

It's definitely their first year back and teams make a quick exit sometimes when they do get back for the first time in a long time. Plano has a coach with experience and he might negate that. My viewpoint is a little different than some fans of 5-5A. I see DR as the 2nd best team in the district and one of the best in DFW, but down the list in the state pecking order. This year, I don't think they're 2nd best either. I think 3 teams in 6-5A and Plano are also better. Carter might be better and Rockwall has a chance. I think DR goes out in Round 1. They may surprise me and move on they have enough talent to make a run. They are a quality program.

My concern is the lack of big-game experience. The coach has it, but not the players.

They (DR) were the best team Carroll has played this year, & they lost a ton of talent to graduation..hard hitting bunch that will be a tough out in the playoffs

Lonny 23,

Bingo, Brence is a great guy and one of the better "old school" coaches left. What we don't know is about the character and heart of the team. It's obviously good to go from 0-10 as sophomores to 10-0 (if they win this week)
as seniors. The playoffs are a little different ballgame though, this will be one of the more intriguing story lines as the playoffs get underway.

Usually Plano lives for the playoffs. Usually their playoff performance greatly outshines their regular season performance. I have seen them lose to teams by 20 points the second game of the season, and play them in the playoffs and beat them by 20 points. Seen this a couple of times.

But, these players have not been apart of any of that, so who knows? My hope is the coaches know what to do in the playoffs and can get them ready.

There may be a case to be made that SGP has the best -- most athletic --defense in the state of Texas --

Who do you think lost alot of games for Plano??? not the players. Brence is so up and down it is hard to believe.

Great post, I agree with everything you said and came away with the same thoughts.
Conditioning was the key, Nance was gassed in the 4th and was not as productive as he should have been.
I also think this is the best thing to happen to Trinity, SGP has a solid defense and Trinity was still able to score 28, I would not want to be I-Mac next week.

The SGP defense executed the best tackling I've seen by any opposing team this year and better than most high school games I've seen on TV this year. They were able to bring offense and defense together for this game - they played great. Trinity will regroup and be ready for MacArthur next Thursday.

Good luck SGP!
