Links to my histories for all 246 Current 5A teams are now available below.
Let me know if any of the links are incorrect as I typed them all in pretty quickly.***
Enormous thanks goes to Jerry Forrest as well as Chris Lyke for their help and support in completing this project!
246 of the 246 current 5A programs are 99%+ complete with individual game results extending back to the first year of UIL 11-man varsity competition for every single team.

What about Los Fresnos? They were playing football back in the 1930's... so they are actually one of the older programs compared to other 5A schools
They competed in 6-man football up through 1948 and I don't have any of those records currently but here's all but the first 30 games that they played in 11-man competition:

50% of the current 5A schools have opened since 1967 but only 7 titles in the largest classification have been won by those 123 schools combined. Only 3 have been won by schools that opened after 1970.
In 1970, three different schools that would eventually go on to win a combined 4 titles fielded their first varsity teams: Austin Westlake, Euless Trinity and Brazoswood.
There have only been 3 additional schools to open since 1970 that have also won a largest classification title: Stratford (1st varsity season in '74), West Brook (1st season in '82) and Flower Mound Marcus (1st season in '86)
North Crowley, Hebron and Willowridge are all relatively young and have won 4A titles but haven't nabbed a 5A trophy yet.

I put together all but 4 seasons of Brazoswood's 39 year history (#118 on the list above) and it is definitely one for the record books. To this day, I believe Brazoswood is still the only program to go 10-0-0 in its first season ever, playing in the largest classification.
There have been a few teams who had 10-0-0 regular seasons in their first season moving up to the largest classification (e.g. Southlake Carroll in 2002) but I'm talking about first season ever for the school.
I know of only two other programs in the lower classifications who have done it and both of them had perfect seasons (Hamshire-Fannett's 12-0-0 inaugural season in 1961 in Class B, and Lubbock Estacado's 15-0-0 3A state championship inaugural season in 1968)
Brazoswood maintained the highest overall winning percentage in the state for the entire decade of the 1970's and continued to hold the #1 spot through a large portion of the 1980's until Permian surpassed them in 1984.
In their first 9 years of existence (if you include their initial year in 1969 playing a JV schedule) they lost only 6 regular season games.
Brazoswood Regular Season Records
1969 10-0-0
1970 10-0-0
1971 9-1-0
1972 9-1-0
1973 9-0-1
1974 9-1-0
1975 9-1-0
1976 9-1-0
1977 9-1-0
In 1973 they became the only program that I am currently aware of (although there probably are a handful of others out there), that went undefeated for the season, had no games forfeited, and still did not qualify for the playoffs.
Brazoswood was ranked #1 in the state going into the final game of the season against archrival Brazosport, who played them to a 14-14 tie and claimed the district title and right to advance to the playoffs by leading in penetrations 3-2, which was the tiebreak method used. Brazoswood ended the season with a 9-0-1 record.

From a sociological perspective it is truly interesting to see how this reflects the dramatic emergence of the Lone Star State from a rural orientation to an urban/suburban and now exurban nature. What's also interesting is how so many of the older 4A programs were at one time 5A, how the more stand-alone mid-size cities such as Longview, Tyler, San Angelo and the like have remained static in many ways, and some fo the original urban powerhouses in terms of size and power, such as some of the DISD, HISD and SAISD schools, have actually declined (in more ways than one, unfortunately). What is probably fascinating at the 4A level is the number of schools that have emerged in the "exurban" areas along the I-35 corridor (and other major transportation corridors), such as Steele, Hays Consolidated, Lehman and the like, and to a certain extent (at teh 5A level) schools like Judson, SLC and Katy which in many ways were arguably rural, then exurban and now suburban. From a purely sociological and historical perspective, I find all this truly fascinating

I agree... if you look at where most of the new school openings have occurred over the decades you find that Houston and DFW have essentially been alternating in the lead over the past 50 years (Houston in the 60's, 80's and 00's and DFW in the 70's and 90's) with the RGV having a real surge in the 1990's and the I-35 corridor in the 2000's.
The category listed as "Other" consists mainly of schools in smaller urban areas such as from Laredo, Corpus, the Golden Triangle, the Panhandle and the Permian Basin.

A large amount of data was compiled today and the original post now contains very nearly the complete histories of over half of the current 246 5A schools (134 to be exact).
It's amazing that the 140 schools that have opened in the past 45 years since 1964 have only won a combined 9 State Titles in the largest existing classification, with Trinity being the only program to have more than one...
whereas the 10 schools that got their start in the 3 season period from 1961-1963 have won a combined 15 titles in the largest classification, with 5 of the 10 schools each having won at least one.

UPDATE: At least the framework of the complete histories of 150 programs has now been posted on the initial post, with the majority of them 95-100% complete. I rearranged them in to the current district alignment for greater ease in finding particular programs.
Let me know of any errors or if you happen to know missing results and I'll gladly update the posts.
Also... let me know if any of the 150 links are not working as I typed them all in by hand, so it's quite possible a missed keystroke here or there could have made a link or two invalid.

As I have no idea what's going on over on texashsfootball.com where the majority of my historical files are posted... I'm adding in all of my histories for the 5A programs on to this post so that they will be accessible to those who want them.
If there's a year listed after the school name it means the history extends back to the initial varsity season... if not the history is incomplete
Links to my histories for all 246 Current 5A teams are now available on the original post.
Let me know if any of the links are incorrect as I typed them all in pretty quickly.

One correction should probably be made to SGP for last year's season. We did beat Irving 20-17, but we ended up having to forfeit because of our coach playing an ineligible player. So even though it hurts my school's history, I am just trying to make it more accurate. Should it still go down as a win because technically we did, or should it go down as a loss with an asterisk next to it.

I've amended the history and filled in a couple dozen missing scores while I was at it. Only 8 scores missing out of the entire SGP history now

The Lake Highlands history is now mostly complete except for 4 seasons in the early '80's.
In regards to consecutive winning seasons stats... I would have to add a new tracking measure on my database to accurately compile that so it would take me quite a bit of time. Pilot Point, Converse Judson, Plano and Harlingen are the teams that immediately come to mind, all of which have had 25+ season winning streaks at some point in their respective histories.
WO-S will notch their 25th consecutive non-losing season this year if they can win two more games (that darn 5-5 season in 2001 keeps it from being a winning season streak)

I'm working my way backwards to try to fill in as much of the Conroe history as I can... except for '72 and '73 the vast majority of the history is added in all the way back to 1951.
From Week 1 1979 thru Week 10 1980 Conroe went 19-0-1....
That must have SUCKED to go 9-0-1 and not qualify for the playoffs in '79
you put the 100 youngest 5A programs. i thought you meant the schools with the least number of years in class 5A.

The most recent histories completed (just this evening actually) were the Channelview and Pasadena Sam Rayburn histories. I've also extended both of the 5A 2008 State Championship program's histories back to their respective beginnings (Katy in 1939 and Allen in 1936).

WOS87 ... I see that you have Strake Jesiut listed with only four years shown. I'm guess that's how long they've been 5A right? I know we played them back in the mid 80's but I don't know what class they were in or if they were even in the UIL being a Catholic private school. Do you have Strake's history since they began playing football? I remember playing them and they were fairly tough. It would be interesting to see the history between Strake and my old school Columbia High.

I've done the Dallas Jesuit history back to their inaugural season of 1942 and have plans to work on Houston Strake Jesuit but just haven't gotten there yet... Strake has been around since the early 1960's but they competed in the TCIL through 1999, were independent from 2000-2003 and have only been allowed in the U.I.L. since 2004 which is why I've only got their season records since '04 listed in the original post. I'll put them on my "to-do" list but please realize that my "to-do" list is currently pretty long.... I'm a one-man show here :)
I'd also be interested in seeing their history as they have the claim to fame of being the first team EVER to play/beat West Orange-Stark, beating us 3-0 in our very first game in 1977. As that was the only time we ever played them, they are currently 1-0 against us, making them one of only 11 programs to have a winning all-time record against WO-S (out of about 70 different programs that we have played in the past 32 seasons).
In regards to West Columbia, I have 99%+ of their history at the link below, so you can see all of their games vs. Strake there. Looks like you first started playing each other in 1970.

Wow, thanks man. That's impressive. Thanks a lot.
The 87 in WOS87 .. would that be your graduating year from West Orange Stark? If so then maybe you played in that game against the Roughnecks that year which ended the 'Necks run. Wayne Williams was a sophomore when I was a senior. We had a pair of monsters in the backfield in '85 so thats why Wayne was a 2 in '85. By '87 Wayne was a straight up Bad A$$, no doubt. He had a great year in '87. But as you can see the talent ran thin for several years afterwards. Oh well, that's how it goes out there in the country especially after the oil field went away.

I think Permian had a better overall winning % than Brazoswood during the 1970s.
Permian 109-14 88.6%
Brazoswood 109-17-3 84.5%
No question both teams had a great decade, but I thought since we had the numbers in front of us I would split the hairs a bit.

True, but looking at overall winning percentages (which would include Permian's games since 1959) Brazoswood maintained a higher winning percentage until the early 1980's (again splitting hairs but that's what I was referring to in the original post quoted).

Brazoswood ended the season with a 9-0-1 record.
I knew of one other program, Sherman, who went 9-0-1 in the highest classification at the time (4A) in 1977, but didn't make the playoffs.
I didn't know who tied them and went to the playoffs, so I checked out the old Collier-Sharp site and WOS87's history to find out something interesting. (to me anyway)
Sherman began 1977 as AP's top ranked 4A team. Plano was the 13-4A team that tied them 14-14. Plano didn't break into the AP top 10 until the final week (No 9 and Sherman was still ranked ahead of them). Plano went on to win the 4A state championship and along the way beat No 8 Highland Park in the QF, No 3 Odessa Permian in the SF, and No 1 Port Neches-Groves in the Finals. Pretty tough row to hoe.
Interestingly, Sherman was the AP's top ranked 4A team when they played Plano the previous year and Plano also tied them that year 13-13. Plano lost their last two district games so Sherman made the playoffs but was tied by Temple (26-26) in the second round and Temple advanced.
So Sherman was ranked No 1 both years, was undefeated both years, but didn't make it any farther than the second round.
Thank you again WOS87 for all your work. It is amazing all you have put together.

True, but looking at overall winning percentages (which would include Permian's games since 1959) Brazoswood maintained a higher winning percentage until the early 1980's (again splitting hairs but that's what I was referring to in the original post quoted).
Good stuff WOS. Keep up with the data.

Very nice post AMustz. I don't want to get into a 2 state champ system vs 1 state champ system here, but when there was 1 state champ the playoff road was a beast. In 1989, the last year there was 1 champ, we played Arlington Lamar (quarters), Marshall (semis) and Houston Aldine in the finals. The next year when big school/small school started, those were 3 out of the 4 finalists. Week after week was brutal.

Thanks, and this is strictly in reply to your observation as to how tough it was.
In 1990 when we (Aldine) were playing in the Reg. Div. (it hurts me to say that) state championship, the week of the game the Houston Chronicle had a little blurb stating how tough it was at the top and saying that Aldine was trying to become the first preseason No 1 team since 1970 to win a state championship in the highest classification. So for the last 19 years of the one championship trip the preseason pick didn't win it. That probably is a combination of a few bad picks and a lot of brutal district and playoff runs. 12 of those years only one team from each district made it. I thought we were never going to make it out of Houston. '89 was the first year we did.

This is great info. Smithson Valley won 43 games from 1976 to 1992. It took Larry Hill 5 years to win 43 games. We had to be everybody's favorite homecoming opponent.

UPDATE: Just added in Bryan High and Klein High histories bringing the total up to 214 out 246
In checking out some of Klein's seasons that I was kind of familiar with I saw they went 9-0-1 in 1979 with a 14-14 tie with Conroe as the only blemish. Checked out Conroe's 1979 season and found they went 9-0-1 as well. Klein advanced but those two teams must have been very even. At the end of the regular season Conroe had scored 399 points and given up 63. Klein had scored 339 and given up 39. Temple put a 38-7 whipping on Klein in bi-district and went on to win the state championship.
That makes three teams in the seventies who finished 9-0-1 and stayed home, all with 14-14 ties on their records.
Incidentally Klein and Aldine tied 14-14 in 1981 and Aldine finished the season 9-0-1, but Klein wasn't in our district so, no sweat, but what is it about 14-14 and 9-0-1.

I can guarantee that there were many more games played prior to 1909 than I have listed, but since the UIL wan't even founded until 1909, the only official games prior to 1909 on record with the state are those against UT and Texas A&M. After the 1900 Great Hurricane news coverage of local football was minimal or nonexistant so there are very few or no extant records of most of the earliest games.
Below is a first hand account of what is likely the first football game played by the Ball high school team and one of the earliest games played by a high school squad in the state of Texas.

WOS87, you do great work, but you have a mistake on Judson's history. In Judson's first year of football, 1962, you have them at 3-9-0. They won 4 and lost 5 their first year. It appears you have the Rocksprings score backwards. Judson won that game 45-6 and you have them losing by that score. I have double checked it with the schools records and went down to the SA library and researched all of Judson's scores from that year and according to both the SA Express paper as well as the defunct SA Light paper, Judson did win the Rocksprings game. That means that Judson's season opening win was the programs 400th. I believe I saw another thread somewhere on this board comparing programs fastest wins to 100, 200, 300, and so on. Judson reached 400 in 575 games. Their overall record all time is currently at 401-167-10. After the win against SA Warren in wk 0, their all time record was 400-165-10. Just thought you should know, I know how you pride yourself on being accurate.

also, do you have your 4A and below stuff listed somewhere? thanks

i think there's another error i see. for Leander 1986 you have Waco Midway listed as a nondistrict opponent and i am almost certain they were a district. i believe 86-87 9-4A consisted of: Belton, Taylor, Waco Univ., Waco Midway, Leander, Bastrop, Del Valle, and Pflugerville. so there could be errors to all those other teams if midway was left off as a district opponent.
the reason i noticed this is i'm going back and putting together all of the district standings that Pflugerville's been in and also all the opponent's schedules. i have both complete to 1988 but i'm still working on the earlier years.
i'd appreciate if you could take a look at that.

WOS87,
Awesome work! A great way to go back in time for me. I do have a question though; what, if anything, do you do with the once 5A schools that are no longer in existence?
I know that the history is on the current 5A schools, but I would love to be able to see Spring Branch and Westchester High records in one place.
Both schools were in the Spring Branch School District (in Houston) and both were shut down at the end of the 1984 school year. I'm sure that these are not the only 5A programs that were replaced by newer schools or that were shut down for lack of students in the state.
It's actually disappointing not to be able to follow your own high school's team anymore. :(
Anyway, thanks for the wonderful job you've done compiling this history of the greatest sport in the greatest state!

Wow,
Guess that's what that Search button is for! I should have known you had them posted somewhere! Thanks.
Interesting bit in looking at the SBISD records, Northbrook and Stratford opened the same year(1974), and while Stratford has been a State champion and has multiple successes in the playoffs, Northbrook has never played in a single playoff game! Ouch!
Thank you again sir!

It looks like you did most of this in excel. I was wondering if you could post the actual spreadsheet with all this information? That would be great.

I'll look into the other 9-4A teams from the '86-'87 alignment but I already know that my work on the current 4A teams is lacking compared to 3A and 5A. Please be patient.

In 1973 [Brazoswood] became the only program that I am currently aware of (although there probably are a handful of others out there), that went undefeated for the season, had no games forfeited, and still did not qualify for the playoffs.
I was there for that game. It was quite a heartbreaker for Brazoswood. Of course they got their state title the next year! Maybe Coach Bryan's ghost is watching over them and this will be their year again!

WOS,
This is great stuff and I really appreciate the hard work you've put in for this.
In 1965 you have Bay City beating Dickinson in the playoffs but it was Bridge City. Steve Worster played on that Bridge City team that later went on to win the NCAA title with Texas and he took Bridge City to the state finals that year.
Thanks

Let me double check but I'm pretty sure it was Bay City. I have Dickinson losing to Bay City 6-7 in Bi-District in 1965 with Bay City losing to Bridge City in the Quarterfinals the next week 3-21.

Just as an FYI. I'm going to start updating all of the 5A histories to add on the 2009 results as I just completed doing just that to the 3A histories.

WOS,
Thanks for the input and I appreciate it.
All through grade school and those years we were told it was Bridge City???
I now need to reference a 1964 yearbook which is easy enough to do and find out what they have.
Thanks,

I'm in the process of changing jobs currently so am a bit preoccupied. I will update to the 2010 Alignment and work on completing the histories of all the previously 4A schools that are moving up as soon as I can.
