I cruised over to Huffmeister yesterday for some football. Falls had a good turnout (at the HS stadium), and it looks like they had a crawfish boil going pre-game.
Kolby Gray and Christian Norris look like they've done some growing/bulking up this off-season. Norris (Jr. to be) looked just as tall as Gray, and Gray is listed at 6'2.
I thought Gray looked really good last night. He got lit up a few times (wasn't wearing the customary "I'm off limits" yellow jersey), and his teammates weren't about to take it easy on him. I was impressed with Gray when I saw him last year. For the most part, he located the ball really well and went to the right places. Norris mainly played the decoy role last night, but I'm not fooled :) . The guy looks like a stud.
The Eagles showed off a freshman QB (soph to be) named EJ Johnson, Jr. who made a few very impressive gallops with the football. He had some of the longest strides I think I've seen (really stretched it out). He'll be one to watch, but he'll obviously play sub-varsity this season unless he can play another position. Mr. Gray has his spot locked down I think.
Eric Williams and Zach Gilmore will be two of his main targets out wide this season. Gilmore dropped the first pass of the scrimmage (hit him right in the chest), but atoned for it a few plays later with a one-hander by the sideline (and with a defender draped on him). Williams got in space a couple times and showed his quickness. They've got a receiver named Jordan Henry, a senior, who has some length but he and Gray got crossed up a few times. I don't think Henry was on varsity last year, so they'll have to work on that chemistry.
The receiving corps overall is smaller, but they all bring something to the table athletically. Williams is very quick, and I'm sure they'll try and get him the ball any way they can. I can see him being used like Jack Freeman a couple seasons ago.
The OL has some size to it. Returning starter Matt Eureste leads that group at about 6'3 290.
Cy Falls allowed their defense to be aggressive overall last night, and they were able to get after their offense on occassion. Like I mentioned above, Gray took a few really quality shots (the kind I'm sure had Falls faithful holding their breath). I believe senior LB Chase Parker got in one of those hits. I saw a couple of sophomores running with the first team unit, so Falls could have somewhat of a youth movement on defense this year.
Overall, I think the Falls coaches will be happy with that scrimmage. The players competed and got after one another. I didn't see anyone go down with an injury (always the important part), so I say mission accomplished overall for Falls. It appeared they had most of their returning guys from last year suited out.
