Tonight is crosstown rival week in 3-5A. Most of you fan out there don't get to experience anything like this so we are VERY lucky out here in West Texas. Favpack knows what I am talking about.
You take a stadium that has a normal capacity of anywhere from 15,000 (Shotwell) to 19,500 (Ratliff) and you somehow squeeze another couple of thousand of fans in there for a REGULAR SEASON GAME. Many times, there are district titles or playoff seeding at stake (as if you need any additional motivation). You play in a stadium that you share with your crosstown rival on alternate weeks. Literally every big play has someone from one side or the other screaming so there is lots of noise. Nobody sits for more than a couple of minutes. Heck even the $3.00 nachos taste a little better than usual.
You can win the district title and still fell a little empty if you don't win the big shootout with your rival. Who wants to have to face the ridicule you face when you go to work, church, mall or wherever and face the fans from the winning team? And you put up with that for a year!!
ktchamp97, I assume you are going to your first Midland-Midland Lee game tonight. It should be a barn-burner with MHS prevailing I predict. It would be interesting if you would post your thoughts late tonight or tomorrow about the experience. I hope you get to go.
To all the teams out there tonight: Be safe and as eagleii says over on the LSWC site: Good football to you.

That's the way it was for Judson-Madison in 2002 and Judson-SV in 2004. I guess it will be SV-Madison this year.

Yep - should be awesome out West Haze! I think the Midland game will be much better than the Abilene one - but the Coogs always place tough against AHS.
Does anyone besides me remember the Snow Bowl from 1977? The Eagles' speed was going to erase a decade+ of frustration against Cooper. Then a freak snow storm blows in and it snows like 5 inches during the game! Another bitter loss to the Cougers. I think it was around 1981 before the Eagles finally got that monkey off.

Was this the game that Gov. Rick Perry did the coin flip?

No, that was 2002. I heard they had over 20K for that game in 2002.

It was huge - both Abilene and Cooper came into the game undefeated and ranked in the top 5 in the state. Very good game.

Actually, I had the day off today, so I'm going to take advantage of probably my only chance to get out and see a game at Shotwell. I'm gonna meet jtk and Coug78 for the Abilene vs. Cooper game. I wish I could be in both places at once, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to catch a Coogs-Eagles game...even if it should be a bit one-sided.

I like to do the Midland-Odessa double play. Go to one game and then switch stadiums!

I was away at college at that time but I remember hearing about it. The Coogs always found a way to beat us back then- even controlling the weather!!
