Last night I got a chance to go to the Garland vs Rowlett football game with a few friends of mine, and what a game it was. Lived up to all the hype. A tremendous game played by two VERY GOOD teams. Two very good defenses, Rowletts big play offense and Garlands ball control running game. All of these aspects of the game kinda played out the way you might think they would when two good teams mix it up. Garland had two very businesslike drives at the start of each half. Rowletts Defense stepped up and 3-and-outed Garland at several key points in the game. Garlands Defense made it VERY hard to run the ball. Rowletts Offense started throwing the ball successfully (scored their first TD on a 21 yd pass). The difference in the ballgame was special teams. The opening kickoff was muffed by Rowlett and gave them the ball inside the 5yd line. Two great punts by Garland pinned Rowlett inside the 5 again twice. Then there was the little onside kick after the first TD. I've never understood why some teams don't put someone in the middle on kickoff return. Well it cost Rowlett last night. All though Garland didn't score they did keep the momentum and ran some time off the clock. Then pinned Rowlett inside the 5 with a great punt. Rowlett missed a FG just before half. Special teams made the difference last night. It was a GREAT GAME to see. I'm glad the Owls won. But WOW, when you look at the Playoff Bracket Rowlett has a great chance to play for a long time. GOOD LUCK to both teams in the playoffs.
