Thanks forest99. You guys played very well and our guys knew that the only chance we had was to try and score every time we had the ball. I must say that our guys could not stop I believe his number was 3 from catching the ball. Even when we had 2 guys on him he would get up and get the ball. That guy must have a 40" vertical. You guys should not have a problem making it to the state tournament with the talent you showed especially if you had 4 starters out. Good luck. Will you be at the Cy Creek SQT?

I wish I could have had more options on the Poll, I only had 10 so I naturally took out the 2 teams that already qualified and that left 4 teams out. I have to be 100% honest I have never heard of your school. I will look you up tonight and try and learn as much as I can but I will be the first to admit your School did not register on my radar.

Edcouch-Elsa High School is known for having a strong football team, they have been the 32-4A District Champions for five years in a row. They were the District and BiDistrict champions for the 2007-2008 school year.

Let's not forget Weslaco High will also be attending the tourney. Last year they were 10-3 eventually losing in the regional quarterfinals to San Antonio Madison. The Panthers were the state's highest scoring offense according to this website (averaging 45.2 points).
Last summer, Weslaco also qualified to the 7 on 7 State Championships. They made it out of their pool to the Championship bracket before they fell to Houston Stratford 20-14.
Returning for the Panthers - Dylan DeLeon - 3 year starter - has 54 total touchdowns (40 passing in two years)
All his receivers are returning led by Jr. Jacob Chapa (6'2" 190 lbs).
On defense they are led by FS Mel Valdez (6'3 210).
According to my buddy down in Weslaco, they are still working out alot of the kinks and might not be at full speed this weekend but he feels it's a great time to break in the new kids.

oh GOD...maybe we should talk about how Weslaco was included in that record 37 game winning streak. How your 5A school needed their best rb in their schools history and top offense in the state to beat our 4A school by 1 point. Its just spring football nothing to get upset about, even if we did beat the stuffing out of you 40-6.

Congrats to Weslaco and Edcouch Elsa! No respect was given to these two fine programs but in the end they showed they have what it takes to compete at this level.
Jacket boys, take a class in humility. Yes, the Jackets beat the Panthers but the Panthers did not play their studs in the final because many of them were cramping. At halftime, the score was 21-21. The Panthers then took out all the starters as they did not want to risk further injury. This crown was not important at all, as the eye is on the state championship. Heaven knows, that if the Panthers go full throttle, they will dismantle the Jackets. Don't worry Jacket boys, the Panthers will see you down the road. Oh by the way, the Panthers start 8 freshmen. Not bad for such a young team.
Great compliment paid to Dylan DeLeon (QB) by the Texans staff. They said he was the best passer in the whole tourney. They told him to work on a couple of things but were very impressed. Congrats.

woooow lol...now texas football can see how Weslaco makes excuses. When we spanked you 46-6, your excuse was it was a "practice game" and you didn't play all your players. Now you're stating you didn't play hard to avoid further injury (weak imo) and played younger players only. But one of your panthers on rgvsports is making the excuse that Weslaco didn't want to tire themselves out, so they decided to have "fun" with the game and put players in positions they normally didn't play?? So which one is it?? :D

Ok, I have to say something. I was personally there at all of Weslaco's games, including the final. We were going to forfeit the game and just give the trophy to EE b/c both of our starting corners were cramping and so was our stud receiver for the entire day. THose three guys were very important and we didn't want to risk any further injury. Then they told us we had to play, so those three guys did not play at all...that stud receiver had 4 td's in the semifinal against friendswood. If you weren't at the game, you didn't feel the atmosphere. Anytime a player from EE messed up, i heard someone angrily yell, "C'mon!! It's the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!!!" Weslaco: THey were laughing their butts off the entire time. the coach was kicking field goals during half time, dylan was playing middle linebacker, Eric Guzman (HB) was at CB, robert donalson (DE) was at the other CB, Marco (LB) was at FS, Fernie Fuentes (OLine) was at SS, Jacob Chapa (WR) was at Outside LB, JImmy (LB) also got in there at S, Melchor (FS) went a couple of downs at QB, Larry (Center) also played QB while Fernie was at WR. I mean, c'mon, if you're proud of beating this lineup, then Congratulations :notworthy

Hehe, you see, I don't know if you noticed, but football is a game. When it stops being fun is when you should stop playing. Weslaco got what it wanted, to prove a point that the valley belongs in the same conversation as Houston and a trip to state. State is way more important than risking injury, so the question I ask to you is, "Why not have some fun?"
but...both teams repped the valley and both will rep at state. Should they face each other in the state tourney, then both teams will be at 100%, I guarantee it! Valley rivals upstage Houston at Texans SQT
Saturday May 24, 2008
Written by Dave Purpura
For all the Houston-area schools competing at Saturday's 7-on-7 state qualifying tournament, the finals turned into a rekindling of a competitive rivalry from 350 miles away.
Edcouch-Elsa and Weslaco, two schools located less than 10 miles apart outside McAllen and about 20 minutes from the Mexico border, barreled through the 16-team field at the Methodist Training Center to meet for the first time since Weslaco ended Edcouch-Elsa's 36-game winning streak last season.
Saturday, Edcouch-Elsa clinched a state tournament berth for the fifth consecutive year, then doubled up fellow qualifier Weslaco 56-21 in a championship game that meant little more than bragging rights.
"I was like 'Weslaco?' " said Yellow Jackets tight end Aaron "Artie" Tanguma, who had seven touchdowns in five games Saturday. "They're an underrated team; I guess we are too. It was a good game; one we didn't think was gonna happen."
Tanguma, receiver Alex Cisneros and quarterback Eric Nino spearheaded a potent attack that scored 200 points in five games Saturday. The Yellow Jackets defeated Cypress Woods (40-26), Cypress Creek (39-24) and Channelview (41-35) before edging Baytown Lee 39-26 in the semifinals.
Arkansas, Miami, Texas State, Sam Houston are among the schools interested in Tanguma, who stands 6-foot-4.
"It takes a lot of work. Our kids aren't very big - anyone they face is going to be a lot bigger and more talented - but they have a lot of heart and they play hard," Yellow Jackets coach Joe Solis said. "They have a great tradition they have to represent."
Weslaco secured its berth by upsetting Friendswood 50-44 in overtime. Its pool play wins were against Texas City, Second Baptist and Lamar.
"As soon as I knew they (Edcouch-Elsa) were in this tournament I knew they were going to be tough," Panthers coach Eloy DeLeon said.
Weslaco thrived last season with Mishak Rivas, a Texas State signee who rushed for a Rio Grande Valley-record 3,300 yards and 47 touchdowns. He had 431 yards against San Benito.
"But this is a new group," DeLeon said. "We were able to do this with eight freshmen on the team and we have a three-year letterman back at quarterback, Dylan DeLeon, and he had an outstanding tournament. We're gonna have to hang our hat on defense next year; we have three freshmen starting over there. We're real proud to come out here and represent the Valley well."
Cypress Woods, preparing for its first varsity season, scored 123 points to Edcouch-Elsa's in Pool B but went 2-1. Other outstanding local performances came from Alief Taylor, which went 2-1 in Pool A and lost by a point to Baytown Lee; and Friendswood, which averaged 43 points.
Lamar came within a hair of qualifying for the second straight week. It lost in the final seconds to Chavez in the Manvel SQT seven days prior.
The state tournament won't be the end of Edcouch-Elsa's exposure. They'll attend a 7-on-7 tournament at LSU the next week.
"We come from a small close-knit community and the kids don't see all the things people up here do," Solis said. "They need exposure. They need to come out. This gives them a little confidence."

btw...are injuries even that common in SPRING football?
yea, they are...nothing really serious, like season threatening, but enough to be a bother. Pulled hamstrings, cramps, etc. At the tournament, it was really just a whole bunch of cramps. One our receivers cramped in the 3rd game, didn't play the rest of that game, caught 4 tds in the semi-final before cramping again on the 4th td. I'm sure they didn't want to risk causing a more serious injury my making him play on it again. Pretty similar situation with the others, just cramps, but took precautions as to not escalate the potential injury.
