Best of luck...

Former Klein Collins offensive lineman Matt Allen seemingly had it all in front of him at LSU.

A Rivals 250 member from the class of 2006, Allen had played on a national championship team last season and was backing up senior Herman Johnson at offensive guard.

However, with a change in offensive line coaches, the 6-foot-3, 290 pound Allen decided that the Tigers weren't the program for him any more. He asked for and was granted his release from LSU approximately two weeks ago and it started the recruiting process all over again.

Allen contacted coaches at Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M after his release but early in the process decided that if new A&M boss Mike Sherman wanted him, he would be headed to College Station.

"Coming out of high school, they were pretty much my top choice" Allen said of the Aggies. "It's only an hour and twenty minutes from home. I went to A&M one last time before going on my official visit to LSU. I was hoping something would come of that but it never did so I went to my second choice."

Thursday evening, that's exactly what happened.

"I talked to Coach Sherman yesterday and he asked me if I wanted to join the team" said Allen. "I was pretty excited. I can't wait to get down there."

Allen was asked if the new staff was a big influence on his decision to transfer to College Station

"I really liked the staff" he said. "They are going to a power offense with quick, fast, strong lineman. I think I fit the mold pretty well."

How does Allen feel about offensive line coach Jim Turner?

"I think he's a real good coach" Allen said. "He sounded real stern. I think he's going to keep everyone real disciplined. He will mold all of the offensive linemen into one unit. I think he'll do real well."

Ironically enough, Allen is a former high school teammate of A&M running back Mike Goodson.

"I talked to him yesterday" said Allen. "He was pretty excited."

Allen will have to sit out the 2008 season due to NCAA transfer rules. However, he still has two years of eligibility remaining and is expected to provide immediate help in 2009 to an offensive line that lost four starters from the 2007 team including NFL draftees Cody Wallace and Corey Clark.

Allen is the highest rated offensive lineman (per Rivals.com) to join A&M since Michael Shumard (also a four star prospect) signed with the Aggies in 2005. Allen is rated as a strong drive blocker with good feet and should fit in well with the Aggies' zone blocking schemes that they will be using in the pro style offense that Sherman and offensive coordinator Nolan Cromwell have installed.

GREAT NEWS!

It's too bad we can't plug him in this year but O-line is a place we want to work on. Hard to believe that he even went on a visit to A&M, it was his top choice, and he didn't get an offer from Franny.

I have a hard time believing he didn't get an offer either. Think he did and decided to go to LSU instead or didn't get an offer at all?

You can never tell whether they're telling the truth or not, but that's what the kid says. It really sounds strange to me...you'd think that if LSU was interested in a lineman A&M might could find a spot on the roster.....

Anyway, I'm glad he's gonna be wearing maroon for two years. Immediate impact.

I just don't get it. He was a top OL prospect and wanted to go to A&M. Apparently it "didn't work out" and he ended up at LSU. Sophomore year he wins a NC and 4 months later he wants to leave?

Something not adding up...

On the surface...it sure looks like the change in management at A&M made a difference...

Klein Collins offensive lineman Matt Allen committed to LSU in April of last year when he took an unofficial visit to the Tigers campus.

Klein Collins offensive lineman Matt Allen is a solid commit to LSU.
Last summer, Allen unofficially visited Oklahoma and Oklahoma State but remained committed to the Tigers and took no more visits elsewhere during the fall except to LSU. With signing day nearing, Allen was asked if he was contemplating visits to any schools other than LSU.

"Oh no, no," said Allen. "I'm still quite firm to LSU. In fact, I'm going on my official visit this weekend."

Allen noted that he cut off contact with other schools about three weeks ago.

"Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Houston, TCU and Florida were all talking to me," he said. "I've never really had much contact from A&M, Texas Tech or Texas. They never really contacted me or offered me. I never really understood that."

Allen has had an in-home visit from LSU head coach Les Miles and is looking ahead to his trip to Baton Rouge this weekend.

"I'm just looking forward to going out with the guys and getting to know the team," he said.

Allen is a four-star recruit per Rivals.com and is ranked as the 39th best player in the state of Texas by Rivals.com.

How does a Rivals 250 player being recruited by schools like LSU, Tenn, Alabama, Florida, and OU not get much interest from the three big in-state schools. That's just weird.

A lot of players that get looks by out of schools state perform well in camps and combines. If they have good times they're gonna get a letter, you can bet on that. The Texas schools are just way better evaluaters at talent then OOS schools. They also understand how talent stacks up from 1A-5A.

Allen (6-3, 295) signed with LSU in 2005, redshirted in ‘06 season and did not play a down last year. Allen served as a backup in spring drills to left guard Herman Johnson and right guard Lyle Hitt.

“It was part of my decision to move on instead of sitting and not playing here,” Allen said. “I didn’t get to play last year and I was pretty upset about that because I felt I could play.”

Call me crazy, but I think Okie, Okie Lite, and LSU (who all expressed interest) manage to get scouts out to Texas HS football games and have a pretty good idea of the differences in classification......but I may just be talking crazy here:rolleyes:
