Garland won a very tight, hard fought game against an excellent Rowlett team tonight. Dante Sloan's return was key, as he contributed big yardage on a first half TD drive and several other time consuming drives before leaving the game in the third quarter with a sprained ankle (he should be okay by next week). Rowlett's all world back Andre Pierce was held in check for much of the night by the swarming Owls defense - he did take a swing pass and run for 40+ yards, but never broke a long run on the Owls. GHS led 14-7 at the half after holding off an RHS scoring threat late in the 2nd quarter. The Eagles missed a short field goal before the half.
Garland surged ahead by two touchdowns after a methodical drive in the third quarter. After that, Rowlett came to life. RHS pinned the Owls deep in in their own territory following a punt - then intercepted a deep pass from Greg Hunter. Following the turnover, RHS used short passes and short but tough runs to move the ball deep into Owl territory. The Eagles scored to on the first play of the 4th quarter, making the score 21-14. RHS then held the Owls to three plays, recieved a punt and started an impressive, time consuming drive that featured three or four third down conversions. The Owl defense was wobbly and reeling when Brandon Antwine swatted a pass at the line of scrimmage that was intercepted by the Owls. Garland ran out the clock to win the game and sew up the district title.

What a game by both teams. RHS is one helluva football team and should be congratulated on their effort. Garland played well, too, making huge plays when needed to escape HBJ with the win. Good luck to the Eagles in the playoffs - make some noise and represent the district well!

Way to GO OWLS! DISTRICT 11-5A CHAMPS!!!

Props to Rowlett who showed me they are a very good football that I underrated!! They played a heck of a game and played there butts off. It feels good to say we are district champs again.

Jared Knorton is very good at football as he was all over the field tonight making tackles

I too underestimated Rowlett. I'd seen then twice and I just didn't think they had the defense, other than Norton, to stop our offense. I was dead on though on my assessment of the Garland D and what Rowlett had to do to win. Rowlett did establish somewhat of a passing game, but not enough of one to get the Owls off the line to get Pierce some running lanes. I said elsewhere that if Garland could hold Pierce to 150 yards or less that they would win, and I was right. He had 23 carries for 85 yards. 150 or less, to me, meant that Pierce didn't break too many big runs, and Rowlett has sort of depended on the big play all year. They did score their first TD on a nice 20 yd pass play, but never established a vertical passing game, and they paid the price for it.

Rowlett should make some noise in the playoffs as it appears they may draw some beatable teams in the first couple of rounds, at least. Best of luck to them.

District Champs again!!

GO OWLS!!!
WE WILL WIN!!!

I read every Garland thread that comes up since I moved to Garland this summer but never jumped in the middle of the "bickering", but I had to rub my eyes and make sure I read that correctly--did Roughrider really just give Garland some Praise????

What is the world coming to?

I've never said they were a "bad" team... Just the opposite, I've given them credit several times for being athletic....

Haha, you are right, sounds like a "non-negative" comment coming from Rough. He must think we have an awesome football team don't you Rough???

One negative I want to draw from this game.. I saw a certain Garland defender (not going to throw a number out) talking mess to our offensive line coach. I don't care who you THINK you are or who you MIGHT be, you keep it on the field. I just pissed me off to see a kid mouth off to a coach. Other than that, great game.

The Dallas Morning News said it best... there were alot of "What-ifs" that could have turned this game around. But anyone who has ever stepped on that field knows that what-ifs don't mean one thing.

Good enough to squeak by two teams (Row/SG) who are undersized(Rowlett not near as much as SG)... Let's seem them match up against the Longviews and the Carters, teams with equal size??? That will tell what kind of team you have!!

Following the game, the defensive lineman was hugging two RHS coaches... Probably just intensity... I do wish our players wouldn't do stuff like that so much...

I wasn't able to see the game, I was at home injured. Were there any big hits? Or any great plays? Or was it a slow game, Someone please help me out here.

It wasn't slow by any means and we were actually on teh recieving end of some hits. Of course, J-Murph nad the rest of the D and especially the special teams had some big hits of their own. Try to catch it on the Garland channel if you get it...

We've actually played Carter already and we barely lost by 1 touchdown...nice try though. We've played the big boys and we were a different team then.

Hey rough, I think Garland already matched up with Carter pretty well and only lost 21-14. I am also pretty sure there were alot of injurys going into the game, so I think if they see them again in RD. 2, it will be another close game.

Also Garland knows what kind of team they have.... they actually play real teams in non district.

Rowlett is a solid team, they are alot better than anyone says. No one is saying anything about any school. Rowlett would of won hands down if it were not for turnovers. But then again, that is a big part of the game.

But its all over now, Congrats Garland on bringing back the trophy to g-town. I think my senior year (02) was the last year we won it without any ties. (2003, 3 way tie). Also good luck to Rowlett as they make their first appearence to the playoffs!!!!!

Yeah, lets just hope this year Lakeview doesn't come within 3 of winning it. lol.. I remember reading that in the paper the next day and I had to double take. I was like there's no way that says 27-24. But with the playoff's locked up, I'm sure G-Town put in alot of guys that don't play the whole game. After all, it is a GAME and is all about having FUN.

Yeah, I did the same thing last year. But I think that we will remain undefeated. :)

To the "owl" posters, Thank You for the positive comments regarding Rowlett. In the past I have read post about some of the actions of some of the Owl players. I attended the game and did see a couple of the guys do their thing after some of the plays, but I also saw some of the players helping Rowlett players up after a hit or tackle. Thought it was a hard fought game with two good teams. Difference was kicking game and bounce ;of ball.

Good Luck in ;the playoffs. If Rowlett gets Longview, you'll should go a long way.

I know exactly what you're talking about, but you got the story wrong sir. After the game, Devonta Brown started getting krunk with the district champs cheer the Owl fans were throwing out. #20 Miller stepped up on him and said something about Garland really not being that good and some other things, and some of the Rowlett coaches came over to break it up before anything happened. I'm sure Brown was just justifying himself.

Both teams played great games and I was more than impressed with Rowlett. That was a much different team than I saw in the first few weeks. Congrats to Rowlett and good luck!

No, this happened during the game. 1st or 2nd quarter.

Yeah, there's always alot of trash being talked on the field. I was usually the one doing it haha, but it's all just in the heat of battle and most of the things I said, and that were said to me didn't go farther than the 48:00 minutes.

Congrats to Garland for winning district! I like to see Garland do well in the playoffs even though our districts compete with one another in round one. Good luck to the Owls in the playoffs! I'll be keeping an eye on you guys. :)

Hey, NMHS! Haven't seen a lot from you this year. You should get out to an Owl playoff game this year...

I miss playing the Stallions. It would be nice if a non-district meeting could be arranged...

we might just get to play them next year as the 8th team added to our district, but who knows. also, its a possibility with the new nondistrict schedule. but for now, lets just focus on the games still to be played this year.
