He doesn't have Sheriff Painter to take care of him any more. What a waste he has turned out to be. I thought he was one of the best high school backs I had ever seen but he doesn't have the heart to play in the NFL.

I don't care who you are - a drunk driver on a 30 footer with 15 people on board will be an issue - and a real danger.

Benson refutes the story the arrest and claims the charges are unfounded. I don't know if I really believe him but... He said in the year he has owned the boat, he has been questioned by lake police six times, according to the Tribune.

"Random safety inspection..." Come on give me a break I've been boating on that lake since I was 5 with my dad and have YET to have a "random safety inspection."

Hook'em,,,did you have 15 people on your boat? If you do, you will get checked. I believe Ced, he wasn't intoxicated,,,he was stoned.

Have you had a 30' boat since you were 5???
There are thing you can do to attract undesired attention...
Somebody on the boat was probably doing something...during most of those ramdom inspections...

In most lakes you will get a random stop about every 3rd time out...definately will get stopped every time you have 15 people on your boat. They are serious about life preservers, fire extinguishers, etc.

Yeah - I don't even own a boat - and have taken part in 2 RSI's the past 5 or so times I've been out. They are very serious deals - counting life preservers, lights, etc. Maybe they unfairly questioned Benson a little, but I bet it was probably justified.

A friend of mine sent this interview with Cedrick's Attorney. The interview starts at 11:07. Some might think there is more to this.

The boat we owned wouldn't hold 15 people but I've been on lake Travis on yachts with that amount or more and have yet to be "randomly inspected for safety." Besides, being stoned isn't illegal, smoking is.

The thing Cedric Benson did to attract unwanted attention was being famous.

Isn't being under the influence of any drug illegal while driving.

I know this to be true. I mostly fish at Sam Rayburn and they are not real bad there, but the game wardens at Lake Nacogdoches used to be real bad about checking your boat.

Every summer we read about somebody getting their little boat swamped or some drunk running over a waverunner or somesuch...I don't think it's "bad" for them to check out the boaters...I want to keep my kids safe while we tube, ski, and wakeboard...and I always have all the safety gear. Bad things can happen on the water, even when you do things right...sober...and safely...There are no roads to follow, and no speed limits..

Especially if you are out with 15 people on board your boat....and if any are visibly not wearing life preservers. You're just asking for an inspection. Sorry, but I am not buying that Ced was targeted just for being famous. All this could have been easily avoided merely by following the rules for boating.

They probably did a blood test (I hope) to confirm he was intoxicated, but cops have been known to overexaggerate field sobriety tests also. I read a study in one of my classes where they took 10 cops and had them do field sobriety tests on 10 random subjects, not knowing who was drunk and who wasnt. At the end, the results showed that the police found 6 of the 10 subjects to be under the influence based on the field sobriety tests. NONE of the subjects were drunk, or had a drop of alcohol in their systems for that matter.

Game set, and match.

A female passenger on Cedric Benson's boat Saturday night in Austin, Texas, was concerned enough about his safety after police took him into custody to phone her parents and urge them to call 911, the Tribune has learned.

"I called my dad and told him, 'Call 911, my black friend is getting beaten up by police on Lake Travis,' " said Elizabeth Cartwright, 22, a friend of Benson's from the University of Texas. "It's more what I heard than what I saw. I have never heard or seen Cedric that scared."

Cartwright, an English major at the University of Texas who is to graduate later this month, estimated she and her fiance had been boating with Benson six times this spring and each time a Lower Colorado River Authority boat pulled them over for a safety check.

There were about 15 people on the boat, including Benson's mother, Jackie, who had spent much of the evening swimming in a part of the lake known as Devil's Cove. Just when the group had decided to head back to shore around 9:30 p.m. and go out to dinner, a patrol boat stopped to conduct a random check.

According to Cartwright, she had consumed one beer and Benson had two drinks.

"I know Cedric and I don't think he was drunk," Cartwright said.

The arrival of LCRA police perturbed Benson because of the frequency of the checks on his 30-foot boat, Cartwright said.

When Benson's boat passed the safety inspection, Cartwright said she and her fiance were surprised the officer then required a sobriety test for Benson.

"We were all like, 'Why?' " she said.

After an officer led Benson to the LCRA boat for the test, the second officer left behind on Benson's boat assured a nervous Jackie Benson that her son would be fine, Cartwright recalled.

A few minutes later, Cartwright said she heard Benson begin to scream after the officer pepper-sprayed him in the eye. By the time Benson was in handcuffs, he was screaming, "Please stop, Mom, make them please stop."

Cartwright disputed that Benson was resisting arrest.

Panicked, Cartwright called her father, Jeff, to give him a description of the physical way she saw her friend being treated and told him to call 911.

Unaware the friend in question was Benson, Jeff Cartwright called 911 and told the dispatcher that police "were beating up a black kid on Lake Travis."

If you have a phone, why would you call your parents and tell them to call 911. Why not just do it yourself.

Benson is just another one of those lazy overated NFL players. Ones who were drafted way too high and now that they have a load a money they have no motivation to actually become a good NFL player.

Yeah. Times have certainly changed. It is a huge waste of time to have Benson take a couple of puffs into a breathalyzer to determine with 99.9% accuracy whether or not he was drunk a BETTER idea would be to administer a field sobriety test that way regardless of how the test goes I can claim he was drunk and arrest a famous person. Yup, times have certainly changed.

oh Lord, the female friend that doesn't know the number for the police surely has more credibility with the "2 drink defense" than the cops...

Not saying he's guilty, but let's lay off the "cops are out to get a scalp" defense. Longhorn RBs ain't that big a haul, no?

Rumor was, back then, that he was actually looking for an incriminating "private" tape, not a plasma TV. ;)

The girl's story just doesn't make much sense at all. Besides the fact that she didn't just call 911 herself, why the heck would she call her parents and just say that "my black friend" is getting beaten up. Not Cedric Benson, local football legend is getting beaten up. Nope, just "my black friend."

Six times out. Six times "inspected." I'll say it again. I have not had my boat or the boat I was on "randomly inspected" in over 15 years boating on lake Travis and lake Austin.

The girl's story just doesn't make much sense at all. Besides the fact that she didn't just call 911 herself, why the heck would she call her parents and just say that "my black friend" is getting beaten up. Not Cedric Benson, local football legend is getting beaten up. Nope, just "my black friend."

Another witness, this time a person NOT on Benson's boat, claims the police were out of line. "They ended up -- I don't know why -- but laid him on his back, I heard him say, 'Please don't pepper-spray me, please don't pepper-spray me,'" Patch said, according to the report. "It was uncalled for, it was ludicrous, no point for it."As they were taking him up the dock, they stopped. He said, 'I am fine, I can continue walking,' and they put their legs behind his knees and knocked him over his knees and started hog-carrying him

Again. Why did the police not administer a breathalyzer test on the boat I really doubt there wasn't one available.

How exactly do you administer a field sobriety test on a boat on water anyways? "Please hold your arms out perpendicular to your body, disregard the waves splashing the boat around, and walk in a straight line." No wonder he failed the test. Did they follow up with a field sobriety test on land and, if so, how long did they wait for Benson to lose his "sea legs" before trying to get him to walk on a straight line? Everyone knows you are a bit wobbly after being used to rocking around on a boat all day long.
