View Full Version : Thoughts on BCS and UT being #1

I was bored and thinking about the BCS.
My take on BCS and Texas being 1:
UT is a great football team, juggernaut even, as is USC. Here are the facts: USC is top-ranked in The Associated Press media poll, the USA Today coaches' poll and the Harris Interactive poll. The coaches' poll and the Harris poll make up two-thirds of a team's BCS grade.
What does this mean you ask yourself... It means that a computer, that's right, a damned COMPUTER ousted USC from their number one standing. I know, I know, UT blows everyone out of the water offensively and have a stellar D, in fact Vince Young is still my Heisman pick. But honestly, do you all really think that a COMPUTER has any place in football? There needs to be a college football playoff, but I'm not standing on that soapbox right now. In every other sport the champion is on top until another team says otherwise, by saying otherwise I mean beating the champion, I believe it is unfair for a computer to strip a team of it's number one ranking when they haven't lost a game. Football, and it's rankings are supposed to be won and lost on the field, not by a couple of computer science nerds.
I love UT and want them to win it all but they are not #1.

I am no UT fan, however the BCS has it right as long as these two teams are 1-2, it does not matter which order, cause that will be decided at the Rose Bowl. If these two teams remained undefeated which I think they will, then they will meet in Pasadena and that is all that matters.

That is not necessarilly true because the many of the human voters put Texas number 1. If they had not moved Texas up to number one they would not be number one in the BCS no matter what the computers said.

The humans still have USC number one in the AP and CP.

yes but Texas has a few first place votes. That is what is used to determine your BCS ranking

Texas has played more top 10 teams than USC so far this season so they should be #1 for now... Texas has the easiest schedule of the top 10 teams from here on out... when USC and VaTech start playing their tough teams, UT will get jumped by USC, and the gap between UT and VaTech will close dramatically. The BCS experts say the gap between 2 and 3 is too big for UT to get jumped by VaTech, but you never know what those computer are going to say if VaTech stays undefeated.

If I had faith in macks abilities to do anything it's in screwing a good thing up......this looks like an impossible taks....but ya gotta beeeeelieeeeeeveeeeeeee ;)
Problem is the players will probably find an excuse to send mack back to the locker room and win the game while he's gone....

Jeez, I hate the Longhorns but Headshrinker is getting a little crazy with the smack talk towards Mack Brown. I don't think he is the best coach in the game, that honor should go to Pete Carrol, but the man is a dang fine football coach. However, since he hasn't won the NC at Texas in the 7 (8?) years that he has been there, that makes him a choker, a master at folding.
I don't know where to begin. First of all, he has been at Texas for only 7 or 8 years. Virtually everyone will agree that while he coached at UNC, he had no real shot at winning a NC with that program, that is why he left. It would be like expecting a NC from Oklahoma State, what he did there was a miracle. He took over a UT team that had not even sniffed at a NC in about a decade, and has taken it into perennial top ten land. The main thing knock against him-- He was unable to beat an Oklahoma juggernaut that won 1 NC, and played in 3 NC games over the span of 5 years.
Here are some college coaches that had to wait longer than 7 or 8 years for their first NC:
Bobby Bowden
Joe Paterno
Tom Osbourne
Steve Spurrier
Here is one that has YET to win a NC:
Frank Beamer
THEY SUCK!! CHOKERS!! CAN"T WIN THE BIG ONE!!!
Maybe Mack Brown choked in the Rose Bowl last year. Or against Ohio State earlier this year.
Folks like Headshrinker obviously do not really pay attention to the game. People who do know exactly how difficult a NC is to come by, it is something that is treasured and fought for, often over a lifetime. Only the worst kind of fan is calling for a coach's head after failure to deliver a NC in 7 years.

Guess what dude. They called all the coaches you mentioned chokers until they finally won. Did you hear what Bowden said when he got the first one. "Finally that is off my back." If they can call those guys chokers you should not be upset if the same is said about Mack. I mean before he beat OU people on this very board said the same thing!!

The "they" you refer to are people just like Headshrinker and yourself. Idiot, impatient, ungrateful fans. It didn't change the fact that all of those men were fine, fine ball coaches, even before they won the NC.
And of course Bowden was thrilled to have gotten that off his back, every coach in the country wants to end his career with at least one NC. Still, most won't.
Just ask the people who know the game better than anyone on a messge board-- the other coaches. I guarantee they weren't calling Bowden, Osbourne et. al. chokers, even before the first NC.
I can't stand Johnny come lately's who have no memory past 5 seconds ago. Who can't remember that JoPa and Bowden BUILT PSU and FSU football, from almost nothing. Who can't remember what Jon Mackovic had done to the Longhorns before Brown had arrived. It is sickening to watch people run down men who have not accomplished in 7 years something that most other people in their career will spend a lifetime, chasing, and still come up short. Just to get your team in the hunt is the sign of a quality coach.

I didn't say that people who said that were correct what I said was they did say it. I did however say that about Mack just to antagonize certain people. As far as me being like "Headshrinker" I don't think so. I have NEVER been nor will I ever be a UT fan for that matter I'm not even a BIGXII fan. Being that is the case I can bash without remorse. :D
