Los Barrios is da bomb. And I will say that the original is better than the fancy one out on Redland.

Nachos Butler to start, and then the Enchilades Mexicanas. Mmmmmmm.

Also, the place may be a little different these next few days. The owner was killed last week. Anybody who went there, knew her. She would come around and talk to everybody. Her son, and daugther in law would also make the rounds.

RIP Ms. Barrios

Most of the ones people have named are okay, over priced but okay. And few good ones are Casa Del Sol on Fredricksburg road, and The Blanco Cafe on Blanco and also on Fredricksburg Rd. I also know a few Mom and Pop type in Kirby and on O'Connor that are good.

For a non-San Antonian, I like Blanco Cafe. We can't get a good Mexi-breakfast up here..wish we had something half as good as Blanco Cafe.

My favorites are:

1. La Margerita..or is it Margarita?:notworthy

2. Mi Tierra

I had heard the stories and all the talk about "Mi Tierra" way back when i was a sophomore (1978) in high school. I finally went to SA a few years after i graduated and that was the first place i ate when i got there. It was well worth the wait.

I went back in the early 90's and asked around about the best place to eat Mexican food and was overwhelmed with responses to "La Margarita"..so i went and tried it. I've been to a tone of mexican food places but THAT had to be the best! The plate was Huge as was the serving, and the taste was like none other. That place will be my Numero Uno until someone can convince me otherwise.

Yah, Mi Tierra is a tourist trap. I went there maybe like once or twice the entire time I lived in SA (4 years). The hole-in-da-wall places outside of downtown SA are a lot better.

I forgot about La Fogata!

Rolando's SuperTaco on Hildebrand and Blanco is another good one.

Yea, they have one off of Walzem that we go to sometimes. The hole in da wall place we go to every Sunday is in Kirby it is called Blanca's cafe, great food and cheap. We walk out paying about $20 for 4 people which I think is excellent compared to other places for breakfast and you are paying $30 +

I haven't been in quite a while. What has turned it into a tourist trap?..Rage..J-Rock Mom?

Rolando's has the best "tacos" (Actually bigger than burritos if I recall). Get the Guivi taco.

Mi Tierra is okay, but you WILL run into Tourists there, just like Casa Rio. But Mi Tierra has the bakery para empanadas!

What about Pico De Gallo, is that still there by across the Highway from Mi Tierra? They had KILLER Margaritas.

There are a lot of tourists there because its downtown.....plus, I didn't think the food was that great...maybe I'm spoiled by the good stuff I know outside of downtown SA. :D....and its really overpriced just because its downtown and tourist will pay those prices.

I was SV, before SV was "cool".

I did a lot of my growing up, Down on Blanco, just North of Fresno.

I know this is pretty sterile Mexican Food, but Alamo Cafe makes a REAL good salsa, queso, and tortillas. There is one on I-10 at Wurzbach, and 281 just North of Bitters.

But they DO make good tortillas, salsa, and queso! AND, they are almost as touristy, as the places downtown!

I like their CFS as well.

Not like Tip Tops CFS though.

As a "tourist", I like the downtown places- Casa Rio- the original riverwalk resteraunt, Mi Tierra is where we always eat breakfast- I didn't think it was as good for lunch or dinner; there are probably hundreds of good Mexican places- it is San Antonio, after all- you could probably eat at one a day and still not eat at all the Tex-Mex or Mexican places in the SA area.:puke

Sometimes they have a special for either a steak and eggs or a pork chop with eggs, comes with potatos, tortillas, beans and your drink for $4.50. The tacos run about $1.?? each.

The best way to get Mexican food in SA is to take I-37 out of town south to Corpus Christi, switch onto 77 south, and drive until palm trees start to line the road. Then stop at the first place that strikes your fancy, and it'll be all good.

Los Barrios - good food
Mi Tierra, Pico de Gallo, La Margarita - all owned by the same family, all tourist traps, over priced, marginal food.

Mamacitas - junk

Chachos(on Callaghan) - good food

La Fogata - overpriced, poor service

El Chilaquil( on Commerce downtown) - Huaraches, Sopes, carnitas - good food

Rosarios( Southtown) - good food

Los Generales( Nacogdoches, south of 1604) - good food, large bowl of excellant menudo for $5

Panchitos( off of Hildebrand and McCullogh) - good food

Yes, Mi Tierra is a "TOURISTY" kind of place, but so is The Cadillac Bar in Nuevo Laredo, Ma Crosbys in Acuna, La Cucharacha in Reynosa or Blanca Whites in Matamores. So I missed your POINT. Anyway all of these are FUN and Festive. And the Bakery at Mi Tierra is decent. If you want AUTHENTIC look for a place with Taqueria in the name. If you want good food in San Antonio, here are a few others besides the ones mentioned earlier in my other post;

1. Cielito Lindo

2. Aldacos

3. Marthas

4. El Mirador

5. Acenar

6. Chino Latino

7. El Pino

Enjoy :)

BUT

Mi Tierras is good every now and then.

By Judson there is El Sabrasitos which is alright but not too great. I have only had breakfast there...i like Judson Cafe more for breakfast tacos, cheaper than Sabs

Camino Ranch is a "Steak-Mex" restaurant. I can't really describe it but a lot of people say they have the best Fajitas. I won't go there cuz i used to work there, but the Fajitas ARE delicious.

There is a place in the Forum...can't remember the dang name...ummm...hmmm. i'll get back atcha. not too good but it's alright. I don't have good taste. If it has fruit or veggies i won't like it.

I saw a couple of mentions of Los Barrios (sp ??) -- I had the chance to visit there a couple of years back (or maybe 3), and I have to tell you it was the best I have had. IMHO there are only 2-3 in DFW (where I live) that rival what I had at LB in San Antonio -- and if I were forced to rate them the best 2 or 3 here would not beat out LB for the best. It was a great setting with all of the families and most of the customers seemed to be regulars.

There's Mexican Food in San Antonio!?!?!

Without me reading throught the whole thread....what is the name of the restaurant that is downtown across the street from a hotel? I can't recall the names even though I ate there and stayed in the hotel. That food was pretty O.K.

In Houston if you want good Mexican or 'Tex-Mex' cuisine you have to look for the dives. Most of the big name restaurants suck.

I haven't been there in a while but Tomatillo's was pretty good last time I was there - it's on Broadway. I used to go to Marthas on 281 but their food has gone downhill. Recently we discovered Amorcitos on 1604 which is brand new - pretty good food.
