If anyone is watching sc right now....there was a story about the oklahoma state qb... that was talked badly about in the newspaper....and the coach defended him. The qb just talked about his coach not sounding "sincere" about defending him??? THE COACH DIDNT HAVE TO DEFEND YOU!!!!!!! AND YOUR WHINING ABOUT IT???? ON SPORTSCENTER??????? THIS PISSES ME OFF>.....he got benched because there was a better qb.....and hes crying because he got benched.....I needed to vent this....anyway...its relevent because now apparently he quit the team beacause of all of this and is now coaching at his Houston HS???\
anybody agree with this????? and if anybody knows him tell him this....
GROW UP.....you got benched because there was somebody better....dont cry about it...the fact that you quit lets me know that your selfish and you dont care enough to support your team..... hope you find peace in that decision

I haven't seen SC yet tonight, but I know that was QB Bobby Reid outta North Shore.
Maybe some of our NS posters could shed a little light on this situation?

I read an article about him awhile ago. In it he stated he has never gotten so much ridicule as he got after Gundy said what he said. Long involved but boiled down to he thought Coaches at Okie lite lost all confidence in him. He had quit football completely till he got the call from TSU
Unfortunately BR will be tied to his X coaches stupid youtube specticle. Best of luck to him @ TSU.

this was on a few weeks ago.
he's not coaching at NS, he had one year of eligibility left and is QBing at TSU. he had originally declared for the draft before the TSU coach talked to him. He's complaining because after he was injured, the coaches never gave him a chance to get his starting job back after he recovered. i dont blame him for leaving Okie state but i dont think there was a need to make it national news

Hey Dude from Southlake,
You can stay pissed off all year if you want. You don't know what you are talking about. Why don't you do a little research before you start your rant. Gundy did not handle the situation like a head coach should. He embarrassed himself and his player. Maybe Reid was not the best QB and that is fine, but it did not have to become a national spectacle. I believe Gundy is way over his "head" as a head coach. He will be gone before to long. By the way Bobby Reid got his degree from Okie State. He enrolled early by graduating from NorthShore in Dec.2003. Right after he led them to a state championship. He is a good student and a nice kid, and pretty darn good QB. Would have probably done better at LSU or Ohio State were he also recieved offers. I say good luck to him.

One other angle on that Gundy/Reid situation, Gundy was not the head coach when Bobby was recruited by Okie State. That was Les Miles. He left for LSU in Bobbys first year there. That is never a good thing for the recruit. Gundy was on the staff , but Miles came to NorthShore himself to get Bobby and then left for LSU, which I believe had also recruited Reid. I think Reid was man enough to accept his demotion, but the fact he was coming off an injury and the fact that Gundy made a fool of himself on national TV had to embarass the hell out of a good football player. If Bobby had played at SouthLake y'all would still be talking about him. He was a very good QB and probably would have done better in a different program. I hope he sets a single season record for TSU. He will be working on his Masters degee there, having completed his undergraduate courses at Okie State.

Gundy was right. Reid just wasn't suited for the offense they wanted to run and they had a kid on the roster who was, so they played him. Maybe Gundy could have handled it a little better, but Reid's demotion was justified. I have no problem's with the rant either and I did think Reid came across as a little whiny by complaining about it. All Gundy said in his rant is that Reid is an excellent student a good young man who just doesn't have a place on the starting depth chart. He was right in being pissed at the reporter. He probably could have handled that differently, but for Bobby Reid to say on national TV that he though his "life was over" because he lost the starting QB job at Okie Lite shows a bright kid with no sense of perspective or grasp on reality.

This is a few weeks old, but they have replayed it a few times in the past couple days. Seeing as I go to OSU, I have followed this whole fiasco from day one. I believe that Gundy blew up for a few reasons ( and I fully believe that it was no fake and Gundy trying to get attention)! The Daily Oklahoman ( the news paper that published the article) is one of the worst written, most bias news papers anywhere. Constantly bashing every move OSU does, Jenni Carlson decided to fabricate a story that was totally untrue. Gundy responded from his heart/emotion and stood up for Reid. He deserved to be benched because Zac was and is the better QB, at least in the offense that we run at OSU. This SC story is just Reid being pissed off because he lost his starting stop to a player that handles pressure better than he did.

Gundy is not a top flight coach and won't be there long. Wait and see. He let the pressure get to him and made an *** out of himself. You okie fans probably don't see it that way. But I never saw Frank Broyles, Darrell Royal, Bear Bryant, etc. throw such a childish tantrum on national TV. "I'm forty.I'm a MAN!" That's crap in my opinion and I played college baseball for some mean old coaches. Gundy is over his head.

Its hard to think he is going to be gone soon since...
He just got a raise
He got a contract extension a few months ago
My main man Boone likes him

T Boone has enough money to pay the salary of every D1 head coach in the nation and not bat an eye. Let Gundy have a couple of losing seasons and see what that contract extension means. But he's a man, he's forty... he'll get over it.

He's not "my boy". He's 22, he's a man. Gundy would look like an a$$ whether I cared about Bobby Reid or not. It's not about him sitting the bench. It's about the steroid rage of your head coach. He's a knucklehead. I never had a coach do that. Hell there was an auto dealership up here in Nashville that was saying"Buy a car from me, I'm a man, I'm forty." He could have taken that reporter in a back room and said whatever he wanted. But he grandstanded in front of the cameras and it didn't look good outside the state of Oklahoma. Not the classiest way to handle the deal.

You had a BS "journalist" call you out, one things that weren't true?!?!?!
What Gundy did was stand up for someone who was sad/upset/mad that he got benched after he thought he was the starter. I don't know why 6+ months later Bobby had to get his 2nd 15 minutes of fame, he should move on, he has a new team, I hope he is a stud there!

My issue with the reporter is that she did not cite her sources. My issue with Gundy is making Bobby Reid part of a national joke punchline. It was Gundy's right to bench Reid. That is what a coach has to do, if it's right for the team. But Darrell Royal, Lou Holtz, Joe Paterno would NOT have thrown that rant. I would be embarrassed of my coach for that, not proud of him. A coach does not have to make a scene to have a players back. I have had ex-coaches have my back by writing a letter or making a phone call in my behave. Not screaming"I'm a man, I'm forty." By the way being forty is not the only requirement for manhood. Just my opinion, but I think he's a jerk.

Fair enough. Just FYI, the reporter wasn't even at the game she claims his mother was feeding him chicket, yet, she wrote about it. I guess we agree to disagree about what Gundy did.
Oh ya, and I don't put Gundy up there with the coaching legends you spoke of, not yet anyway ;)

I don't know about that... Katy had an excellent team... and thats beside the point. Bobby is classless and selfish... Southlake has 2 qb's right now in chase wasson and Greg Mcelroy that have been in less than starting jobs....they aren't crying about it... they arent pouting to the media... they simply know that there is somebody better... but they stay on the team to support their teammates.... according to the way this reid acts.... Coach dodge wouldnt put him in anyway one more ring...... he would have been the reason we lost...

i don't think we can assume anything about whether reid would have played better or worse at slc, based on what he did at ns. he was a fine hs qb, and imo, had he been here and cd there, the results for each team would have been the same.

you two can sure jump to conclusions. i bet you'd both score pretty high in the state meet next week. i would like to think you'd have the same desire to see the stangs win whether fireaway was involved or not. i guess down south a five point win constitutes a pounding. i know we are hoping for a great game, and expect to be tested, regardless of the score.

Fireaway has never met Reid. Only knows what he reads or sees on TV. I was around the kid for three years. I am related to a NorthShore coach, I have met his dad. I know more about him than any person on this website unless NorthShore coaches come here. Fireaway has an opinion that is based on very little info and to call Bobby classless and selfish is ignorant. Plain and simple. Gundy has less class than Bobby does. And he probably isn't as smart as Bobby either. I will have my own little celebration the day he gets run out of Stillwater.

I think you enjoy stirring stuff up. I maybe a jerk and have little class, but I always have a friends back. Does Bobby Reid's state championship ring have less value than a Southlake ring?-he got us there. Did Bobby get his degree from OK St.?- yes.Is he working on his next degree?-yes.
Was he coached better at NorthShore than at OK St.?-maybe. Is Gundy a first time college head coach with an anger issue? yes and maybe. I know Bobby and he is neither selfish nor classless, as fireaway puts it.

After Bobby got benched, he left the team and didn't practice for two days. To me it sounds like he was just being a sore looser to the starting QB spot! I this this SC video was just Bobby trying to get back at Gundy for doing so.

Gundy's rant made the top5 all time rants on USA Today website. Bobby was embarrassed by that and I would have been too. You OkieStaters will never see it that way, but there are plenty of people that do. And a lot of them are coaches. I hope Bobby does well in the NFL, I'm not sure he will, but if he does, more power to him! He played well for us... 2 seasons ago. I recall Mack Brown and Stoops standing up for Gundy after his rant...I bet other coaches would love to have done the same, just don't have the balls to do so.
"Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops defended Gundy during Monday's teleconference, and said he agreed with the coach's assessment of the media.

Im sorry you're taking this so personal.... i thought i made it obvious when i said in my first post that this was what I THOUGHT... and don't call me ignorant... I've done my share of homework on the subject. And you're making it sound like this is all Gundy's fault? He was defending his player because the writer criticized his character... AND AGAIN... Bobby Reid said he didnt feel like Gundy's rant was "genuine" ... he didnt say that he was embarrassed. This is where my argument comes in. Gundy was saying that you shouldn't criticize Reid because of his character...hes a good kid... he got benched because there is a better player who last year had the record for touchdowns last year. Reid, making this video, shows me that he takes it personally that Gundy benched him...calling it unfair. I don't even think you know what you're talking about... and frankly i don't care what you think... welcome to an opinion forum....goof ball
You sir, hit the nail on the head! Thank you.

"The problem with us is these are - regardless of what anyone wants to say - student athletes," Stoops said. "They're not professional players. They're just playing for their school, trying to do a good job.""
Stoops saying his players aren't professional... Now that's comedy gold!
quit covering for these guys. They are men in the eyes of the law and should be grown enough to stand up for themselves. Acting like the players are just kids or some kind of victim is a cop-out!

It is Gundy's fault. He had total control of the situation before the rant. He has final say so on who plays. He could have called the President of the University and the A. D. in on a PRIVATE meeting with the NEWSPAPER and gotten Jenni fired. He could have done a lot of things differently. But after the RANT it was in every newspaper. On every sports channel. And HE was no longer in control of something that started out in a piss ant newspaper that nobody read anyway and it became a national spectacle.
And that is the point I"M making. It was an embarassment to a lot of people that KNEW Bobby and to Bobby himself. The rant not the benching. And the article would have died off in a week or two. Nobody but Okie State fans cared about the first article. That's why I think Gundy is a low class grandstander and I would tell it to him face to face. Firebird you don't know shtt from shinola.

He still has total control of the situation, he has his job, and a starting QB. The Oklahoman wasn't going to fire Jenni, they are stupid people at that newspaper. How did it embarrass people? Someone standing up, complimenting a young man now embarrasses people? I surely wouldn't be embarrassed.

I guess he wanted the right to have his say. Gundy got to have his over and over and over on U-Tube. There is a car commercial up here that say"Buy a car from me, I'm a man,I'm forty." Gundy's rant made the top5 all time rants on USA Today website. Bobby was embarrassed by that and I would have been too. You OkieStaters will never see it that way, but there are plenty of people that do. And a lot of them are coaches. I hope Bobby gets drafted next year and becomes an NFL QB that wasn't good enough to play at Okie State his senior year. I played baseball for Brett Favre's dad back in Mississippi and when the Falcons drafted him(Brett), the "genius" Jerry Glanville thought he was a bust and traded him his first year. We all know how that turned out.
Do you want some sort of medal or ribbon? You've mentioned that you played baseball in just about every response, relevant or not. And what the hell does Brett Favre being traded to the Packers have to do with Bobby Reid?
I also love your two-faced argument style. You call out fireaway because he expressed his opinion on Bobby Reid without personally knowing him, and then you continue blasting away at Mike Gundy calling him a grandstander, saying he embarassed Reid, and calling the coaching he received at Northshore better than Ok State.
You then proceed to insult Southlake Carroll, and bring up all the games they've lost. You said it's too bad they didn't have Bobby Reid instead of their Heisman finalist quarterback.
I don't personally know Bobby Reid, and I never played college baseball, but what I do know is that Reid is a good kid. He kept his commitment to OSU even when more prestigious football colleges came knocking, he enrolled early, and he got his degree. He seems very well spoken and intelligent. I also know that every one of these things was espoused by Mike Gundy in his speech. He came after the writer of the article talking about how Bobby Reid never did anything but the right things, and defended him when no one else would. However, he also has a responsibility to the university and the football team, and that is to win games. He made the decision to put in the better quarterback for their system. I hope Bobby makes the most out of his second chance and does well for himself, and that this whole situation gets resolved in the best way possible. Please stop making more of the situation than there is. Mike Gundy is not some life-ruining grandstander like you make him out to be. He did what he thought best for someone he honestly cared about, it wasn't malignant at all.

Chase Daniels was not the starting QB at Southlake in 2003. He did not start for then until 2004. Reid led NS to state in 2003. And won.

The point about Favre is that talent gets evaluated wrong every year. Glanville was obviously wrong about Favre and I hope history will prove Gundy wrong about Bobby's talent.

My mistake, I should probably update my journal chronicling the trials and tribulations of all of SLC's players. I know Bobby Reid is a good player, and I don't think you'll find anyone here who has or will claim otherwise, but why do you continue with bashing Mike Gundy? Your personal and unmerited attacks have no place here.

He wasn't wrong about his talent though. He loved Reid and recruited him as he was the quarterbacks coach at OSU when Reid was recruited. When they moved to a different system, Robinson was the better fit. There wasn't any doubt about that because he played better and had much more experience in that type of system. That's not to say Gundy thought Reid was any less talented.

I just looked up Chases website and he did start at QB in 2003 and 2004. My mistake. They've had so many good QB's there I thought Chase was a reciever there in 2003. But he was the QB. I was not trying to insult Chase, I was trying to make a point about Bobby. But I am glad South Lake got beat by the Florida team and I hope NorthShore beats em too. Nothing wrong with rooting for who you want. Hell I rooted against Katy when they played Madison and Vince Young. But I root for Katy when they play SA and Dallas teams. And if South Lake ever plays Lonny's beloved Converse, I will pull for South Lake.

Oh. My. God. I just agreed with a Sooner ;) But really, you make some good points BoomerSooner.
When Gundy lashed out at Jenni, he did not do it to spite Reid, he did it to defend a player, a friend, and a member of his family. I fully believe that Bobby gave his all when playing, up until the point he went MIA for two days, and from there it only went down hill.
The point about Favre is that talent gets evaluated wrong every year. Glanville was obviously wrong about Favre and I hope history will prove Gundy wrong about Bobby's talent.
Talent had NOTHING to do with why Gundy STOOD UP for Reid. I hope Gundy was wrong too and Bobby kicks *** at his new school, I really do. I just wish he didn't whine about being benched on SC.

EXACTLY....i was never criticizing Reid's ability as a player...as i always say...if you are ever starting in college you have talent... I was criticizing his attitude... as i do T.O. when i know he is an awesome receiver...but when he makes a mess about not having the ball thrown to him... or the coach making a "stupid call" these are the situations that disappoint me

Coach gundy's rant made the top5 on USA Today.com. I bet as he gets older he will hope to be remembered for something besides that. He could have STOOD UP for Bobby in so many other, better ways. That is my point about that. And if Bobby gets drafted and plays in the NFL, which at this point probably won't happen, but if it does, then he was not good enough to play for Gundy, but he was good enough for the NFL. That is my point about talent. I wish he had never set foot in Oklahoma. I bet he does too. At least he got a paid for education.

I'm not taking his benching personally, I probably am taking the criticism Bobby is getting personally. I know him. If you did you might feel differently. I don't see how you can know what Gundy thinks.
I don't give two craps about Gundy. I do care about Bobby.
I will say this: the only people that know the whole story are Bobby and Gundy.

I don't blame Gundy, I just don't think he is a top shelf coach. He should have handled the situation differently. And for all the arm chair experts and holier than thou's, cut a good kid some slack. I should have never mentioned SouthLake.. I was wrong to do that. We will see you in November.

after getting some good laughs out of the arguments of this thread, i've decided to throw in my two cents.
in the case of gundy, i do think his rant was sincere and he had every right to stand up in a way that no other coaches ever have...and he didn't react like a "roided up 17 year old". of course i'm going to say that and be biased being a student, but judging by the way he was backed nationally it seems out of line for bobby to come out and say he was embarassed so long after the whole thing happened. besides, gundy could have just been a little worked up after that stressful tech game.
but don't get all upset yet, because i'm not "attacking" bobby like some seem to feel gundy did. i've seen bobby out around stillwater and talked to him a couple of times, and just talking to him shortly i can tell he is a good guy and should have a bright future. he is a great athlete, as was noticed when we tried him out at receiver a few times, and was a great recruit for us a few years ago.
as for the article that was on ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3341578) a few weeks ago about this situation, it seems like people are making it into a huge deal that bobby lost his starting spot, even though it happens all the time in major D1 football. zac earned the right to at least have a shot at starting, and he shined, and ended up setting some records last season...which is the biggest reason why i think it's a bit ridiculous people think bobby should have been the starter and that he is so much more amazing than zac.

That may be true, but I think Gundy responded instinctively when someone openly criticized someone he truly cared about. He got overzealous and made a fool of himself, but I think he was sincere. I honestly believe that he had Reids best interest at heart.
