View Full Version : Most D1 Players From Single HS Class

What are the most players from a single high school class to go to a division 1 university to play in a single year? I know SV averages around 2-3 per year (+ 1). Throw them out there so we can see who has the biggest talent pool.

It seems that Mesquite may have had the record or close to it, on the 03 championship team. Maybe 8-10 players went DI.

Lufkin has been averaging 4-7 div1a players for the last several years. They are always in the top 5 lately when it comes to div1a recruits. Not talking div1aa that is a totally different league. The most they ever had was 7 in 2003 but this team and the next has a good chance to pass that mark. I have heard the Dallas Carter team of 88 had the most ever but i do not know if that is true. I think it was 15 to 17??

According to my Dave Campbell's mag from 1997...Dallas Carter had 23 players sign college scholarships from their 1996 squad. Not sure how many of those were D1 but that's impressive.

I know Berkner has been getting around 5 - 7 players a year going to D-1. This year they should get around 10.

how long has this talent pool been active? it is severely unimpressive to think that berk has that much talent and so little to show for it for the last 30+ years, as far as football success.

That was actually true. Carter's Class of 89 had a huge scholarship class as stated, and Carter's Class of 92 had 21 football scholarships, 18 I know were D1 (3- Tx Tech,1 -A&M, 1 OU, 1 LSU, 1 Notre Dame, 2 Arkansas, 1 Boston College, 1 New Mexico Sate, 1 Vanderbilt, 1 Kansas, 1 TX Southern, 2 Alcorn State, 2 East Texas State) and the rest were to Hardin-Simmons(not sure about their division).

Some of these players left, flunked or were kicked out of their college programs. I do not know if all of these kids graduated together, but they played on the 1995 LCHS squad! ( I think 5 or 6 were, either sophmore or juniors.)
Got a chance to see this squad, while I was playing Pro ball....they were quite an athletic talent!

In 90' Arlington Lamar had a huge line and Shawn Walters(USC, Rams).
In 91' We lost to Waco, they were a very talented team also.

I remember watching the game on TV and I also beleive that their slowest kid on defense ran a 4.6 (D-lineman about 220 lbs)! Somebody jump in here if this is wrong!

I'm pretty sure they had an ineligible player. I'm not sure that I got the correct year, but I remember they whooped a damn good CJ team in the final! I also think that Jesse Armstead was the leader of that Carter defense! He was all MAN in HS and dominated every offense that they faced.

Jessie Armstead was ALL-American his sophmore year!! At that time he was the only player the be selected as All-American 3 years in high school.
Derrick Evans was also All-American, his jr and sr year.

Not many people know it took a final minute minor miracle comeback for Carter to beat Marshall that year in 88. Marshall won the div1 final in 90. They had some great teams back then. Marshall is now in 4a and played in the div1 4a finals last year and lost Ennis by 1 point. Longview destroys them yearly now and Lufkin quit playing them in 2004 because they went to 4a and the et district broke up. Lufkin lost to that 88 carter team in the playoffs 31-7, but the movie Friday night light's said they lost like 70-0?? LOL

CCBOY,
Hill didn't actually play with the state team at Carter. In 88' he was going to a private school( Bishop Dunne). Nevertheless, Dunne won back to back state titles while he was there (87-88), then he transferred back to Carter in 89.

Wow All These Schools Having This Much D1 Talent And Not Winning A State Champioship Or Being In It Every Year. Why Aren't They Winning It All With This Much Talent? It takes more that just talent to win. Talent is with the individual. If it's not put together right or it's not working together, defeat is inevitable. It takes coaching and discipline and execution.

So you are telling me these aren't well coached teams, because the coach is responsible for the coaching, discipline, and the execution. I have been on a state championship staff. I have an idea on how to win a state championship. I believe we only had two sign D1 scholarships that year and believe they have transferred to D2 schools

This is possible because each team have 11 guys on the field at one time. Both sides are great and maybe one a slight advantage. One teams tradition can be so strong that D1 universities offer these guys scholarships (even the back-ups). These big time universities like Florida St, Texas, Oklahoma, and USC, gets these guys that were already great players in highschool and make them into NFL products. These colleges have bigger influences as far as the mental, physical, and social aspect. We must remember that the Carter 89 team was unable to play in the playoffs because of a coaches call to the field when he was suppose to sit out a game and they had just as much talent as the 88 team. It could have been a state year for them.

The 1980 graduating class at Baytown Lee (79 season), who beat #1 La Porte in regionals and were State Quarterfinalist that year had this many receive scholarships from each of these schools:
UH - 1
Baylor - 2
Texas Tech - 1
Sam Houston State - 2
Sul Ross - 1
UTEP - 1
Texas A&M - 1
Rice - 1
That was 6 SWC scholarships.

I'm not sure how many of those got to go D1 because I think several had grade issues on the SAT/ACT exams and could'nt play because of that. I know Baylor had signed a couple of those and never saw them because they didn't qualify. If anyone has anymore information on this I'd welcome it.

Don't get me wrong, the coaching staff was great. But a good coach can call the wrong play or defensive set, or the team may not execute the right play in the course of a game and can cause things to go south and cause a team to lose at the end of the day even to a team with less talent.

I don't have a percentage of them that went D1, but most of them went to D1 programs and passed their test. I followed them all the time throughout college. I remember a few that didn't pass the test, but in most situations where there are that many signees, you'll have a few in the bunch that can't make it. Both guys that went to prison passed their test and was supposed to go to Tennessee and Houston. Years later one of them was released and played for Texas Southern in Houston and did well.

It was 11div1a recruits and yes that Lamarque team was scary talened but i would not put them over Northshore 03 no way no how!! Lamarque was lucky to win state that year if you watched that game. They barely beat DR in ot when the DR kicker missed a easy field goal.
The top 3 teams at the end of the season in 2003 were!! I say end of the season because Lufkin was scary scary good that year and was #1 all year and beat 6 top 10 teams including Katy before they fell apart and the GIANT upset happened in the 1st round to Garland.
2003 best teams in my opinion
1. NS
2. Lamarque
3. Katy
4. SLC
5. Denton Ryan

They rigged the grades system before the year to basically pass every kid. In spite of it, they still had a kid barely fail. They had to fight every week in court and eventually forfeited the title for an ineligible player. It's the only forfeited title in Texas football history.

I'm pretty sure they had an ineligible player. I'm not sure that I got the correct year, but I remember they whooped a damn good CJ team in the final! I also think that Jesse Armstead was the leader of that Carter defense! He was all MAN in HS and dominated every offense that they faced.
I remember the Dallas Morning News had a picture of Jessie without his shirt on in the 1988 preview. Even in school, he was on his way to the pro's. Carter didn't look like the best team in the state most of the way through the playoffs, but they put the smackdown in the title game. Needless to say, I was watching and rooting for Judson (long before I moved to town).

Wow All These Schools Having This Much D1 Talent And Not Winning A State Champioship Or Being In It Every Year. Why Aren't They Winning It All With This Much Talent? I Think The Most Judson Has Ever Had Was Maybe 2 Or Three. Most Years It Is 0. I Do Know That One Sunday There Were Four Judson Kids In The Same Game At The Pro Level. That's Pretty Good To Have Four Kids From The Same High School Playing In The Same Pro Game.
It must be those great coaches like bubbacoach! ;)

LOL
Yeah, it took somebody from Judson to push them over the top! :p

Lonny I remember that pic. It was actually in another publication in Dallas at the time called the Dallas Times Herald. Several of his teachers in the school had the picture posted in their class. The picture was titled "Superman".

I forgot it was in the Herald. I have the last paper the Herald ever published. He's dead now, but a friend of me and my dad subscribed to the Herald and hated Skip Bayless, but would read him every day. Skip has moved, but is still just as bad! :D

don't even get me started on Bayless. Remember what Troy did though.

Those 13 D1-A players are probably less than the 88 team had.
I'll find out the exact numbers, but I think Class of 92 actually had more D1-A players than 89. It's just a few if it is more or less. 89' had quite a few D1-AA players in their 22 total scholarships.

If you did not want me to see or respond to your post you should have sent a PM. This is a public forum. You can make a case for Longview in the top 10 then do it. Don't try to attack me instead. Maybe you don't have any evidence and you just chose to attack me to mask that.
brother, if i attacked you, you would definitely know it!!! haven't even come close, YET!!! you have been making smart comments about Longview since you have darkened the door of this website...don't act like the 'wounded dog" in this scenario---doesn't work with people who actually have a brain...are you a girl by any chance??? if not, i'm really surprised??? funny thing is about this little 'spat' of ours is that i have NEVER made one negative comment about SLC, but you take every oppertunity to take a shot at us....what's the deal??? if other Longview posters have made negative comments about SLC, that's one thing, but don't group me in with those people...i'm not a homer, i give several teams their props and respect on this site everyday, always have.............

you are a homer. You think Longview is the best no matter what. The fact is Longview is not a top ten team in Texas in 2003. That is what I was arguing. Can I not argue about something that has nothing to do with my team?

being a homer is one thing which i am not!! are you listening??clean out your ears with a Q-tip, youngster!! i will come to Longview's aid whenever someone has something negative to say about them(if it's true, i will be the first to agree with it)..if that's being a "homer", then i guess i am.....again, i think we had a pretty good squad in 2003 and could have beaten LaMarque and DR(because i saw BOTH PLAY!!).. that's what i based my opinion on...did you get it that time, or do i need to say it a 3rd time....because i will!!!

Two of the D-1 signees of the great '88 Carter Team that went to Prison were Derric Evans and Gary Edwards. They took part in a series of robberies of video stores and fast-food restaurants that year. I am sure Derric would have been a first round pick if he had not screwed up. Evans, the safety who had signed with Tennessee, was sentenced to 20 years (he served six). Edwards, who had signed with Houston, was sentenced to 16 years (he served nearly four). In all 12 students were arrested for 21 robberies.
