Yea....the marching is usaully awesome, but i have not cared for their music much over the past four years. They usally have a long solo with crazy marching or its their pit playing while their band does complex drill.

LOVE 'EM!! awesome seats, i sit in the upper corner of those seats, (the side closest to homeside), its awesome, got the backrest, got the aisle for easy movement, i cna talk to people not in band right next to the bleachers and stuff, its awesome, not to mention a great view of the field, i do wish we were on the other side though, right in the middle of the field, but the seats are good enough, i think it allows the home crowd to hear the band a little better, cause were projecting towards you guys more, vs liek at away games where we project out and away

The sound for the fans is a lot better since the move. I bet that you don't see much if you are on the first row and the team is close to the scoreboard. Being at the top though you can see pretty much everything.

Reagan and Churchill are definetly the flagship schools for San Antonio as far as band is concerned. They represent San Antonio with class and pride.

No doubt. Churchill has a phenomenal brass line. My private instructor for trumpet through HS, Mike Palermo, teaches all the top players. They have a great sound.
Katy got straight 1's. :) We left right after and don't know about the rest of the region.

Bands are proud for announcing their "Division I" ratings during halftime...believe me, it is not that hard to get one. You have to be really really bad not to get a 1.
Smithson Valley's band is so boring and they aren't even loud. I think they got a 1. They nearly put me to sleep one time. LOL
Churchill on the other hand...now THAT is a BAND!

Got to see the Allen band when I went to the SLC vs Allen last season in the playoffs...
They are definately loud, now question about that. When you have 500 people in the band you better be. I hear it is close to 700 this year.
It's strange how fast they're growing.
I remember in 2001 when Longview faced them they were just around 200..230 around there.

You'd be surprised. I'm in the Katy Band and our directors have told us countless stories about how bands would execute the drill perfectly and the music perfectly, but because of either: how they came onto the field or if they had on inappropiate uniform attire, they would get a division 2 from a judge. Also a band could have earned a D-I rating, but because they went overtime (8:00 max) that automatically drops them down.
No offense to you, but if you have never been in a competitive marching band before, no one can possibly imagine what pride and joy one can experience when 3 months of preparation for one show is showcased in 8 minutes, and there are no second chances.
That's why we brag about Division I ratings :D

Yep, I can name a few off the top of my head.
Cinco Ranch got a 2nd division. 1 2 2
Willowridge got a 2nd division. 2 2 2
Morton Ranch got a 2nd division 2 2 2
Everyone at Katy was kinda shocked that Cinco got a 2 because they have been known to be better than us. More bragging rights for us :)

acuttaly its 15 min isnt it?? 8 to perform, then the rest to get on/off the field?? but either way you make a good point, and how people dont realize how hard it is to get ones, all the crap we go through, my friend made a good point (hes a senior so it is a vaild one), everytime we perform, a lot of us think we suck, or our show sucks etc etc, and he said this is because instead of telling us how good we do, the directors tell us what were doing bad and we never recieve the good news as much as the bad news, so when we get a one, were all yippie skippie, yada yada and want to brag because of that in his oppioion, and it i agree with it............also, marching band is diffrent than football, everyother year you can go to state, this years its 4a and 2a/1a i think? next year its 5a and 3a? and it switches everyyear, so in "state" years, the shows arent as good IMO, their more of, lets showcase our playing or marching not both usually..like last year for the dragon band, our show wasnt nearly as complex as this years...last year's music was extremly easy vs this year, the forms were easier to make last year then this year, this years we have a little bit harder music, we march at diffrent speeds, and the forms are a little harder to make, so in it seems nonstate years seem to be harder to put on the field....glad to have another band nerd on here...oh reminds me somebody wrote on the band hall board yesterday "were not band nerds, were band hotties"

You bring up some good points. Regarding the 8 minutes...yes you have 5 minutes to get on the field and 2 minutes to get off, the 8 i was referring to was the moment the music starts till it ends. I have a director who is ALWAYS negative...almost. He's so critical of our band, he gives us the mindset that we suck and won't achieve our goal, unless we practice some insane hours to get it "half-way there". Yes, this isn't a state year, but for 5A and 3A it will be next year.
You have to keep this in mind...I remember going to the Area band contest last year at Comalander Stadium, and I remember a lot of the shows many different bands performed. They were very entertaining to the crowd, and the complexity of the drill and music was elementary, intermediate at best. But those were the bands who advanced on, why? Because Area judges don't focus on fundamentals and picky stuff like UIL does. Think of it more like Bands of America. Our band last year was immediately ranked low because our show was boring, even though we demonstrated superior marching technique and all the other stuff judges at UIL looks for. I'm sure that Southlake produces some good stuff, we tend to do jazz shows for our "off" years.
dragons08

last year we did a "metals" theme and this year a latin theme...i wish we did some jazz, i play saxophone so theres my reason for wanting a jazz, but classic rock would be cool too..as for produces some good stuff, i like to think we do, but im on the field and not a spectator, so i cant comment on that, from what ive seen on DVD of us, it sounds great and looks pretty good
Katy5a07

Dude we have lots in common, I play saxophone too lol. A jazz show is always a good entertainer, but sometimes judges don't know how to judge jazz, which can lead to misleading ratings, if you know what I mean.

When I went to school in the 70's, the idea of South getting a 2 in contest was unheard of. They had gotten 1's for ever. Garland had 50 in the band when I was there and they marched in a box and the sound was horrible. They got 3's every year I was there, and a horrible 4 two years in a row in sight reading. Things sure have changed.

Hey, Pachal found something they're good at! When I fired Paschal I asked when was the last time they were very good at football. Last week I talked to a former Pachal RB and he agreed they were terrible and can't compete against their district rivals.

To answer your question about LD Bell: Yes, they are attending the North Texas Marching Festival from what I have heard. I have friends at Rowlett and they have been told they are.
And not to attack Reagan and Churchill, but judging in BOA Competitions and UIL State is completely different. Overall, I think Churchill has the edge over Reagan, even though Reagan did win a BOA regional, and have the highest score out of all of the bands in the nation so far. UIL-wise, LD Bell, Duncanville, and Churchill tend to have the edge.

The biggest and loudest band's i have ever seen was Abilene Cooper around 97 when i was attending college in Abilene and Allen a few year's back when Lufkin beat them in the playoffs. HUGE band's. Same guy...hes known as somewhat of a pied piper. Rumor is that Joe Martin got him hired here for the second most money in the district (next to Martin) and now he makes more money than anyone else in Allen ISD.
I don't know how he does it. The band just kind of feeds off itself now. Growing because its so big that people just want to be part of it.

Us (Hays) will be there in Mesquite next weekend, kind of an uphill fight for us going against the defending state champions and other great bands, but we've won a contest this year in SA and got straight 1's at UIL. I'm looking forward to seeing other bands a lot, we went 2 years ago, missed finals by 1 place with that whole "3 bands tied for 10th so we're taking 12" (we were 13th). The upside to that was that we got to see other bands Langham Creek and Allen with that bad *** Fiesta 2003 show. We've got a strong show going this year with music from Carmen, it'd be great for us to make finals!

you mean concert bands? or do bands acuttaly stay in one place on the field?? during the playoffs, our playoff show consists of spelling Carroll Dragons, then i think in the state game we spelled state as well, this followed the Emerald Belle dance thing and then some colorguard thing

We've got a strong show going this year with music from Carmen, it'd be great for us to make finals!
sounds like this contest should be awesome, we did not participate in a contest this year (except UIL), we were planning some dragon contest or something, but it didnt happen, last year we entered into 2, one we made it to finals but we didnt go (it was HC night), another the finals got rained out, then for Area we made it to finals but got likt 6th or 7th, we tied with keller, we were in an EXTREMLY hard district, ld bell, coppell, richland, haltom...yikes!!!

That was my favorite show EVER(the Fiesta)...man that contest was awesome for us. We beat a lot of bands that we hadn't beat since moving to 5A. I think there is a tiny bit of DFW bias at NTC, but I could be wrong. Good luck
I didn't like the Langham Creek show very much, twas strange. LD Bell is going this year. I never got to see them so I wish I was still in high school.

There are still quite a few military bands in the East Texas and Golden Triangle area. Longview, Kingwood and Lufkin seem to be some of the only 5A schools that have kept that tradiition. But a lot of the smaller schools in this area have: Buna, Hemphill, Center, Nacogdoches, Jacksonville, Henderson, etc.

thanks for the kind words man, personally i think its wayyy better from last year, and from what the seniors tell me its the best theyve done too, it feel cool to be part of
from some of the neutral band "experts" that I have talked to, they said that Carroll's playing is always really good, but their marching is not that great. Is there any truth to this?

The Dragon Band does not have very foward looking leadership. The band can play the music flawlessly but have no imagination in the showmanship. The kids in the Carroll band are very talented but are not given enough material to work with. Go see the L.D. Bell band. Their show is almost a broadway productions with sites, movement, action at all points of the field all through the performance. I will admit that I do not always get the finer points of a marching performace or the symbolism of any of the elements that are being protrayed but I do now what appeals to me. A rather dull marching effort with great music is fine, but a very imangative and agressive marching/dancing band is more fun to see.
I still think that the Emarld Bells are one of the best dance teams I have seen. However I still look back at the Katy band and dance team and see what they did at the state game that put the Carroll band to shame. Katy not only won the football game by 1 point but they won the halftime show by a landslide!

yes, our playing is good, a ton of good indiviual players, but our marching isnt there, we let freshman march, and there are a lot of freshman, so it takes a year to get used to, we usually play extremly well together, but someimtes, we all get caught up in a game, and just lose focus, which causes us to do a major suck job at times

our leadership sucks?? that is the most crap i have ever heard..you do NOT realize how hard they work at all, they work on weekends, they watch our films study them, all that stuff, over the weekend, there there from 730-730 every single day, then till 1230-1 for football games, so dont talk trash about the leadership...if our show is dull..its because, theres some other guy, not even related to carroll that usually writes it, this year one of the dragon teachers, wrote the music, with some guy making the charts..we also cant do complex shows because of the size of our band and the various skills avaible...but thank you for the comment about our playing..and yes our emeraled belles are awesome, they work extremely hard to, and it sure pays off

I did not say the leadership sucks. I said that it is not foward thinking and imagnative. There is no doubt that the band and bealls work very hard. If fact if you search on my posts you will see that I have said that the band and bealls work harder than the football team! I admire your work ethics and the precision that you put into the program. I only question the programs themselfs. They lack the imagination and wit that other schools with top notch bands perform.

oh im sorry man i just misunderstood, but like i said ultimatley its not the bands fault, its the one guy who writes it, who isnt part of carroll at all..plus its harder to get 350+ people on the field doing complex forms and what not, but i do wish or show was better, more dancing would be cooler

Having never been in a marching band, all I can comment on is what I have seen by watching the bands during halftimes. I love all the high school pagentry and efforts that are put in. I agree that the size of the band is intimidating but I have seen the Allen band perform and they are HUGE. The most impressive thing about them is the SOUND that they make as they march into the stadium! They can really generate a sonic wave when they are marching and the brass is really belting it out. You can actually feel the breeze from sound blasting from their instuments. Did I mention that their band has an unblievable number of members?
I really like the Dragon quest for quality and the hard work that is put into creeating that quality. I would just love to see the Southlake band do some rocking and rolling and show some spunk and spirit in the perfomaces. I loved the way the Haltom band came in a danced and played. I think all of the Southlake fans gave them a standing ovation after their performance!
Continue to strive for greatness. It is better to strive and fail than to never have tried at all!

allen has a TON of brass players, plus their already HUGE number, OH MAN, it is some scary stuff...i couldnt see haltom's show when we played them, but i see all the slc fans stand up and start clapping i was like wow it must of been awesome!! the only time you guys stand up and clap for us is when we play fight song! :p ...its all cool, yea i think we need a rock and roll show with some dancing, like we do in the stands, we dance wayyy to much in the stands, if we could do a small fractions of what we do in the stands on the field, itd be awesome!

its awesome in the endzone, great seats, were field level to, so when we kickoff and make all that racket and the opposing team is right in front of us trying to catch it, it kind of messes with their head IMO, only bad part is, if your in the front of those bleachers closet to home side, you cant far endzone right side, but if your in the back your fine

another thought, i hate away games for that reason we project out towards other side, like we played the "hey song" like 2 or 3 times, first time we played it we just played it towards the field, and the dragon fans around us did the "hey go dragons", then when we faced you guys and did it, more people did "hey go dragons" which leads me to my next point...on the 4th and 20, i startred a "lets go dragons" thing a couple gpvine colorguard people were meeting with your colorguard, and startred saying lets go mustangs..boy did i want to hit her!! she cursed it and thats why they converted!! (my lame excuse for the conversion)

I was not in favor of putting the Band in the End Zone when the seating for the stadium and allocation of sections due to demand for tickets conversations were brewing back in 2002-2003. I am now a firm believer in them because I get to see the band and the support they give the Dragons throughout the game. If they are on the same stands as I, then I miss them. The Dragon band and it's members are truely the 12th man for the SLC Dragons!

I was really impressed by the Southlake Carroll band during the DR/SLC halftime,. they were really good, and with their drill team the whole halftime show was great.
I was also impressed by the Haltom band during this weeks game., I knew SLc was going to be good but i didnt think Haltom would be as good as it was., I dont think ive ever seen a band have marching bass clarinets, alto saxes, pre-recorded music playing and people singing all in one show.... props to that school, i think bands are getting better and better every year and there is finally a reason to stay in your seats during halftime
there are lots of other good bands ive seen this year., but this is a football forum so ill stop, lol

thanks for compliments!!! when you say alto saxes, i think you mean bari saxes...alto is the one that most people play (saxophone wise) bari is the real big one with curvy neck, tenor is the one with a curved neck, alto has a straight next, soprano looks like a clairnet, but is not, and its silver/goldish usually

baritones and marching frenchhorns look pretty similar with the baritone being bigger, i think the trombones are pretty much standard sizes, not sure though...since were speaking of trombones, the trombones made a hat that said "we bone together" they call themselves the bones and everything im sure most bands do, and they got in trouble for it, for obvious reasons, so they found a ton of diffrent deffintions and stuff, like to study etc...still didnt work so they just got rid of the bone part on their hats, now all it says is We ___ Together, with their nickname on there to, its hillarious a waste of 20 bucks if you ask me

I love watching and listening to other bands. Some are just absolutely unforgettable - like Willowridge and Humble. Willowridge puts on a "show" - Humble is a great military marching band. They have also surpised me by performing alot of religious music at the games.
I'm anxious for playoffs to get here as I enjoy watching the bands almost as much as the games - ;)
