He used to play with Frank Zappa. He's also done some work with Tony Levin. I've known him as mostly a soloist. He's got a some DVDs out. I still have a VHS somewhere. A friend in high school (drummer) showed me some of his stuff.
He actually lives in Austin, and his son Raanen went to Westlake (up and coming music talent).

No doubt Bozzio is a very talented drummer but that is WAY too much crap to have on your drum set. How can you even keep track when you have 5 bass drums?

The really crazy thing is he uses every bit of it when you watch one of his solo concerts. Most of the full pieces he does are 6-10 minutes long.

I love me some good drummers but I don't know if I could sit through a solo set by a drummer. After awhile it would be nice to hear something other than percussion...but I guess if you have the skill (and the monstrous set) to pull it off then I can't complain.

I'd say Bozzio is one of three drummers, that I've heard anyway, I could watch solo.
Neal Peart and Mike Portnoy are the other two.

All three of those guys are amazing but I still don't know that I could sit and watch any drummer play an entire set by himself. A drum solo is one thing, but an hour of the same drummer would probably get old. The music needs to breathe and while I'm sure any drummer worth his salt can manipulate the dynamics to keep you on your toes, I'm not so sure a drum set provides the array of sounds to do it consistently enough to keep me occupied for long stretches of time.
Though if any set gets close its that Bozzio kit.

Nah, I'll thank you now. I mean, the Moby Dick solo isn't new to me but thats was a good link to drop. Well, the first one is...the second one doesn't work.
Still though, it's not one drummer playing an entire set by himself and that is what I was talking about originally.
Speaking of drummers, I am compelled to mention the nine time National Champion Marcus drumline.
I think they may be the finest competitive High School group in the country athletic or otherwise.
This link will take you to the 03/04 years. I like the 8 person tenor line from '04, but think the '03 video is a little more clean.

Bozzio has played with Zappa, Korn, Jeff Beck and a bunch of other acts. And yes, a kit that big is okay when you use them all and he does. Portnoy is another that has a huge kit. He actually uses two completely different kits that are combined into one. It gives two completely different sounds from one song to another.

jtk, have you come across anyone who uses cymbals like Bozzio? He's the only one I've seen who layers. I know he designed a line for Sabian called the Radia. Got to love that China/Crash combo.

I've seen Peart and Zappa live, way back when...but no one could play like Bonham....when you heard it on 8 track back then and then you saw it live it was incredible...another great drummer was the guy from Yes...I can't remember his name, but he was one of the outstanding percussionists...

Bill Bruford, who left Yes to join King Crimson.
The coolest thing about Bozzio is how he got into Zappa's group. My dad and I went to a Bozzio clinic at Guitar Center years ago and he talked about his time with Zappa. Zappa had written a drum solo he called The Black Page. It was incredibly complex and earned the Black Page name because when looking at the sheet music, the page is completely covered in notes. Bozzio sight-read it and got the spot in Zappa's band.
That's how he was telling the story when we saw him at least. It's been rearranged to feature other instruments several times since it was first written so that it's actually a full song.
My dad saw Zappa live with Bozzio in the 70s and he said the cocert opened up with Bozzio soloing, until eventually the band came in and they played through their first song. When the song ended Bozzio kept soloing. For at least two and a half hours Bozzio never stopped playing, connecting each song with the Black Page solo.

I think that even in a lot of drumming circles, Carter Beauford is one of the most underrated drummers out there. Even people who don't like DMB have to recognize...

The Mars Volta dropped a new album not too long ago and the new drummer they got is pretty sick. May not be in the 'elite' class yet because nobody knows who he is, but I seriously hope they decide to keep this guy around. TMV switches up their backing band too much, IMO.

Beauford is one of my favorite drummers. When DMB started, he was not very good (compared to his talent now), but now I love his style. He has some chops that not many people can pull off.

Same with me. As long as the solo is part of a song and doesn't last too long nor deviate from the rhythm of the song it's O.K. for me. I don't even like long guitar solos. I like songs. They are like little short stories. They have a beginning and an end like life. A solo to me is like taking one page of a story and copying it over and over and over. I still appreciate those guys talent but my attention span is not forever.

I wonder what the fan sounds like.. :D
Concerning The Black Page, it's been a while since I read Zappa's autobiography, but from what I remember TBP started out as a joke. Zappa had a sense of humor; a demented, twisted sense of humor that he wasn't afraid to inject into his music.
So at a rehearsal Zappa over hears some of the musicians talking about how scary it would be to walk into a session and have to read a "black page", a sheet of music full of incredibly difficult, intricate rhythms and melodies. Session musicians ritually walk into a studio, read a piece down a couple of times, and then record it. With that in mind you can kind of understand where Zappa was coming from.
So Zappa writes TBP, gives Bozzio a little time to chew on it, and there it is. Zappa adds a melody and harmony to the rhythmic structure, and the The Black Page is born.
