View Full Version : Playoff Droughts...

There are a few schools that have 5-yr., 10-yr. playoff streaks. Then there are others that have 10yr., 20 yr. playoff droughts. My alma mater, Lubbock High has not been to the playoffs since 1975 (doesn't look like they will make it this year either). What other schools are experiencing such long streaks of non-playoff action? Midland High broke their 51-year playoff drought in 2002. Surely, Lubbock High will go to the playoffs again (don't know when but they will). What are some other long playoff droughts that were broken?

Well, there are many schools in Texas that haven't even won a state title. Luckily my alma mater has won 3 (1939, 1951, 1952). However, LHS's last playoff WIN was 1952. Lubbock High lost to Amarillo Caprock 35-0 in 1975.(technically we were awarded bi-district because Caprock had an ineligible player--so I guess officially we have a playoff win in 1975). Still hopin' for some playoffs.

Well everybody's chances will go up big time next year with 4 freaking teams going per district. Just wait a few year and it will definitely end because the UIL is going to send everybody pretty soon.

Four playoff teams is rather ridiculous. When LHS makes the playoffs I at least hope they will finish 2nd (maybe 3rd) in the district. People can have losing records IN DISTRICT and make the playoffs!!! I don't know what is going through the minds of UIL members.

of course those 2-8 teams really need to be taking on the district champ from next door. what purpose does it serve and who's going to go to such a game? since i blame every thing else on the privates, how do i include them in this? their lawyers must have something to do with it. and with 6 man and 1a 11 man schools going to d-1 and d-2, i wonder how many byes the district champ will get. many if not most are in 6 man districts any way, and there are 10+ missing districts already. the uil morons must have really thought long and hard about this after lunch and before their 1400 tee time. the old saying that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely has reared its butt-ugly head here.

If you consider the fact that there have literally been dozens of new schools that have opened since 1990 that have been large schools, all that adding a 4th playoff team does is equalize the percentage of 5A teams that make the playoffs again from back when they first added the third team. Im almost sure that less than 50% of schools will end up in the playoffs with a 4th playoff team in 5A next year. Thats not really so bad. There are several 6 team 5A districts that advance 3 team to the playoffs. Thats 50% right there. So if the UIL makes 8-9 team districts with 4 playoff teams, then its still less than half. Im totally for the 4th playoff team. And I dont work for the UIL; Im just a fan.

My issue with the 4 teams per district is that if size is still a determining factor for div 1 and div 2. If you look at this years playoffs you will see that a lot of the better schools would be going Div 1 if there were 4 teams per district and that Div 2 would be just a showdow of Div 1. The way I looked at it you would have SLC, Trinity, Westlake, Lufkin, Longview, North Shore, Katy, Clements, all in Div 2. Smithson Valley would be in Div 2. Which Div would be the true champs? Smithson Valley that played a lot of 2nd tier teams or the winner of Div 1 with all the top tier teams in it?
