View Full Version : DKR remodel taking shape
I know this has been brought up several times, but is ASTOUNDS me how much the place has changed since I was in school in the early 90's.
I am a stadium buff and think it is actually becoming a great stadium. The North endzone will be complete and it may be an intimidating place to play.
Here is a link to some pics someone took this weekend.

It looked incredible during the Spring game. It's going to be a beast when all is said and done. The godless swine will get an earful in a couple of months.
More pics. The structure in the upper level is now taking shape.

Top 5 I think by opening day?
I really hope OU closes off the bowl and adds more 2nd level seating sometime in the next 10 years, I'd really like to see the Big 12 stadiums and venues compete with the SEC.

I'd like to see the Big XII's gameday atmosphere bumped up as well. UT's new stadium is going to be something really cool that will be a showpiece for the conference. In terms of venues for gamedays I think that looking at things objectively you have to include OU, UT, Nebraska, and A&M as some of the must see spots for any serious college football fan. If you were going to try to hit the best spots for college football over a lifetime you would want those venues on your list.
But the Big XII is always going to be a little less intense than the SEC. Staid midwesterners and laid-back beer drinking Texans are always going to be just a bit more toned down than a bunch of folks from Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, etc. that started swilling bourbon at 8:00 AM. Plus, in Texas, all the serious football fans already used up most of their energy at the Friday night game the day before:D
The Big XII has its own style and should embrace it.

When my daughter went for her UT tour recently, the tour guide said 106,000. I didn't know there were that many Horns in the state. Must be making room for more Aggies to come see the Texas A&M wins.

Official capaicity looks to be in the 93,000 range. My guess is that it will top out 95,500 range or a tad higher. There will be little sideline room any longer.
The SEZ, bleacher seats were larger last year than they will be this year(7K to 3k I believe). That's because they had to make room for the people displaced because of the ongoing construction.
From the official website:
The DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium project, which will be completed for next football season, will expand the facility's seating capacity to more than 93,000.

I agree with that now, but didn't just a couple of years ago. I wanted the gameday atmosphere to rival the SEC which, as anyone who has been to an SEC game will tell you, is unmatched. However, I was interested and shocked by the comments made by the Ohio State fans after they came to Austin. If you went to any of their boards after that game or talked to any fans that attended, a vast majority will tell you Austin and UT was the best football scene they have ever wittnessed and it was that because it wasn't all crazy. The fans are many, they are inviting and friendly, the party is spread all over the city and not confined to a ginat parking lot or two and the fans just want to enjoy a day of BBQ, beer and football. You wont find a lot of :Censor:-talkers and trouble makers around... not near as many as the SEC or Big Televen. Texas strives for it's atmosphere to be more "Pac 10-like" and I hope the rest of the conference follows that lead.

They count three times...don't ask me how...its what they tell me. so it must be true.
All of the permanent structures are up as of today. Much finishing to do, but I think it looks awesome.

As much as I love the recnfiguration, the lower seats in #1 and #32 are absolutley terrible.

If UT keeps winning, those won't exist in 5 years. What I'm really curious about is how the permanent south endzone structure will look that they are building next offseason. A straight stand like OU's or a small, but bowled in structure. I'm hoping for the latter. Would look better and make future expansion easier.

Is getting in to the game still Lottery for UT students? I thought I heard this somewhere...may be wrong though. As a Tech student I love being able to get in to the games almost guaranteed. Hopefully these seats will allow the UT people to end the lottery.

I have NO idea about that. When I was in school, it cost $52 for the sports sticker for a year. Got you into every game except the ou game in Dallas.
You may have had to sit in line awhile, but you'd be in. Also used to give opposing teams 10,000 seats. a$m filled them easily.

They still have the lottery and will continue to have it. Texas knows that the Alums will pay the high dollar for the tickets, so, for Texas, there is no need to give more tickets to the students than they have to. Quite pathetic IMO.

The students have a draw during the weak where they can pick up tickets with a LASP. It's not really a lottery so much as it is a first come first serve single ticket draw. Only one ticket is available per LASP and no guest tickets are available unless some student tickets aren't picked up.
There may be a slight increase in the number of seats available to students, but it will be small. The band is moving to the South endzone and most of the North endzone is devoted to visiting fans the old horseshoe season ticket holders and club seats. There's just too many students and way too much demand to set aside 50,000 student tickets in a stadium where 75,000 seats are owned by season ticket holders and another 4,000 go to visitors.
For grins, here is what the stadium looked like when I was in school.
You see the track and no upper deck except on the west side. Lots of good things we thought at the time, but looking back on it, it kind of sucked.
http://www.utexas.edu/courses/com314/graphics/stadium.gif
This was the next iteration. They removed the track, lowered the field along the sideline, and added an upper deck on the east side. The north end zone remained basically the same, except there was an odd slope from the back of the end zone to where the stands started.

Here is the closest angle to keep it close. It astounds me to see how this has grown and improved in 15 years. Just to see how close the stands are to the field from then to now is amazing.

That would be unfair if OU/TX was home and home
Not going to lie, your old setup was pretty cruddy. It looks amazing now, I am going to have to see a game there some day.
I don't see OU closing off the bowl for some reason, it would get in the way of the Switzer Center and the nice main entrance and driveways, and the school has been offered a few times by sponsors to close it off and still haven't done it.
I'd rather see us do what you guys did and add a second level to the closed off endzone. Owen Field get's pretty loud, I can't imagine it with another level added to the bowled endzone
Another update w/Mack and Royal. I never knew that the stadium did not have north end zone stands originally.

As a UT student, there are 2 ways to go about your tickets. To be even in the running you need the Longhorn All Sports Package or what ever its name is, that runs around $70 that is coupled with your tuition if you choose to pay it. If you only buy that you are put into a drawing for tickets and you have a chance at getting some. You have to go line up really early, most likely miss class and it isn't very organized. Another way to go about it is if you also purchase season tickets that is another 110 dollars (minus OU and aTm, to put your name into consideration you have to pay 80 for OU and 80 for aTm). With this you are guaranteed tickets to home games no matter what but this runs up pretty quick. Hopefully with the increase in seats more students that actually care about football can go to the games. I completely stopped going last year because I couldn't stand sitting there listening to a group of middle easterners (sorry if any of you are from that part of the world) talking about god knows what in the middle of the embarrassing 21-13 win over Arkansas St. I nearly lost it, and with the exception of going to the Nebraska game with my dad I watched every home game at the frat house on the projector because beer+ our grill + people that like football + girls in their game day attire = a lot more fun the DKR
My older brother goes to UF and I went and saw the UF Tenn game at the Swamp and the biggest differences between DKR and the Swamp is this, UF actually wants their stadium to be intimidating. Almost half of the stadium ( from the ten yd line on one side, then runs across the endzone wrapping around to the 45 on the other side of the stadium) is for students. All students are guaranteed season tickets for 45 dollars and it is a terrible place to play because of this. DKR is never loud unless something big happens, there is no cheering, just drinking essentially pre-gaming it for the party that is happening after the game somewhere. The funniest game day site I ever saw was seeing a man filling up 2 bottles of whiskey and one of milk for his baby. Girls and guys a like come up with some pretty awesome ways of sneaking their drink of choice into DKR. I sensed at the Swamp the drunkeness was unecessary. They are loud regardless. The only people being loud at DKR are the fratstars (sadly I must include myself in this) who are so gone from drinking since around 10 in the morning when our pregame festivities start. Their are too many other people (most likely science majors or what not) who don't cheer. They are terrible and I hate DKR because I went to one game at the Swamp.

I am not in school now, but I really think this is more common other places than you realize. I'd also suggest your perspective is a little skewed as well. You drink w/your buddies for several hours and go to a game with them and think you are the only ones yelling. Most of the fans probably think the same thing, and there are plenty of posters complaining about the frat guys just interested in drinking/talking/hooking up w/their dates and not into the game.
Not that DKR is the best atmosphere in the country, but it is about on par with most I'd say.

Anyone know at the top of their head how big that HD screen is at DKR? The one in the Cowboys stadium is supposed to be the biggest one in the world, correct?

I believe you are correct. I am fairly certain there are at least one or two bigger now. A horse race track in Asia I think.

The HDTV being put in the new Cowboys stadium is supposed to be 160' x 70'. Making it larger than the one in Asia.

The one in Asia doesn't count since it's actually three separate screens connected together. The largest true HD screen in use is at Chase Field in Phoenix (Diamondbacks)...
