Now that the playoffs are around the corner. I wanted to bring up the subject of who has the best fan support when in comes to traveling with your team. Either teams that you've played against or how well your team travels. I know part of the excitement of a high stakes game is the roar of the crowd and the atmosphere it creates for both the teams on the field and the fans in the seats. The Eagles regulary travel with 7-10K for every away game during the season and it increases during the playoffs. Last year at Texas Stadium we brought at least 15K to DFW. Coming down I-20 it seemed like every car I passed had an Eagle logo on it of some kind. What does your team bring. :D :D

If you're talking about Abilene, then I'd agree there. I was shocked to see Abilene match the number of Southlake fans at their playoff matchup last year. I remember hearing that they were known for traveling and that they'd match southlake fans. Needless to say i didn't believe it, but boy was i wrong!
And of course, Dragon Nation is known for traveling.

SV, Katy, SLC, and Judson are the four that come to mind. I would also have to say San Benito after they filled every seat endzone to endzone in the Alamodome last year, but people have told me that all of the RGV teams have that kind of fan support.

For me, and I think many would agree, it begins and ends with Lufkin. I love the stickers on the cars that say something like "im on my way, to watch the Lufkin Panthers play". They have a very spirited crowd and one that will impress anyone.
When we are in the playoffs, we always have a great crowd, We will go endzone to endzone in the playoffs, and the further we go the more we get. We had a very big crowd in 96 at Floyd Casey against Judson, and again in 99 against Waco High.
SLC travels very well, and their fan base is very knowledgeable when it comes to football.
Plano will bring a big crowd to playoff games, and I think this year you will see some huge crowds at Plano games.
The king of kings for playoff crowds is PNG, Port Neches Grove, these fans are fantastic and very passionate about the Indians.

Longview and Lufkin fans travel well during the playoffs, and the regular season. The 25,000+ at the LV/LP game last year prove that. Longview's fans have also stayed through rain delays to watch the games. Last year we stayed through an almost 2 hour rain delay in Mesquite to play Horn. It was sad, there were more fans on our side than on theirs after the delay. Also, last year during the playoffs, there was a long rain delay against Dallas Jesuit and the majority of our fans stuck it out and stayed for the entire game.

Dragon Nation travles all together, i remember leaving the lufkin game ( i got to go home with parents not ride with the band) and the whole way back it was just a line of SLC cars, plus at the starbucks nearby, we stopped, mammoth of slc cars in the parking lot/drive thru, it was insane!

I love when people start threads that encourage people to talk about their teams when really their only motive is to point out that their team does something better than yours. Why didn't you just call this thread Abilene High travels well. People think they are smart by starting threads saying "who has the best ...." and then either in the first post or the first few posts they name their team or player.

I think the fan support for the east texas teams is the most impressive....simply because it usually means a two hour drive (at least) for each game...and to see teams brings as much or if not as many as the dallas and houston area schools says alot.

not all the time, i rememer starting a thread "best all around sports program" i got accused of doing that, i amde that thread out of curiosity, yes i know carroll has a great athletic program, and i know what other schools have a good footbal lteam, but i was curious how schools athletic programs were as a whole, so maybe this guy is just curious?

I have to 2nd the motion on Port Neches - Groves. In the mid 70's the team I followed was Baytown Sterling. They had a playoff game versus PN-G in Lamar University Stadium in Beaumont and it was so foggy you could barely see the players and not the opposite stands. But the roars they were letting out was down right frightening. The fog lifted in the 3rd quarter and they had their side FULL and it was solid purple. Is was every bit as impressive as Odessa Permian when we played them th '72 state championship.

They're not 5a and I don't know if it is still this way but PNG in 4a used to bring both towns + about 3 or 4 thousand! When we played them in 99' in the semis at College Station there were over 30,000 people and I'll guarantee you at least 20,000 were there fans! When they were playing an away game their web site used to say "Last one leaving town, turn off the lights". Unbeleivable fan support!!!!
I think it also depends on where you play and who is doing the counting. in 03' SC and SV played in the Alamo Dome and the bottom of both sides were completely filled all the way around and into the end zones. There were many fans in the upper deck also and the SA Express News the next day reported est attendance of 9,000. What a joke! There were at least that many on each side of the Dome! Either someone didn't finish first grade math, or somebody didn't want somebody else to know exactly how many tickets were sold at the gate!!! LOL 9,000 * $7.00 = $63,000 = pretty nice pay day!!!! LOL

It seems like any team that travels to the Alamodome from the Valley brings an impressive crowd. Pharr San Juan North (The Raiders) brought one of the loudest crowds I''ve heard in the dome a couple years back when they played SA O'Connor! Last year San Benito had a huge following but they became pretty quite mid 1st Quarter when Smithson Valley pretty much shoved them around at will!

Where did he brag that Abilene was better than anyone else? he said what Abilene will bring to a playoff game, and then followed with a question of who else is known for bringing in a crowd. There is nothing wrong with this thread, since you have such a problem with it, just ignore it and don't read it.

Lufkin always brings a crowd, and they show up early... BUT!
I have to go with PNG as well..In 99 the Garland vs Katy game was followed by the PNG vs Stephenville and the PNG fans were there hours before the game was even set to begin, and they were LOUD. The largest following I have ever seen at one game.

PNG, and it ain't even close. We were playing Katy in 1999 and the PNG fans were on our side and they outnumbered us before our game started and they cheered LOUDLY for us because they didn't want Katy to win. To put an exclamation point on this, Garland travels very well, for a suburban school with the city divided between 6 teams, at that time, and we had a huge turnout in the Astrodome, for a 4 hour trip, and the PNG folks just blew us away with the noise and sheer numbers. Honestly, they played a part, with their support of us, in the winning of the game. PNG and Garland together was just deafening.
Some squads that really turn out that I don't believe have been mentioned yet:
Highland Park (though they come fashionably late) :D
Ennis
John Tyler
Longview
Stephenville
Denton Ryan
Midland Lee
Abilene Cooper
Celina (this 2A school will put most 5A schools to shame)

Denton Ryan has a horrible fan following, they are usullay lucky to go from the 25-25 at most playoff games, and in some cases have only had 2 1/2 sections filled at TX Stadium. They would be at the top of a list for worst fan support for winning teams.

your right and I think that has to do with Denton being a relatively new and up and coming city. When you get people that move into town from other states they just do not understand that you should travel an hour to Texas stadium to support your high school team. I mean it took my family a few years after moving to Southlake that we should travel to all of the Carroll games and even go to some of the home games. Since we got "it" we don't miss any unless there is some really important reason.

Denton is not a new city, it is a very established city and the oldest in Denton County. The city is a bronco town and will always be a Bronco town. Back in the late 70's to the late 80's, Denton High produced some great teams, there were a few times when a 12-0 Denton team would meet Permian and would always get beat. This city loves it's football, it just hasn't caught on to Ryan football yet, and if it hasnt now it most likely will not. I think it is sad that DHS fans will not come over and support the Ryan Raiders, but that is just how it goes in this town.

Northshore has the best 12th man in the state. The fans pack the house wherever they go. We packed out The Alamo Dome as well as Rice Stadium as well as upper/lower deck.

Although I think Longview does have a pretty strong fan base, it is not comparable to what Lufkin manages to accomplish. Longview regularly pulls 12 to 15,000 during playoff games but so does Lufkin. All things considered, LP's playoff fan base ratio is unbelievable.
Approx. City Population - Playoff Fan Base - Percentage of City Pop
Lufkin - 35,000 - 15,000 - 43%
Longview - 80,000 - 15,000 - 19%
Obviously, Lufkin is football crazy. Just think about it, if Longview's fan base was as strong as Lufkin's, we would be carrying a playoff fan base of approximately 34,400 (approximately 43% of 80,000). . . Come on Longview fans - get with the program!!
I dont know but Valley teams travel well..dont matter if its week 0, regular season, or playoffs they try and fill the stands..Donna alone at the Dave Texas Classic sold 8500-9000 tickets alone at the school and many more showed up with out tickets..the craziest fan base here in the valley is La Joyas those guys get rowdy..

Yes and back then they had the largest most intimidating band with the mojo smoke and black uniforms. They filled from the 20 to the 20 at Texas Stadium against ET (Et beat them rated number 1 in state 8-7). Great football for sure. You couldn't deny they had a mystic presence when they entered the stadium...Mojo was alive and well. Rather sad they are no longer a contender.

OK, im not seeing anything in this post where he says Abilene is the best.
I am seeing someone who is interested in what other teams bring. He was saying what his team will bring to games, and in no way does he imply that Abilene travels the best.
Honestly as a outsider, I am very impressed with what Abilene will bring to a football game, as I am with Carroll, Lufkin, Judson, Plano, Stephenville, PNG. I think he was just curious to see where Abilene's fan support stacks up against other great programs.
He asked us a question, and by asking us the question he stated what his team will bring, and was curious to see what others bring. He has in no way, shape or form said Abilene travles better than anyone or they are the best. Lay off the guy, as this thread is very interesting to most on this board, it is always interesting to see how teams in different regions of Texas are represented by their communities and fan base.

To be honest, nobody can really answer that question. You can,t rate the teams fans or how many there bring from their cities. A lot of team have fans that live in the large cities when their team plays so they come to games as well. All of these teams have a great fan base so let,s call it a "TIE" any one go for that :)

I understand your point but the fact is that Longview is split into many school districts with many sorrounding schools only fifteen minutes from the city. If we included Pine Tree, White Oak, Spring Hill, Hallsville, Gilmer, Union Grove, Sabine, and a few others I forgot, Longview would have the same or maybe a even bigger fanbase percentage wise.

It is really hard to explain or even understand how much "The Pack" means to Lufkin. Maybe being a smaller town, we just don't have much else to do, but we have an all-inclusive fan base....black, white, hispanic, rich , poor, pre-schoolers to senior citizens. We all back the Pack because it's just plain fun, and I think if they played a game in El Paso, we'd just hitch up the wagons and head west, being very sure we left in time to be at the stadium 2 hours before kick-off.

If we included Pine Tree, White Oak, Spring Hill, Hallsville, Gilmer, Union Grove, Sabine, and a few others I forgot, Longview would have the same or maybe a even bigger fanbase percentage wise.
I understand your point also but only Pine Tree and Spring Hill would fall into the 80,000 equation . . . Don't get me wrong, we have strong support for our Lobos - its just that I think with a population of our size and considering that the other two Longview schools are 4A and 3A, you'd think that we could muster up at least 20 to 25,000 during the playoffs. Maybe its just me, because I feel so fanatical about our football team/program - maybe I'm feeling overly energized in thinking that our fan base should be larger. . .

I think PNG has a crown they'll never give up.

Good catch. That's why I tell you what I think. Some will argue, some will agree, and a lot won't care! It's just not my nature to ask the questions. I want to be the guy giving the answers.
Don't get me wrong, I ask questions to experts and am always trying to learn and read, but I hate the shows where you get a guy to ask questions so smoebody will say the same thing he already knew.

Why Lamar? That stadium is too small.

LOL
The paper stinks. They said Madison-Judson had 12K in 2002 and I've seen it almost as full for other games, but never saw the paper say more than 6K for a Judson home game again.

Oh, yes, Denton. They were last seen....BEING AN ALSO-RAN TO WF RIDER!

Back in the 70's when Plano was still a one Sr. High town, they would put up signs at the city limits before playoff games that said,

They don't do that in Lufkin....since nobody has lights! :p

Attendance is a problem. Big city teams don't usually get behind their team or the others in town. I'll go watch the other local teams in the playoffs and I'll go if somebody comes to my town. My uncle is from Hawkins and went to Tyler back in 1984 to see that 27-27 tie between Daingerfield and Gladewater. He has no ties to either team, but wanted to watch a good game. Lufkin can get those fans at their games and it's not all normal Lufkin fans.

I think the best gauge for LP and Lview would be to look at our playoff games against each other. There were around 26,000 at the game last year. Both sides were packed so I think it would be safe to divide that number evenly over both sides at 13,000. So I think it may be stretching it to say Lufkin travels with 20-25,000. We met at Jt in 2003 and it is smaller than Homer Bryce. I think the inly way we have more fans show up is if its the state championship.

Why would they intentionally under state the # of people in attendance? 1 reason, and 1 reason only. Because the A Dome is collecting money at the gate for tickets sales!!!!! If they reported the correct # they would have to give it to the two schools involved that are earning it!!!
There were at least 15,000 at the Clemens - SV game and also at the Clemens - O'Conner game in 03' and both times they reported around 8 to 9 thousand! give me the good old days when you could fight it out at Alamo Stadium on that nice, soft carpet! LOL Was there anywhere else that could put burns on you any better except for a blow torch!!! The scars don't go away very quick from that old rug!

I think you misunderstood me, I never said Lufkin pulls 20-25,000 . . . go back and re-read my original post. What I said was that I thought we (LV) should be pulling 20-25,000 for playoff games based on the numbers. Clearly I know as it stands, we both pull between 12-15,000 - my whole analysis was based on the population differential (LP-35k:LV-80k) and the fact that LP's fan base support is still equal to ours. Again, maybe I am being over zealous or better yet, simply wishful thinking on my part.

Port Neches Groves (PNG) hands down. Nobody else even close. A big run by them in the playoffs means 18,000 - 30,000 on their side of the stadium alone. When they played Stephenville for 1999 title they literally filled up half of the Astrodome with more than 30,000 fans in purple!

Hey, I was at that miserably, cold rainy game against Garland in Waco on that Thanksgiving Friday. I don't think that's a particularly good barometer of our fans' following. We must sell pretty many tickets because Dave Campbell's group sure likes us in his Alamo Classic.
But it is true that our fans are spoiled by going in the playoffs pretty much every year, so it isn't the once in a blue moon type fervor to go the playoff games that it was in the small town where I grew up. Still, our parents are very involved, and in the Austin area, I'll match our turn out to just about anyone else.

I'll have to agree with chap fan on this one. Although Westlake wont break records with its fan turnout at games, the Chaparrals do have strong turnouts for their football games. I also really dont think that Westlake would make themselves a large home side in their stadium if they didnt use it.

I will add that the football fanbase in Plano has fallen off a bit because of all the sports options. But there is a big game tonight in Plano and I have a feeling that there will be 14,000 plus watching this district game.
East is the visitor and we will have 6000 plus in the stadium. East does travels well most games EXCEPT for the Flower Mound Game. I guess everyone went on vacation or something. But there is a core of Football diehards in Plano. And though I am an East Fan, The Wildcats will wake a sleeping giant of fans if they continue their run into the playoffs.

JC I understand what you are saying totally. We also have to facture in that a lot the people that live in Longview are not originally from here therefore didn't graduate from LHS and probably travel back to their home towns to watch football games. My wife is from Jefferson, you probably know how small Jefferson is, she was in awe when she went to her first Lobo playoff game. But you are right it would be awesome to get 20-25,000 in the stands.

...and to see teams brings as much or if not as many as the dallas and houston area schools says alot.
Actually, it really doesn't say much.....maybe small town high school are the biggest thing in those areas. So making a 2 hour drive is no big deal in Jasper or the Golden Triangle, Abilene...places like that.
However, if you live in Houston....that gas is used for commuting to work....usually there are Astros, Rockets.....Theater etc...more choices.
So unless you have a relative on the team or it's a big playoff game, big city high schools just don't get the same support that small towns give their schools.

I think that Garland may have the best fans, because there is a certain group of guys that are at the games at least two and a half hours in advance, tail gating. They eat, cheer on the team from the parking lot, and talk about the game that we love so much. Then once inside, they cheer louder than any other fans in the stadium. Plus our stadium is always packed, to where it is standing room only. We are very intense, and have ALOT of pride. That is really it. :)

Most of the folks on this board will never get the chance to experience it, but Rio Grande Valley Fans are among the best traveling fans in the state, especially Harlingen.
At the Football Classic this year, Harlingen brought more fans that did Reagan, whose fans only had to travel across town. It is a 4 hour trip from the Valley, and most fans had to get a hotel room. I have been to a game at Corpus Christ's Bucaneer Stadium, a 2.5 hour road trip from Harlingen, where Harlingen outdrew their Corupus Christi Carroll opponent. It is roughly equidistant from Corpus to San Antonio as Corpus to Harlingen, and Harlingen has outdrawn every team from SA or Austin we have played at Buc Stadium.(Excepting Judson) When Harlingen played in the Corpus Christi district for two years, we regularly brought more fans to games in Corpus than the home team did.
This is all the more impressive when you consider that Valley teams are almost never predicted to win against the SA and upstate schools.
Valley football has little to be proud of in our showing versus upstate squads, but our fans back the team on the field like no other group in the state.
