I couldn't find the write-up...Could you please post a link...
Anyways:
Mandeville High Skippers = http://www.forumsextreme.com/imgs1/sFun_rofl.gif
Mandeville is a Nawlins' area school located on what we call the Northshore here...Gotta cross the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway which is about 24 miles long and you basically in Mandeville, Louisiana....It's where the affluent Cajun's reside-if there is such a thing...(lol)....No, really-it's a very nice area for the most part...Alot of boats and some pretty good fishing to be honest...

The Skippers = http://www.forumsextreme.com/imgs1/sFun_rofl.gif
The Skippers really surprised alot of people over here last year....They went 10-3 and lost in the Quarterfinals in the 5A playoffs...They were 6-5 in 2006...Mandeville not really a Louisiana powerhouse....Not sure what they are doing in this showcase....The Skippers did play John Curtis a good game last year...Finally losing 20-3...JC had the Skippers 6-3 at the halftime...I believe Mandeville out gained JC in total yardage..
Anyways, Ruston and JC should be competitive.....

Mandeville is 5A here and was 10-3 last year-great year for the Skippers last year...
John Curtis is 2A...They did spend alot of time in 4A here and won several Titles in that class as well....Curtis has never played in 5A....

Here's a link to a story I found giving background on school: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=2259022
It is a Christian high school, enrollment around 400, competes in 2A, has 21 state championships, including the past 4 years, and was named the #1 high school (all sports ) athletic program in the country in 2007 by SI.
Here's the link to their website: http://johncurtispatriots.pso.com/ and this link http://eteamz.active.com/JCFootball/sponsors/
provides additional info, including all the players they currently have playing collegiate/pro level. Pretty impressive for a school with an enrollment about the same size of the freshmen class at one of the junior high's that feeds into Trinity (or close to that #, anyway)

Ok, thanks...
Ruston vs Northwest
Ruston has alot of history here and has had some super teams in the past...Ruston been alittle down lately(5-5 last year), but any year they can be close to the top 10 if not in the top 10 in 5A here....The Bearcats are no stranger to playing in Texas or should I say playing Longview....Longview up 5-4 in that series...Last time Ruston played Longview was in 2002 with Longview winning 14-0...Longview was 10-4 that year losing to Lufkin 24-21 in the quarterfinals.....I like this matchup...
JC vs Trinity
JC is JC...I believe Trinity will be alittle too strong for Curtis....Curtis will make Trinity play 4 quarters though and give them a good run....
Mandeville vs Klein Oak
Mandeville the Skippers....They had a great year last year 10-3 losing in the quarterfinals here in 5A....The Skippers were senior heavy and I'm not sure how quick this program can reload....It's nice to see them in this event though....I believe Oak may be alittle too strong for the Skippers...Edge-Oak
Should be interesting though and I at least hope we(Louisiana) make a good showing....Of all the teams over here though I can't for the life of me figure how they got Ruston and Mandeville....I'm really shocked they even knew Mandeville was on the map....

La Salle (Cincinnati, OH) was 5-5 last year...Looks like they play in the Greater Catholic League in Cincinnati...La Salle played Indianapolis Cathedral (Indianapolis, IN) last year in the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge losing to Cathedral 7-6...Cathedral was 11-3...

This division contains only 4 teams, but they are among the most awarded four teams in Ohio and the nation for high school sports. All of the schools are male-only. All of the teams are Division 1, meaning they are among the biggest schools in Ohio as far as male enrollment. 4 of the last 6 Ohio state football champions are from this division.

Hey Cajun. Some info on LaSalle.Steve Rasso was their coach for a number of years. The powers that be ran him off. Gerry Faust helped him land the job at St.X., where he then laid the foundation for them being the type of program St.X. is today. I've spent a fair amount of time in Cincinnati over the years and some of the best 6-4, 7-3 teams I have seen belonged to LaSalle. They remind you of a very good light heavyweight who fights in the heavyweight class. They just do not have the dept that Elder, Moeller, and St. X. have had over the years. But LaSalle will buckle it up, strap it on and get after folks. Good tough kids, just not enough to compete more favorably in the GCL-S.

Alot of folks in the "Piney woods" section of east Texas have roots to Georgia and Alabama. And love for good football is a common trait that has not diminished over time and distance. Though it's really a one road (I-20) trip:).
The matchup I would have liked to have seen would be Buford vs Celina, two small schools with big games. The similarities between the schools are eerie. Both located north of a major metro area, and regularly criticized by folks who don't work as hard as Buford and Celina. Buford will be good again. As good defensively? Not likely but still agile, mobile, and hostile.Buford had the chance to dress and play a bunch of players last year so offensively expect no drop off.Big o-line anchored by bookend tackles going 6-6,320 and 6-4,300, and a 6-5 240 tight end.Center and guards will probably be between 240 -265. #'s 51,75,66, and 78have all grown at least an inch and put on 20-30 pounds.Qb daunte Carr was very impressive leading Buford to the Gwinnett jv championship with a 6-0 record while the defense was giving up 16 pts in 6 games. Victories included a 20-0 win over Parkview enrollment 2600+ and a 39-6 win over Brookwood enrollment approx 4000. Some Buford fans will argue that they can drive any team in the state, at least last year, and they are very good. However depth especially along the lines would be their undoing imho. They lucked out a bit last year as Charlton County was replacing 14 starters and Ralph Bolden who had rushed for 1800 yds was out for the season by that point. Still except for a couple of unforced turnovers Charlton probably would have won as their defense shackled Bufords offense and placed em in lockup. CC missed a field goal and suffered an unforced turnover on other trips inside da Wolves redzone.

Wish Louisiana could put on a showcase of some sort and invite some teams down here sometimes....The interest would be great-maybe play it in the Dome here....I could see 35,000 to 40,000 easy....
Georgia could do the same thing-don't believe they have a showcase that I know of....
Anyways, should be a great Texas event and I'm going to try my best to make it....

We have one but it is primarily Atl -area teams. Corky Kell Kickoff Classic, (named after the late much respected athletic director from DeKalb county, whose son was an All American at Tenn) has brought teams in from across the state, but much to my disapointment has refrained from inviting OOS teams.Camden County and Charlton are having a "boarder war" with First Coast and Daytona Seabreeze or Mainland one of the 2. Until the last 20 or so, Georgia high schools played many OOS games against the best comp available. Many long time state powers such as Spartenburg, Parker, Greenville, and Columbia HS's,SC, Asheville, Charlotte, HS's,NC, Tuscaloosa Central, Ensley, Montgomery-Lanier, AL, Miami Jackson,Leon,FL and plenty others have had their worst beatings in school history administered by a Georgia team. And really before the 70's most of us deep South states had fairly even populations.Check out this website cajun.Especially the pre 1948 era when Boys High and Tech High and "The Academy of Richmond County" aka ARC, traveled across the land seeking out, finding, and usually beating the best neighboring states and other East coast states had to offer.
http://www.ghsfha.org/
In the forums check out the Atlanta City League and notice the number of OOS games Boys and Tech High played through 1946. Boys-Miami was usually the game of the South.Between 1931 and 1965 Miami High won 26 Florida Championships.Between 1932 and 1946 the same Miami Stingarees did not lose to a Florida team. The majority of their(few) losses were to a Georgia team, either Boys, Tech, Richmond Academy, of Macon-Lanier.

This is just the first year for this. They had a tough time finding teams to play from Texas and from around the country. Look for this to get better in the next couple of years.
Here is how I see it going down.
Good chance Timberview get's beat by Buford GA. Timberview is droping down to 4A this year and has some good athletes. They have little history as the school is only been around 5 or 6 years. I see Buford winning this game.
Cedar Hill will beat Cincinatti La Salle- Opening game could keep it close for the first half. Cedar Hill has way to much talent!!
Justin NW will get beat by Ruston LA- You can count the number of times NW has made the playoffs on one hand. Ruston will be much more talented. Not sure if NW has ever won a playoff game.
Arlington Bowie will beat Trotwood-Madison OH- See Cedar Hill above
ET will beat John Curtis- ET has too much size and power. Great coaching don't hurt. Defending the old Houston Veer could be tough on ET early in the game.
Klein Oak will beat Manderville LA
Colleyville Heritage and Clovis East CA will be a good game. Heritage will win a close game.
Maybe next year all the teams from Texas and from around the nation will be better. Can't wait for this.
Does anyone know the date and time of Abilene vs Belle Glades FL? That will suck if I must make a choice to miss one of these games.

.
I can see Ruston winning against Justin NW....Ruston should be alittle better this year...I have no clue about NW....Just the info I've gathered here....That being said that's not a sure thing and I'm sure NW will be playing hard in this event....
John Curtis will be a tough beat for Trinity...Game will be tight all the way...I "think" John Curtis gonna be pretty good this year....Curtis need to plug some holes, but that's normally not a problem for them....Curtis lost some key people last year, BUT they got some big boys over there and they gotta couple RB's that will bust on the scene this year....
I can't remember the last time JC was just blown out.....JC played both West Monroe and Evangel Christian back when both of those schools won their "myth" national titles(2 of the best teams ever in Louisiana)....Evangel Christian beat JC 28-20 and West Monroe beat JC 25-10, I believe....
Mandeville and Klein Oak?....Hard for me to see Mandeville having the season they did last year....Mandeville always a pretty scrappy bunch though and they normally put out a good effort...I was looking at Klein Oak's roster from last year and it looks like they lost alot too....This game might be interesting as well....I'd give the edge to Klein Oak though...
Looking forward to these and all the games.....

With Clovis East's rushing game, we will find out real quick. Good warmup for other rushing teams on our schedule;)

I'm sure the game will be tougher than you think...
Ruston can be good... It remains to be seen what type of team Ruston fields this year...
I don't see a blow out either way...

For the Trinity fans....I'm assuming this game happens-will try to post some info on John Curtis as I see it....
Kenny Cain(RB) from John Curtis picked up his first offer-(Arkansas)...Alabama looking at him hard also...In my opinion Cain is a much better LB prospect...The way JT goes about things you can expect Kenny Cain to carry the ball 20-25 times against you all....

March 25, 2008
The University of Alabama has already had great success at John Curtis High School in suburban New Orleans with the signing of cornerback Robby Green, and another top star from the perennial powerhouse was in Tuscaloosa Monday as a surprise visitor. Running back Kenny Cain, a 6-foot, 205-pound bruiser, enjoyed some time away from home with friend and former teammate Green as the two took a quick trip to Alabama during their spring break.
Cain rushed for over 1,000 yards as John Curtis took home another state championship.
"Robby and I came up here and I am glad I got to come up here again," said Cain, who also visited the Capstone last summer for camp. "I thought practice went great. I watched the running backs and they looked real good and the coaches and players were upbeat and intense. It looked like a great atmosphere for players to keep getting better."
Cain battered his way to 1,122 yards and 15 touchdowns on 132 carries as a junior as John Curtis won the state Class 2A championship.
As a sophomore, Cain had 58 tackles and five sacks as a linebacker on yet another state championship squad. Despite that success and a still-growing frame, Cain insists his future is at running back.
"The Alabama coaches want to watch and see how big I get," said Cain. "They have been recruiting me hard, and I know they like big backs. My family will probably talk to the coaching staff soon to see where I stand with them.
"Robby doesn't talk to me too much about joining him at Alabama. He tries to give me advice about getting through the recruiting process. He stresses to me making good decisions and thinking things through without being rash. I know he is fired up about getting to Alabama and making an impact."
Cain recently picked up his first offer and expects more on the way.
"Arkansas offered me last week," said Cain. "That was a nice offer because I grew up watching them and really liking their running game. I am a big Darren McFadden fan and I know they will keep running the football with Coach (Bobby) Petrino. If anything, they are just going to be more explosive.
"Florida, Tulane and LSU are also recruiting me hard. I am supposed to go to Tulane's Junior Day on April 5, and this summer I will be coming back to Alabama for camp. I don't really have any favorites, and I actually grew up liking Florida State and not really any of the in-state schools so much."
Cain has been timed between a 4.5 and 4.6 in the 40-yard dash.

Longview popped him pretty good last year as did St James here...I expect Trinity to pop him pretty good as well.....When you run the type offense JC runs you are going to get popped pretty good sometimes....
Cain is a tough kid with a LB's mentality though-he'll be alright....He will be the head horse though-meaning unless JT put him back on defense he will be the guy...
John Curtis also got several other quality RB's that will be tough to deal with, I believe...They just pound it-that's all they do...
RB-Marchez Patterson 6 180 SR
RB-Dex Thibodeaux 5'10" 210 JR
RB-Stafford Jones 5'11' 185 SO...look for JT to get Jones in there somewhere :)

6' 175 lbs (Jr) this year...Starts in the secondary and returns punts and kicks...Alot of speed, but doesn't have brother Joe's football skills yet...
He could be a factor on special teams...He's a speedster....

I can testify how good John Curtis is, I look for them to give Trinity a battle. We know that when it comes to playoffs, it goes though River Ridge even though I think we can be pretty good next barring injuries. Hopefully we can get John Curtis at home next year at Rodney Duron stadium. I heard that ESPN U may televise the Labor Day games. It will be a great day for hs school football fans to watch.

I'm gonna go with fake punt call, I love Coach, we all do just the same but he's human. I don't care what anybody says 37 yards is not the same as 80 yards versus Youri Yenga and that defense. But no matter it's done, Southlake won fair and square, and thankfully we learned many lessons from that loss that served us last year and hopefully in the future :).

I am not sure if this means they are expanding the showcase, but if Summerville is being invited and all of the originally named 14 teams are still in, it would appear another Texas team would need to be added as well. I have seen very little on this event --- has anyone else? I would think if they want this to be an economic success they need to get some publicity out there.

I can't see any teams from S Carolina being added..first they'd have to invite 2 teams from SC then they'd have to find 2 Texas teams to play them, and most everyone here has their schedule set.

I can confirm it is Summerville (SC) that is being invited as I did speak with Summerville head coach John McKissick this morning. The sticking point for Summerville being added to the Texas Labor Day Showcase is that their current opponent for the same week in Conway finds another opponent. Conway, which is another state power in South Carolina at the 4A level, may have two teams in which they are looking into replacing Summerville.
But, Summerville has been invited to the Texas Showcase .. it just hinges on Conway finding another opponent which is a good possibility. And as the article states, Conway may also join the Showcase if Intersport can round up yet another team into the mix.

This appeared to be the case a week ago when it hit the Charleston area paper (See post #71 above). The question now is, have originally named teams, like Ruston, decided not to appear. If that is the case there would be room for two out of state teams.

How good will Klein Oak be this year?.....AND, Justin NW?.....
Don't believe I've ever heard too much about Justin NW...
Some info on Klein Oak for this coming season from the Rivals site.
Now, the Bears are targeting another athletic tight end prospect from that region of the country in Klein (Tex.) Oak High standout Jordan Najvar. Cal recently visited Najvar on his high school campus.
One of the first things you notice about Najvar when evaluating his skill set is the big man's ability to get down the field. With a reported 4.59 40-yard dash time, the 6-foot-6, 235-pound athlete is one of many threats on his talented Oak team.
Najvar is up to 19 offers
"Last year we went 10-2," Najvar said. "We got to second round and we got upset. We return 14 starters. 12 true starters. Two or three of the guys started three to five games. We already have five guys with D1 scholarships and five more juniors getting recruited."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Klein Oak returns about 14 starters with around 10 kids (Seniors/Juniors) that have D-1A offers from a team that went (10-2) last season.
