Don't know if anyone on here is a fan of Formula 1 racing, but I am anyway. The new season kicks of almost as I type with practice taking place for this weekend's Australian Grand Prix. Fun to see what kind of new multimillion dollar toys will be cruising around this year.

Count me as another F1 fan. I don't think anything counts as racing unless you turn both ways.;)
BTW, WP006, Patrick is an Indycar, not Formula driver.
As always, I'll be pulling for the boys driving the red cars with a prancing horse......

I'm a three-pointed star guy myself, so we get another fun season of rivalry.

They kinda look the same.....but there is NOTHING on God's green earth outside of 1st world military bases that can compare with F1 cars' tech.

Haven't followed it for a while. But there were some interesting rivalries and some interesting characters back in the 80's. Alain Prost's rivalries with both Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell. Those were fun. Of course, later on, it was all about Michel Schumacher. But like FB mentioned, Ferrari remains the one constant when talking about F1. Interesting paint jobs on some of those cars too. McLaren with the Marlboro colors, and of course Andretti's John Player Special. BTW, do they still allow those?

You have obviously never seen or, more importantly heard, an older classic Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix car from the 30s, or 50s (not the current McMercs) at full throttle. Especially driven by Fangio or Moss in the cars they made famous. Made me an instant fan of Mercedes-Benz racing.

Ferrari is the one with the Marlboro colors and sponsorship these days. The evil Italians spreading the smoking of American tobacco products around the world. :D McLarens-Mercedes vehicles are now painted in a chrome-colored paint with red trim in honor of the Silver Arrows of the 30s. Besides, silver is the traditional German color for Grand Prix, just as red is for the Italians. No one has seen the John Player Special all black in quite awhile; not even at Monterey.

Tobacco ads on the cars are banned everywhere in Europe. Ferrari still holds its deal with Marlboro and puts its ad on the cars where it can, like Bahrain. I understand that soon the ban will be at all venues.

Can't say I have had that pleasure.
I will say this....Enzo started making street cars to finance his passion for racing. There's no doubt that the current incarnation of the "scuderia" is much different, but the passion they have for racing still shines through.

While we're on the subject of European cars, I wonder why Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen etc aren't on the US roads. With gas prices going through the roof, I would have thought these excellent compact car makers can give the Korean and Japanese manufacturers a run for their money. Saturn did bring in the Astra which is European made (German/Belgian). Has some excellent reviews.

most of the time when foreign cars are brought to the states that take a lot of heavy modification to make them street legal. most manufactures respect the car for how it was made and refuse to change it in any way or form. Though very very few of these cars make it in the country in there original form.
when our country lightens up and loosens up a bit you may see some of those cars, but not any time soon.
I remember the John Player car. Really cool. I recall a six wheeled car that I made a model of.
That Ferrari may be one of the coolest looking cars ever. Wonder if the paint looks as good in the sun.
I would like to get into F1, but have a hard time. Weekend TV time is hard to come by and watching tape delay is even more difficult for me to do.

I hear you. I was in Europe one time and we drove this little Peugeot with a 1.1 litre engine. That little thing hauled a$$ on the Motorway. Amazing what a little car can do without California emission modifications.

Going to be an interesting year without traction control!
Also mentioned in the practice broadcast was a new body mandated for 09. I personally would like to see some of the little wings go away! But that's just me.

Sure makes it much tougher on the drivers during braking. I can only imagine at this point what Monaco is going to be like for them. Some multi-million dollar pile-ups probably await this season.

Out of curiosity, has anybody else been recruited from the Indy car circuit into one of the top F1 teams, since Michael Andretti? That didn't work out too well for McLaren as I recall.

For the record, it was CART, not Indy, but American open wheel racing never the less. The two "bodies" merge this year so it won't really matter, going forward.
Don't really remember anyone since Michael, (Eddie Cheever was one before) but maybe Marco will be the next.

Just to make a point, McLaren-Mercedes takes the Australian poll and third position, with a Williams BMW sandwiched between them. No Ferrari until 4th and the other in 16th. :D (I know this is something of a fluke for the horse guys, but it was simply too easy to point out the German powered cars on the front row.)
