I had the opportunity to tour the Garland ISD Special Events Center this morning. Very impressive.

Dr. Curtis Culwell, the GISD superintendent, and Tim Mabe, the Special Events Center director gave me the tour.

The LISD has included a Special Events Center in the bond issue proposed in May. I can see this being a real asset for our school district.

Are any other school districts looking at this, like Southlake Carroll perhaps?

Did the Garland ISD actually build this thing?? No, Carroll certainly has absolutely nothing planned along those lines whatsoever. Even if we wanted one, Robin Hood payments are on their way up again next school year for us, which would impact our ability to operate such a building.

Yes. They built it for $40 million from a bond issue in 2003. The center opened in 2005. The center makes an annual profit.

The Sp. Events Center is the pride of the school district... and as the word gets out, it's getting booked almost every weekend. Last weekend I took my youth group to a concert there - in past weeks it has hosted basketball playoff regionals, a large Christian youth conference, and at least two concerts.

I think Katy ISD has something similar.

One great thing is that it gives the GISD a place to hold graduations. Plenty of room and we dont have to drive halfway across the metroplex...:)

I understand that the Katy Special Events Center loses lots of money every year because it is not run properly.

The Garland Special Events center is a fantasitc place to watch High School basketball playoff games! I love the place. Not a bad seat in the house, easy parking.
