I would venture to bet Mustangs has got to be somewhere up there in the ranks of the most overused mascot names. I mean I can think of a dozen right off hand just in the greater Houston area.

Mustangs and Wildcats.

Tigers.

1. Mustangs
2. Panthers
3. Wildcats
4. Eagles

None are particularly good. Get creative, folks. The very best HS mascots are directly related to the town/school. Preferably they involve the local industry/agricultural product. Examples:

Roscoe Plowboys
Robstown Cottonpickers
Freeport/Brazosport Exporters

These are great mascots.

Other Texas All-Time greats:

Winters Blizzards
Hamlin Pied Pipers
Italy/Roma Gladiators
Hutto Hippos
Tom Bean Tomcats
Rotan Yellowhammers
Munday Moguls
Trent Gorillas

And number one....

Something most people may not know.

The Humble Wildcats is actually due to the city of Humble's History. (School opened in early 1900's, arguably the first to actually use the mascot Wildcat).

The school got its Mascot because of the oil industry. As some may know, Humble's oil wells were considered the largest in Texas at one point in time...and the way they discovered this oil was in fact, Wildcat Drilling...Which in essence is random drilling. The people that conducted this drilling, were called Wildcats...And the schools mascot was born.

Original, id say yes....

If they change their logo to something more oil-industry appropriate, I'll give 'em originality points. Till then, they are just another in a sea of "wildcats". My college mascot is wildcats, and it's not great either.

Same with the Wink Wildcats but those who drilled in West Texas were called wildcatters.

Hey, it doesnt change the fact that it had purpose... Its not like Aldine nimitz thats Mascot is a Cougar...Unless they have some kind of history of hot older women seeking out the younger man.

Grapevine is the Mustangs because of the Mustang Grapes they grow in the vineyards. A long time ago the mascot was just the Grapes with the colors of purple and gold, but was changed to the Mustangs with the colors being red and white.

Jaguars is a recent way overused mascot. They are everywhere in DFW. These were all added in the last 15 years or so.

Mesquite Horn
Mansfield Summit
Flower Mound High
Dallas Molina

There are more Eagles than anything else. 3a was overrun with Bulldogs awhile back but some of those have moved up.

If you are not at least 50 miles from the coast should you really be using Pirates. Wylie?? Mesquite Poteet??
