Trinity-Carroll 2006. The winner of that game was always going to win the state title, and there were 45,000+ people there at Texas Stadium, which is one of the largest attendances in the history of high school athletics.
The fact that Dodge lead that team to overcome a defecit and win at the last minute over a Trinity team that is one of the best football programs in the state the last 5 years is a truly magnificent fact. I was rooting for Trinity but Carroll was just awe-inspiring.
Second would have to be Carroll-Smithson 2004, with the last second kick to take the title.
My personal top game would be Jesuit vs Lake Highlands in 2004. There was a packed crowd at Wildcat Stadium, and Jesuit, in our first season of UIL play, were in an interesting situation where a win would give us a tie for the district title and the #1 playoff seed while a loss would have seen us miss the playoffs at 4th. Jesuit took an early lead in the first half but Lake Highlands led a furious fourth quarter rally to recover from down 21 to force overtime. Both teams scored on the first possession of overtime. The Jesuit defense stops LH on 3rd and 1 in the second overtime, and the kicker sends the field goal try wide left. The next play, Bryant Wilson hands off the ball to the leading rusher in the DFW area, Kyle McKissack, who runs 25 yards through a huge hole provided by the OLine to give Jesuit its first UIL district title and a memorable 48-42 victory.

The programs involved are the programs we expect to be in these types of games at that time of year. Too much history involved in each of these to deny there placement. With the run Carroll was on, no team had ever carried that kind of target before. The coaches involved are simply some of the best this state has ever known. The same can be said for many of the players. All were nail biters. All involved last second wins, whether by score or stop. All had massive swings in momentum. Some were for titles. Some were matchups of nationally ranked teams. All involved the probable state winners for each season. So, while I'm obviously a homer any series of games that features program that combined to win a total of 21 state championships speaks for itself.

I wouldn't say any of those, though I only saw some of them.
I'd say the 2004 State Quarterfinal: Clear Lake 35, Katy 34 (2OT)
This game was, clearly, one of the best I've seen on the HS level. CL and Katy went back and forth, the whole game. Great defensive stops, here and there, made it even better. It was, clearly, Clear Lake's best team.. since whenever.

Even tho we lost, I have to say it was Trinity/Carroll cause of the HUGE crowd. It also would have been a really great addition to our story and the end of the Dodge/SLC era. We woud like to believe that it would have been 3 straight for us.....and yes I know that is speculation but......
Trinity/Plano was as draining emotionally as any game I have ever attended, cause I could see a repeat from the year before. Whew!:Censor::mad:

Some of the better ones I've seen not mentioned
2004 Euless Trinity - Duncanville
Trinity won 39-32 in a fantastic football game. The speed on teh field for both teams that night was unreal. It was also the hardest hitting game I remember seeing over the course of 48 minutes. This game went back and forth with Trinity finally pulling away in the end..
2002 - Southlake Carroll/ Sam Houston
The Texans did everything right but win this game. It was marked by heavy drama at the end when the Sam fans will tell you they were robbed of the game winning TD. People sitting on the Texan side started fearing for their life. This was the first test that the Dragons had faced that season. They were severely outgained by Sam Houston but managed to hold on and win 19-16.
2001 Lewisville - Fossil Ridge
The Farmers came in on a 9 game win streat and top 10 ranking in the state. They had the number 1 defense in the metroplex and a top 10 offense averaging over 300 yards a game on the ground. They had speed all over the field and talent to boot. Their only loss came at the hands of Mesquite in OT to open the season. Fossil Ridge came in as the third place team from their district and had to beat Keller the previous week to secure their playoff spot. They were led by Zach Dahman and Michael Dupreist and they were lethal all afternoon. FR started out by taking a quick 14-0 lead but Lewisville like they had done all year managed to start moving the football. We were able to tie it at 14-14 after Michael Sampson raced 70+ yards for TD.
Trailing 23-20 with under a minute left, Lewisville faced a 4th and goal from the FR 2. Lewisville had been moving the football very successfully for the last 3 quarters and Coach Gage decided to go for the outrigt win instead of OT. The Panther D stepped up and stopped us on the 1 and won the game 23-20.

Leander vs Round Rock McNeil 2005
Game was played on a Monday night, because of all the Hurricane Rita evacuees coming into the area. Leander was down 28-7 with 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. Conservative play calling got McNeil into trouble and Leander would come back tying the score 28-28 with 30 seconds left on the clock. Each team would score in the 1st OT. In the 2nd OT McNeil attempted a FG and missed. Leander followed it up with a FG to win it 38-35 in 2OT's.

Trinity/Duncanville talk about a underrated game, I agree with your assesment. As for Southlake/Sam Houston it didn't surprise me they gave Carroll such a hard time that year, as they beat us in an overtime classic. Everybody remembers the Southlake/Lufkin from that year(and rightfully so) but that Sam team was as athletically talented on both sides of the ball that year as the come. That game probably helped Southlake weather the storm later in the year vs. Lufkin. Speaking of Lufkin I think we have a new record for the longest one of these threads have been up without a Pack fan mention 2001 ET/LP, lol. Some others from the 2000's Trinity file, 2004 Trinity/Irving a highly entertaining deul between 2 time metroplex rushing champ Jamal Evans and a then rising star in Dimitri Nance. And I'll also recomend the 2004 Trinity/Tyler Lee game part 1. It was much like the 2004 Trinity/Duncanville game except at a packed Pennington field and had a bizarre incident with all the lights going out except on the scoreboard that seem to spark the Trojans and home fans.

Agree with the first, not the second. I think because of Dodge's injury the game is viewed different. I'm not saying that is right or that Abilene didn't earn it's victory. I'm only saying that the perception is that game was tainted. It's the difference between the 04 game and the 07 game. Both games featured outstanding teams on both sides. One game goes down to the wire with the stars trading blows until the final whistle and makes the all time list. The other is a similar battle but one team loses it's all world quarterback after taking a solid to commanding type of lead and that game doesn't make the list. You just never want an all time type of contest to have been dramatically influenced by an injury, imo.

I bet it would be #1 if SLC would have won though. I thought it was a great game. Who would have thought that Carroll could would drive down the whole field, but then not exucute the easiest play in football? You cant write that kind of stuff.

It wouldn't make it to number one by any stretch of the imagination. Difference is the storyline of the game becomes different if Carroll converts at the end. The story then becomes one of a backup qb who steps in for an injured all state qb and, finding himself down with minutes to go, drives the length of the field for the win. I specifically write this scenario without reference to team or player to better illustrate how the situations make the game more or less historic, not the teams. Remove from your mind Carroll & Abilene. In their place insert a fictional team and just follow the storyline of the game. First the way it played out and then if the last second field goal gets attempted and made. That's what I'm arguing.

With pre-game hype, two prevailing state champions facing each other, with 53,000 in the stands and others that couldn't even get in the parking lot (thanks Texas Stadium), a one point outcome that might have gone either way, hard hits and tough defenses, the Trinity-Carroll game has to rank as the best game of the 00's thus far. This one was in a class by itself.

Trinity-Carroll 2006 ranks #2 on my list for this decade behind North Shore and Madison.
The drama didn't heat up on the field for Trinity-Carroll until the second half when Trinity was able to put some points on the board. It wasn't a particularly well-played game by either team until the second half. The defenses certainly had something to do with that, but it didn't hit a fever pitch until the second half.
The North Shore-Madison game from 2001 hit full throttle from the opening kick. The game finished 61-58...IN REGULATION. Now, you might see a score like that and think, did the defenses even get off the bus? Was anyone hitting? The answer to both is a resounding yes. This is the single most intense encounter I've ever seen at the high school evel. These were the #1 and 2 ranked total offenses in the state that year. Just unbelievable.
How about this year when Rowlett Upset Allen in the 1st Round, what a shocker, no one in the State saw that one coming, (Great -Game):)

Here is a summary of top players on each squad going off of memory...
Madison Marlins
QB Vince Young (I could probably just stop the post here)
RB Courtney Lewis (Texas A&M)
WR Benny Swain (Houston)
OL William Winston (Texas)
OL Tony Tella (Miami)
North Shore Mustangs
QB Willy Gaston (Houston)
RB Kevin Moore
RB Harrell Ester
WR Chad McCullar
Shore had 6-8 sophomores on this team, mostly on defense, who would form the leadership of the 2003 state championship team that some consider the best high school football team ever.
There are many more players for both teams I haven't listed and others can help out I'm sure.

Of course. You caught me on a rare unhungover Saturday. You have the advantage over me and it will make me sound like Dallas homer again. Of course I dont mind being labeled that seeing as to we play the best football in 5A here ;)
I just think that the stakes of the Carroll/Trinity game are unmatched. THe drama that unfolded is too. You had some offense generated from Trinity in the first half, a missed FG and a failed 4th down conversion I believe. You also had great defense throughout from both teams and the big play from the offensive side as well.
It's just hard to ever surpass the hype going into a game and the Trinity/SLC game did that in every facet, including the attendance. I don't ever remember two undefeated state champions squaring off that early in the playoffs to decide ultimately who the state champion was gonig to be.
I guess Skeeterville needs some love in an otherwise Dallas dominated State of HS football :D

the hoopla attracted a much larger crowd than would normally be expected for a rd 2 game(even kt2k). i don't really remember the madison game being anywhere near a statewide phenomenon, tho i'm sure it lit up houston. i wish i could have seem it, but i guess if i had to choose between the 2, i'll take the et-slc game, but go figure.
Madison-Shore was definitely more of a regional phenom. Young hadn't quite estalished himself on the statewide scale yet, but he took a major step towards that in the second round win over Katy (40-21).
Katy had beaten Madison the previous three seasons in a row in the second round, none of the games were particularly close either (98...Katy 27-7, 99...Katy 38-14...00 Katy 50-19). Vince started in both the 99 and 00 games, and he finally shook that one off as a senior.
He proceeded to launch into the Vinsosphere from the North Shore game onward.

Of course that 01 team was one of the weakest in th last 15 years. But still I have never seen a more dominent player. VY was there QB, Safety, punter. He was amazing and exciting to watch.

My only problem having the Madison/North Shore game as number 1 is that neither team was a defending state champion let alone both and the winner didn't go on to win a state championship. Also the longest winning streak at steak was 12 games to where the Trinity/Southlake game had winning streaks of 17 and 43 respectivaley.
Adding depth to the quality of an argument? Impressive, young Farmer, impressive.

If you weren't in that stadium to witness the culmination of all the hype, subplots and trash talking you just can't understand, fully.

To this day, there still hasn't been an offense go up and down the field on the Dragons the way the Texans did. Not to mention, Sam's defense was also hitting the Dragons in the mouth. Then-sophomore Aaron Luna was the hero for the Dragons that afternoon.

Funny thing about it, is that Sam went into the playoffs with a 5-5 record.
Oh, and I was also at that Sam/Trinity overtime thriller at Wilemon Field.

Oh yea, Tuna had a good game and Perry got way too conservative, inside the 20.
One more, the QB in green had a tough day connect with open receivers in round one and two. Not so much later!

Here is a summary of top players on each squad going off of memory...
Madison Marlins
QB Vince Young (I could probably just stop the post here)
RB Courtney Lewis (Texas A&M)
WR Benny Swain (Houston)
OL William Winston (Texas)
OL Tony Tella (Miami)
North Shore Mustangs
QB Willy Gaston (Houston)
RB Kevin Moore
RB Harrell Ester
WR Chad McCullar
Shore had 6-8 sophomores on this team, mostly on defense, who would form the leadership of the 2003 state championship team that some consider the best high school football team ever.
There are many more players for both teams I haven't listed and others can help out I'm sure.
An article about the game (http://media.www.dailytexanonline.com/media/storage/paper410/news/2005/11/30/Sports/Hometown.Heroes-1116059.shtml) (written a few years after)

That's a good point but the other side of the coin is maybe slc/et is so enduring even for those not associated with the teams or the metroplex because it wasn't defined by a out this world talents like that of VY and North Shore but rather more defined by the programs on the front of the jersey who perenially overachieve with less blue chips that people could relate themselves better to? Not trying to change your mind just throwing out a possible counterpoint.

I happened to be one of the close to 40,000 in "The Dome" in 2001 when Madison and North Shore lit it up. I happened to be in Houston that weekend visiting relatives, and I figured I'd go watch some football that day. YIKES!
I TRIED to go to the Carroll/Trinity game, but I didn't even make it to the parking lot so, I just listened on the radio.
I witnessed the drama between Sam Houston and Carroll back in 2002, and 2 weeks later, I saw Carroll come back and defeat a VERY GOOD Arlington High team.
But my favorite of this decade, is not a 5A game.
In the second round of the 2001 3A-D1 playoffs, All American sprinter DaBryan Blanton and the number 1 ranked Forney Jackrabbits bumped heads with the number 2 ranked Everman Bulldogs at Pennington Field on a cold Novermber night. For you Carroll fans that witnessed the classic matchup y'all had against Vernon in 1992 at Pennington (which I also witnessed), the Everman-Forney matchup was right on par with it.
With major drama in the 4th quarter, the Forney Jackrabbits faced a 4 and inches on the Everman 19 yard line. Blanton had already gained over 180 rushing yards against a great Everman defense, and EVERYONE in the stadium just knew that Blanton would get the ball on a sweep and outrun the Everman defense to the corner. To everyone's surprised, the Forney QB took the snap and handed the ball to the fullback, but, the Everman defense just happened to be looking for it, and threw the fullback for a loss and ended the game by running out the clock. Game over and Everman wins 21-17!
Just like the '92 Carroll/Vernon game, the '01 Everman/Forney game had people standing in both end zones, and basically both sidelines.

You ain't lying! Sam also had 2 good running backs in #22 Paul Baker and #5 Omarr Johnson, and a host of recievers. And the defense, like you said, was just outrageous.
Although, I don't know where Sam's defense was against Abilene High that year. I'm thinking that they left it back in Arlington as they were beat down 58-13. The Eagles gave the Texans that beatdown 2 weeks after your Trojans lost to them in overtime.

Agreed! Funny thing about "the slowest linebacker running down the fastest QB", that particular run on that particular play, was an outstanding run as the QB (Devin Williams) had dodged about 6 or 7 different tacklers on his way to the goal line. Had he not gotten stripped, it would've been about a 35 yard TD run.

I agree! Everman's defense that year was one of the fastest in all classifications, and whenever Blanton touched the ball, the Everman defense would, literally, start running ALMOST backwards at a 45 degree angle. NO EXXAGERATION!

I know they were surprsing schitzo for such a talented team. But one thing that had a tendecy to bring them down was they didn't protect the football that well. Another guy who was cold was James Swinton from the year before. We played Sam the year before I've seen few backfields with as much jukes as Williams and Swinton. There was one maybe 2 or 3 plays were they juked everybody on our D at least once, Thank GOD we had some guys in pursuit. Not to mention Kenny Perry with Sam back then was one of the first teams I recall running a spread option type offense. That's a host of reasons while Bowie w/ Kenny Perry will never have to worry about Trinity overlooking them should our paths cross again.

I remember Swinton...wore number 1. I was also at that first round game the year before the OT classic, when Johnathan Jackson and Chupee Joe ran thru, and around Sam Houston's defense.
And, you're right about Sam not being able to hold onto the ball. That was probably the main thing that cost them the district title in 2002, when they lost to Arlington High in OT, and lost to Lamar by a touchdown.

DeSoto vs. Hebron 4 OT's in the 2nd round of the playoffs would be one of the best games you have ever seen in your life, if you saw it.
The setting, the weather, the teams, and the unbelievable play was classic and memorable.
It was one of those games that you thought might never end and it wasn't because either side had an offense or defense that wasn't clicking.
Both sides wanted the win and did everything to get it.
6 or 7 OT's wouldn't have surprised me. Fortunately, it was only 4.

Just for the record, folks (myself included) were calling the Madison-Shore game the best they'd ever seen before Vince even took a snap at Texas. So, this definitely isn't one of those deals where people are hyping that one up just because of what VY has done since.
I believe North Shore was actually the AP #1 ranked team in the state when that game was played. If not, they had to be top three.
North Shore scored 625 points in 13 games that year (48 ppg). Madison scored 754 points in 15 games (50 ppg). Two explosive teams clashed, and the game more than lived up to the billing.
Again, as far as single games are concerned, I don't know how you top something like this. I don't expect to see anything like that again. That's just my opinion.
