He's one that Texas is going after early. Mack Brown has always had good luck in Arizona and this is a very weak year for DEs in Texas.

Rather see him at Texas than USC....I know we ain't much of a chance....

Kid looks like the real deal.....

He has OU interests, read an interview he did on Rivals. Probably USC bound though.

Im pretty sure he'll be at USC. Pete Carroll is a magnet for any talent even remotely near California

February 14, 2008-small piece from the article...

"Earlier this week, it was the name of cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick that was discovered to be a Texas target. It now looks like you can add another five-star prospect to the mix.

Defensive end Devon Kennard, a playmaking prospect out of Phoenix (AZ) Desert Vista, has been conversing with Longhorn assistant coach Bobby Kennedy, and the Rivals100 member indicated that the Texas staff has extended an offer.

"I've been talking and looking at Texas for a little while," said Kennard. "They wanted to get their 2008 class signed, but a day or two after that, coach Kennedy let my brother know that they were offering.

"That's a big deal. That's a pretty big offer. I love Texas. I'm honored. I really appreciate it to be honest. I know they don't offer very many that early. I'm glad to be one of them."

The 6-foot-4, 238-pound Kennard has visited the campuses of Arizona State and Southern Cal, and there have been early reports that have those to schools as his early leaders. However, Kennard said he has yet to formulate an actual list of favorites, and he's keeping his options open at this early stage."

Our odds are probably better with Dre. Muschamp and Applewhite were on him before the ink on their contracts dried. Hopefully Kenard will look at the fact that Texas will have to replace Orakpo and Aaron Lewis after this season, so his odds of coming in and playing as a true freshman are very good.

You think Brown has changed his stance some?....Going after some of the national recruits, OR, is this a one time deal....Texas just hasn't been known to throw offers around too much outside of Texas...

This is standard operating procedure for Mack. He will go OOS for positions he feels are weak in state. DE for example is weak for this next class. Texas is going hard after, and will likely get Alex Okafor from Pflugerville, but outside of him, there is not much DE talent in state... especially players that can play the quick side in college. This is also not a strong year for CBs, especially those that are good fits for a cover 2 scheme. That is why they are looking at Kirkpatrick. In fact, Texas has evaluated about 11 CBs for the class of '09 (most don't have offers) and of those 11, 5 are OOS.

Texas' depth chart will be pretty appealing at DE for 2009. Both likely starters for 2008 are going to be seniors, so playing time will go to whomever wins it. Also, we didn't take a single DE in 2008, the class immediately ahead of him, so he's not competing for playing time with somebody with more tenure, except those that are also going to be graduating in the next year or two.

Kennard is definitely a beast. But I'm glad you mentioned Texas is pushing hard for Okafor because it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he made end-of the-year 5-star status because as you mentioned all around it's looking like a weak year for elite ends.

Just because there is a weak year for a position doesn't mean they'll bump the #1 player at that position to a 5 stars.

Interesting little nugget of info about Kennard courtesy of Orangebloods... the brother of Texas TE Blaine Irby (who will be Texas' starting TE this season) is one of Kennard's high school coaches. Kennard and Irby have been in close contact for some time and Kennard is considering taking his official visit to Texas for the Spring game.

Look at #1 players for different positions, not all of them are 5 stars.

Still think he's a USC guy since he's being illegally recruited by them

I wasn't suggesting Okafor would make 5 star only because the position was weak. In fact I didn't even say he would make 5 star, I said it wouldn't surprise me if he did!

How about Barkevious Mingo? That's a strong candidate for greatest name ever.

I don't know for sure, I'm just poking fun at USC since they seems to be the center of attention when it comes to recruiting violations, like Joe McKnight last year.
