View Full Version : Judson You're Fired!

I figured I'd give them their own thread because I know SO MANY of you guys are keenly interested in knowing if I would fire them or not. I guess the bright side is I picked the right year to not watch them play. Needless to say, I would be quite upset if I was watching the games.
26-5A is a tough district, but not to the extent that Judson should and might be a 6th place team this year.
I guess there MIGHT be some scenario where they could get in the playoffs with a 4-3 district record, but it doesn't matter because they're not playing like Judson should play.

Dude, come on this is his first season. They hired him cause they want his offensive techniques. Coaching changes take time. Give him a few years at least. Heck, people wanted Gary Gaines to go after his first year last I remember....Gibbs was gonna be the first coach ever to get fired before winning one game but ended up making it to the Superbowl and winning it.
Give the coach time.

Let me just preface my future comments by saying that I believe Madison is a better football team than Judson and that I dont really believe that officials win or lose games. Ok here I go. But I do believe that officials INFLUENCE the outcome of some games. As a fan of High School football I was INSULTED tonight. I have never in my life made a comment about officials and it kills me to say anything right now. But for the sake of those kids at Judson who busted their butts tonight I feel like I must say something. The personal foul calls for late hit out of bounds were bogus. The 4th and 8 play for a touchdown in the 3rd Q was a catch but did anyone see Travis Houston #8 get tackled as he was about to sack the QB? How about the bogus fumble call when Judson was making a comeback? I thought the tie goes to the runner or the receiver? Housler and Terrel both had it in the endzone. So how can you say Terrel had the interception? And this is just the beginning. I could go on and on and on. Coach Streety said it best, " It was just our night" You can say that alright. Look Madison has a good football team. But this was insulting. They dont need this much help. Now let me get to the most important thing. I have never been more proud of a group of kids in my life. Judson's players, coaches and fans showed me something tonight. Even with a loss, the Judson players are winners in my mind with their effort. They have every reason to mail it in. I believe 13 starters are either hurt, failed or kicked off the team. They have a DB playing Nose Guard. After last weeks loss where we all questioned the Rockets I think we can say Judson hasnt gone anywhere. And I could care less about the loss. Judson players and coaches should be commended. I believe Carl Bouldin made a huge step forward tonight. This is his team for next year. I was impressed even in the loss. He isnt where he needs to be but he is headed in the right direction for next season. And it is also nice to see all of the Rocket die hards in action. I think the best thing that has happened this year is that we have weeded out all of the bandwaggoners. The Rockets dont need you. I havent seen a Judson crowd this fired up in a few years. It was nice to see. Sure we are all dissappointed but the kids played their tails off tonight. Madison didnt see the Judson team that started off the year. But they still saw alot of heart. I have more to say but I need to get going so I will finish later. As I leave I would like to apologize to Jim Streety. I have called that man every name in the book about being unsportsmanlike. But tonight he could have piled on and he didnt. And I respect him for that. Go Rockets. It is nice to see that the kids still believe.

The Judson fans did do much better, considering especially the cheerleaders once again didn't bring the sound system with them and were left having to use those dumb-looking cones to yell through. I thought the crowd (and I'll include myself here, since my voice has been rendered practically useless for the next several days, because of all the noise I was trying to make in backing up the cheerleaders and at other times contributing some new rhymers of my own I was trying out for the fun of it). I sure wish there was a way to maybe gin up some money to get a better sound system for the cheerleaders and one that is apparently more portable than the one they've used the last three years so they have a better chance of getting it hooked up for road games as was the case in the past, because I really felt sorry for them down there doing their best under very difficult circumstances.
Concerning the game, I'm going to consider the performance by the team a potential moral victory. The offense did seem to be clicking a little bit better than in recent weeks. Is it possible that the offense actually is turning the corner, at least as far as putting things in place for next year?? As for the apparent bad calls, usually I can have a much better idea as to whether they seemed that way to me or not, but I was so busy trying to make noise and still watch the plays, down markers and clock that I can't really say one way or another just how questionable some of them were. Nevertheless, it does seem odd that so many people feel like there were some questionable calls, and I do find it hard to believe that so many people could have been suffering from a common delusion of some sort.

I thought Tony Franklin was going to have a heart attack tonight. He was beside himself. It was pretty bad. Honestly, the worst I have seen. I hate to say these things because it makes me look like a sore loser. But I am not a sore loser. Madison is the better team right now. Scoreboard is all that matters. But it would be hard for anyone to tell me the game wouldnt have been a little different had the officiating been appropriate. It truly was bad. But congratulations to the Judson kids anyways. I am proud of you.

Madison played an outstanding 3rd quarter which was the difference. Refs blew two major calls: the fumble and a pass interference call. I loved it wehn one ref pointed to the other , then that ref pointed back to the other ref a few seconds later. Rockets did well considering they had 9 starters missing for the game. Not to take anything away from Madison who played excellent ball control in the 2nd half, but not many teams can play very good football with that many starters missing. Good luck to the Mavs the rest of the way. Look for SV to win next week. SV defense is just too tough and they find a way to win.

I'll agree with your assessment. I'll admit I have not been as patient as I should be this year, especially with the coaching. But I do agree that Judson should be improved next year and should make a return trip to the PO. It's hard to lose talent and coaches and still compete in a district as strong as 26-5A. The returning players will have 1 season undere their belts with this new system. Go Rockets!!

lonny, don't take this the wrong way because it's not meant as a kick when you're down, but there was a really interesting article in the Express-News today. I tried to find it online for you but I don't see a link to it. It's from their "From The Archives" series and I only bring it up because I think you'll find some humor and irony in it.
It recapped the 1975 29-4A race which ended in a wild last two weeks that resulted in a 4 way tie between San Marcos, Mac, Seguin, and Roosevelt that had to be resolved by the tiebreaker back then which was a series of coin flips which Mac won. Other district teams were Sam Houston, Highlands, Judson, and the eighth was not named.
Anyway, the only mention of Judson was, "...Roosevelt walloped last place Judson 42-6.." I mention it because it was interesting how things were on the verge of changing for several of those schools, particularly Judson which soon sky-Rocketed to sustained dominance. Some of those schools changed for the better, some for worse, and some never seem to change much.
Wonder what the SA power landscape will look like in another 15-20 years. Will some current doormat rise to the perennial power like Judson did? And what will Judson, SV, Clemens, Madison, etc have become by then?

My question is why did it work better when he was at Madison? Did they have better talent and win as much despite him or did they get used to him? Did he somehow forget how to coach?
Or did he go to Judson to sabotage them?! :p

I appreciate all the comments and that's reassuring. I didn't know they were missing 13 starters. Nobody overcomes that. I'm almost as proud of Judson for beating Roosevelt in the cold in 2003 after the Madison game as I was the year before when they won state. I was going to be real disappointed if Rocket Pride was no longer around. That's on the coach to instill and I didn't think Rackley would come off of that just because most of the staff left.
Rocket Pride is associated with winning, but that's wrong. It's really about playing fair with good sportsmanship and playing to the end of the game regardless of the score. Rocket Pride means always playing hard and never giving up. As long as Judson does that, they'll have a chance to win when they have good talent.
Judson will win the next 2 games and go 6-4 on the year.

1975 was the last time Judson had a losing record. They were new in 4A and were always able to build up momentum in the program under each class. They never had 5A growing pains.
I don't see Lee rising. Reagan could do it. Churchill and MacArthur will always have a chance to rise up. It all depends on the Madison and Roosevelt talent each year.

Have the Judson fans lost all faith in their program? I was surprised that Judson did not fill up the stands. The diehards that did show up were very into the game. It use to be that Madison/Judson would sell out at either stadium.

I think at the very least that this will help shake out the deadwood that was creating the kind of crowd-related inertia that made it progressively difficult in recent years to get the crowd going the way they used to in providing uniquely-effective manifestations of Judson spirit that especially existed at the beginning of its long run in 1977 and for nearly 15 years thereafter.

If they make it, they make it, but they haven't played to Judson standards and just making the playoffs in Judson land is not a great feat. You need to win when you get there and they don't look like a playoff-winning team right now.

Jerry Comalander the football staduim is named after him. He is legendary.
He won one State Title I believe....he was also good friends with Virgil T. Blossom......they were driving through the woods one day with Blossom driving when Blossom pulled over and they both got out and Blossom said "It's going to be here"....years later, that area developed into what is now called the Blossom Athletic Center with Jerry Comalander Football Stadium and Jimmy Littleon Gymnasium.
Just a story....

A meaning of Rocket Pride means to work and work, grab and claw and not quit until that last possible moment in time because you never know you might capitalize on a mistake that will make you a champion.
I didn't say they should give up - I just said it'd be hard for them to go to the playoffs.

Others practicing Rocket Pride under other names
1) Winston Churchill in his "we shall never surrender" speech
2) CONUS in its more difficult but ultimately finer moments
3) Moses trusting that the solution to a big jam would come in time when he was stuck on the beach with several thousand people *****ing at him for bringing them out there
4) NASA at its best, especially in situations like Apollo 13 (a literal version of "rocket" pride)
5) "Rocky," especially in the original and also ROCKY II
I especially like 5) because Balboa didn't even win in that first one, but he stuck it out and rose up to fight (and win) another day. Sort of like my Rockets since 1977. They wouldn't always win the final game of the season (however long that season may last), but they would arise to play another game and, win or lose, "save their name from disgrace and shame." I'll never forget how "Rocky" came out and was widely seen especially in the spring and summer of '77. I saw it on July 29 that year at FSH Theater #2 (I think it was #2 at the time), just weeks before Judson began its emergence. Not knowing for sure how successful we would be although I felt we would win at least a few more games than we did before Coach Sanders came earlier that spring, I thought, after seeing the movie, it would be really cool if Judson could do something nearly as inspiring or heart-tugging. Indeed , four months later, we were the "Judson Rocky's" all around the San Antonio area. The "Rocky" song came out just at the right time for Judson. It's for this reason that the Mighty Rocket Band would play "Rocky" to help get the team motivated, well after most other bands had long since "graduated" to "Eye of the Tiger." I'll never forget how, in the Quarterfinal Game with Churchill in 1982, Churchill was out to prove that the 14-0 win (familiar score, albeit revresed, huh?) in week 7 was a fluke. Churchill, leading 7-3 deep into the fourth qtr and with nearly a 3-1 advantage in yardage (Judson had 60 yards total offense at that point and zero passing yards) was moving into Judson territory for what looked to be a knockout blow, and Judson recovered a fumble to the tune of "Rocky" at the Judson 35 yd line, which the Band started playing only 1 or 2 plays earlier when it looked like things were starting to head "south." On the second play (first play got one yard) Dear sent a 63 yard TD pass play for JJ Lewis down the sidelines, and Judson wins 10-7 for their second "fluke" with Churchill.
Then, just two years ago in the final game of the season with Roosevelt, TR just scored to break a 14-14 tie to start the 2nd Half. On Judson's first time on offense to start the 2nd Half, the Rockets fumbled, the Riders recovered, at the Judson 30 yard line, and they immediately went to work for a potential knock-out blow that would put the Rockets in a 14-point hole. At that point, Rocket Band Drum Major Linda Santiago, deciding she and her fellow Band members had seen enough, took matters into her own hands by launching the Band into a millennial version of "Rocky." Halfway through the song, Judson recovered a TR fumble, and only a few plays later scored, totally turning the game around and the "Rocky's" went on to win 24-21 Rocket win. For one of the few times in several years the Rocket Band singlehandedly perhaps saved the day. That was one of the few times the Band had played "Rocky" in several years, and to my knowledge that's been the last time since. We could have used it in Houston last year, and on three different occassions this month, at the very least.

Yep, you play until the end. Otherwise, Judson would have a few less titles.

Why don't you post more? You have great posts because you've been a fan for so long. I loved that TR game because that was real Rocket Pride to me. It was real cold and Judson was in the midst of a disappointing season and basically playing for pride the week after the worst game I've ever had to watch in person.

Everybody called for it and I finally did it when they fell to 2-3 in district and I didn't envision Churchill losing their way out of the playoffs. My tune got better during the thread and I hired the Rockets back before the Reagan game.

It's so funny..........going from life support and hoping that other teams lose to get into the playoffs..................to a state title game. If Judson wins next week, Disney should make a movie about this years Rockets. One of the best comeback stories of the year is unfolding right before our very eyes and ears. Go Rockets.

That's why I went back to post all this stuff!:D
