Rivals Star System....Really hard on my brain sometimes....
2 WR's both signed by the same school this year..(Miami-Fla)
Travis Benjamin(Florida, Belle Glade Glades Central)....4 Stars (5-11 141 lbs)... 4.4 forty...Probably can't bench his weight...
http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=54083
LaRon Byrd (Louisiana, Hahnville)....3 Stars (6-4 205...4.46 forty)....

What I think?....If you are from Florida you get an extra star, maybe two....

jtk saw the kid from Glades Central last Summer during 7 on 7. He is for real. Don't let his size fool you because he has the frame to add 30+ pounds easily. He was just one solid lean muscle and apparently he is that way because he runs a lot of track and has never participated in an offseason S&C program. He is a playmaker though and jtk has no problem with him being a 4 star.
As for the other kid, the first major difference that jtk saw is level of competition. The Florida kid has played with and against much, much better talent than the Louisiana kid. That will play a large roll.

I agree with you most of the time, but I gotta respectfully disagree with you on this one....
Hahnville plays in one of the toughest districts we got here...You talking about:
Destrehan (5A Title winners this past year)
Hahnville
Dutchtown
East St John
St Amant
East Ascension
The Talent in this district in my opinion is as good as any around (ok, I'm a homer)...If I had to name all the big time kids from this district it would take me a pretty long while(trust me) ....
Mark it down....The Hahnville kid will be playing in the NFL....

Glades Central is only a 3A jtk believes, but look at the number of players they and the rest of their district have sent to college and the NFL. The Lake Okeechobee area is loaded with sick talent. A concentration of which jtk would put up against the absolute best in Louisiana and the best in most states.

That's not my debate...
LaRon Byrd is my debate....
He will be in the NFL, the other 141 pounder will be lucky to see much playing time at Miami....:D
I've seen Glades Central play a couple times on TV....To be honest doesn't look that much different to what we have right here....In fact each time I saw them play they lost....

I'm certain that one guy doesn't decide the rankings the all Rivals 250+ kids. I believe Rivals has a small amount to do with what players initial ratings are. The college recruiting community + local community have a lot to do with what a player is ranked from the beginning.
Take a look at the Texas recruiting list this year. A Horn alum should have helped us out and added a few more stars. :D

Rivals rated Trindon Holliday "3 stars" awhile back.....
Height 5 ft 5
Weight 160 pounds
That's about right....Could have really been a 2 Star...Just being honest....
Trindon pretty fun to watch, but his future ain't in football....Every time he take a hit I cover my eyes up...
Just like this Travis Benjamin...141 pounds?...Come on....Trindon a world class sprinter at that..
What is Benjamin gonna do at 4.4?...He gonna get some broke bones-that's what...

Rivals divides the country into 4 sections and they have a couple of people assigned to each section. Those are the people that actually come up with the initial rankings. The rest are averaged out. It is true that some small school guys don't get as much attention, but that is only because there are fewer chances to see them and less tape. Contrary to what the tinfoil hate idiots will have you believe, there is no school conspiracy.

You also have to understand that height will hurt a kid's "star status" a lot more than weight. The Florida WR is 5'11 and can easily put on weight. Holliday is going to have a hard time growing 5 inches. Look at Texas LB Rashad Bobino. Many who saw him play said he was one of the best LBs in the Houston area, if not the state, but he was only 5'9 coming out of high school and because of that, Rivals gave him just 2 stars.

5'11 ain't nothing to jump up and down about for a WR...If this kid puts on 20 lbs that puts him at 5'11 and 161....Still with 4.4 speed it's nothing really special this day in time....
I understand what you are saying though...
Holliday is not really a WR ...He was recruited as a RB/ATH...

Rivals is for some sort of barometer for me, nothing more.
Jocques Crawford was considering Tech and he wasn't listed in the top 25 JuCo prospects.
he commits to Kansas, now he's the 16th ranked player.
It's rediculous.
I can't remember if it was Rivals or Scout, but they told Tech commit Terry McDaniel that he never received an offer frrom Lester at LSU and that he was faking LSU's interest. Then his dad faxed them a copy of the offer letter...
I read them for info, never as a reference.

I believe there is, not that it has any material effect. See the note on Jocques Crawford..kind of makes the case doesn't it. i've seen it time and time again when a player commits to Tech when the next revisions come out, they'll be ranked lower. The opposite happens when a kid commits to Texas , USC, or OSU. Like i said, it's simply opinion, so it's irrelevant once the ref blows his whistle, but don't act like it doesn't happen, because it does.

I read them for info, never as a reference. The LSU Rivals louse kept saying LSU never offered McDaniel and would change his profile everytime Tech put an LSU offer on there. It was all because McDaniel said he wouldn't go to LSU. As soon as they proved LSU made an offer, he went from 2 to 3 stars.
Jocques Crawford went from 3 to 4 stars and #49 to #16 about the time he decommitted from Tech. In his case,he had good running stats to justify 4 stars, but it still always seems fishy.

The flipside of all those rankings is it helps Tech keep a chip on their shoulder and all the Aggie fans among others are always forced to ask, "How can they beat us? We're better than them!":D
I bet Cornelius Douglas doesn't play like a 3-star for Tech and those other guys don't either!:D
How about this one? Garrett Gilbert got a 5th star last week and even the guys on Red Raider Sports said tonight he's expected to commit to Texas. The stars help feed the monster of subscribers from the big name colleges.
Yes, people from all over are in on the stars and the team sites put in plugs for star ratings, but it is true that Bobby Burton is a UT grad and the boss at Rivals.

Gilbert got a 5th star because he should have had one all along. He also got his 5th star after his junior season was evaluated. Gilbert is widely considered the best QB prospect to come out of Texas since Matthew Stafford.
BTW, slorch, the notion that a kid commits to Tech and his stars drop while a kid commits to Texas and his stars rise is all in your head. Look at John Chiles who went from a 5 star to a 4 star after committing to Texas. Same happened to Dan Buckner this year who Rivals initially had as the top WR in Texas. He puts up good measurables at the Summer camps and has another monster season and his stock, according to Rivals, has been falling for a year now. Look at Aaron Williams. Rated the best safety in the nation, but couldn't get a 5th star and the main reason is because Rivals tends to back off evaluating kids that are early commits.
jtk could go on and on and on. Look at Blake Gideon who was the 5A defensive POY and couldn't even earn a third star despite unreal production and great measurables. DeSean Hales lost a star after committing to Texas. Two years ago, Jevan Snead is a 4 star. He commits to Florida and gets a 5th star. After he decomitted and committed to Texas, he lost that 5th star. The numbers of example are too many to list and there have been far more kids lose "stock" after committing to Texas than gain and the reason is always the same. Texas has most of it's class wrapped up by the Summer. Because of that, Rivals doesn't evaluate those early commits quite as much and tends to favor uncommitted players simply because they are constantly evaluating those players. That's why Rivals is a good tool, but you have to take it's rating rather generally and can't get too caught up in the details.

All three think that Rivals treats their recruits unfairly. The Texas fans complaing that a$m can get anyone in(mainly this is reserved for ou though) and the a$m fans complain about the same thing in Austin.
Texas fans feel like their commitments are not ranked higher because they commit early.

USC fans think their recruits are not as highly rated because everyone is jealous of Pete Carroll and loves ND.

There was a great article posted yesterday about the class of 2004 5-Star recruits, and where they would rank today. Only a very few maintained the 5-Star status after a few years in college. Several of them dropped to 2.5 or less stars when pitted against other D1 talent.
The stars serve as a guide, but in no way reflect what's going to happen once these kids get to campus and start to develop (or not) their game.

I totally agree. I have been members at Notre Dame, A&M, Texas, and Texas Tech on Rivals and everyone seems to think they are getting shafted. Here is the 2004 5* and my comments:
1. Adrian Peterson-he's done ok for a traitor
2. Ted Ginn Jr.-PIcked in top ten in the draft right?
3. Early Doucet-Freshman AA-top 5 WR prospect in this draft
4. Rhett Bomar-took the $$-but was started at ou as a freshman
5. Keith Rivers-AA @USC-prjected top ten pick in this draft
6. Willie Williams-head case transferred to Louisville and kicked out I think
7. Brandon Williams-picked in 3rd round last year, playing in NFL
8. Derrick HArvey-Skipping SR year projected first round in this draft
9. Jeff Schweiger Jr.-Playing at USC, don't know much more than that.
10. Xavier Lee-Never quite made it at QB at FSU-trying to go pro, good luck w/that
11. Demario Pressley-Good career at NCST-projected 3-4 round in this draft
12. Anthony Morelli-Started at PSU-not real good
13. Chad Henne-Four year starter at Michigan-projected 1-2 round in this draft
14. Kyle Williams-PLayer at Purdue, but couldn't stop beating women
15. Chris Patterson-Grade fall out at ou(go figure) went juco and I think is at KStaste
16. MAtthew Tuiasosopo-laying pro baseball
17. Cam Colvin-Played at Oregon-probably not drafted this year
18. Frank Okam-4 yr player-2 year starter at TX-projected 4 round in this draft
19. Fred Davis-best TE in this draft-proj around #20
20. Jeff Byers-Too hurt all the time
21. Lance Leggett-See Cam Colvin and substitute Miami
22. Xavier Carter-Won 4 National Titles in Track and now is a track pro
23. Thomas Herring-SAt out because of grades and then blew out a knee
24. Dan Connor-Bednarik winner-projected top 15 pick in this draft
25. Brian Toal-Sat out 07 as a redhirt after injuring shoulder, will play next year
From this list of 25 you have
3 in the NFL already
6 projected in first two rounds of this draft
2 projected 3-4 round picks of this draft
That's 11/25.
At least two incompletes. Bomar still has a shot, as does Toal
You have two players that went pro in other sports.
That's 11/23 or potentially 13/23 in the pros

Notre Dame pulls in this year all these 4 and 5 STAR kids....Truth is...Those kids Notre Dame racking up this year ain't much different than what anyone else is getting.....BUT, you would think with the hype Notre Dame gonna be winning national titles left and right-won't happen....
Notre Dame WR commit Deion Walker went from the #5 receiver to the #25 best WR in the nation only because he did not play in the Under Armour game due to injury. Every team gets shafted in recruiting by rivals. Ethan Johnson was a monster on the field and all of those numbers were taken his sophmore or junior year. He didnt play senior year due to injury. I admit rivals makes a lot of mistakes there are sooo many kids out there and this is the best tool we have.
Anyone finishing in the top 15 of recruiting classes did a great job. Some of these players will get hurt, fail out(not qualify), transfer, or get kicked out. I have seen it all with Charlie Weis's 1st recruiting class. Over a 1/4 of his first class is already gone because some of those reasons.
I am really excited about ND's class this year because we actually filled our needs unlike last years class when we forgot about defense....but I guess should be dissapointed since it is the most overrated class of all:rolleyes:

Time will tell...
Lets see who does better with their high-powered classes...
Nick Saban (Bama) vs Charlie Weis (Notre Dame)....
I'll put money on Saban...:)
Sorry!

This thread looks like I'm a big Hahnville fan/supporter or something...(lol)
I'm really a Rummel man...:D
I know the Hahnville program pretty well though having played against them several times and them being so close to me in Nawlins'....They take it serious just as alot of schools do everywhere...
Thought maybe couple of them might have got slighted.....Long as they are going to school, getting an education and playing some ball what's a dang "star"?...
Silly me sometimes...

Tell that to the Miami Dolphins who decided to spend a #9 overall pick on similar measurables.

because you dismiss the point as imaginary, but when the premise is documented and you tell me it's just coincidental...well... you're wrong.
For every example he gives to say that bias doesn't exist, there are a lot more where it does exist. It's not a Texas thing. They play that star game with other colleges, too. I say it's a business decision that the schools who have the most fans throwing down money on Rivals gets more stars to get more fans on Rivals. It's just like Texas Football.

I have been a Premium membe if several Rivals siets including the Texas, USC, and a$m sites.
All three think that Rivals treats their recruits unfairly. The Texas fans complaing that a$m can get anyone in(mainly this is reserved for ou though) and the a$m fans complain about the same thing in Austin.
Texas fans feel like their commitments are not ranked higher because they commit early.
a$m fans think their commitments would be ranked higher if they were recruited by Texas.
USC fans think their recruits are not as highly rated because everyone is jealous of Pete Carroll and loves ND.
Fans like to ***** and whine, and everyone can point to exceptions. It appears to me that things are handled relatively fairly accross the board. All I know is that Mike Leach and staff must be awesome coaches, Texas A&M must've had a LOT of bad coaches, or Rivals has always done a bad job of rating A&M and Tech recruits because there isn't any college that overachieves their recruiting more than Tech and no college that underachieves their recruiting more than A&M.

That's 11/23 or potentially 13/23 in the prosI don't care who gets drafted. All I care about is who produces while they're in college. The Rivals stars system focuses more on who will one day get drafted than they focus on who will produce in college. People like Crabtree should be 5-stars for production sake regardless of what their pro merit is.
A 5-star talented WR that plays in a running offense might as well be a 2-star kid because he'll never produce while on campus. In Lonny's book, you're not a 5-star player if you don't produce 5-star results in college. Not all 5-star talents are 5-star players.
I count 4 real good college players in that group (Peterson, Doucet, Henne, and Connor). I was looking back at the Top 100 for Sporting News going into 04 a while back and thought how crappy most of those guys have been.

Yeah, he was a 2-star recruit.
As much as I dislike Stoops, he does have one thing going for him. He's smart enough to recruit the guys Texas Tech wants because he knows they can find talent that others don't find. Stoops just hasn't figured out how to get the same results with those kids yet. He has to have better kids to keep the game close and still lose!:p
