View Full Version : How many non district games will Katy win?

Here are the opponents in no particular order:
Eisenhower
Woodlands
North Shore
Flour Mound Marcus
Beaumont West Brook
Simply pick the winner to each game.
This is hard. I really don't want to let my inner homer out... I think I'll take a stab at this in April. :D
Until I vote...
Captain's log, stardate 9522.6:
Ike: I think Katy will win, but it won't be as close some of the other games. But since I don't know much about Ike, other than I keep hearing "the swoop is back," I could be wrong. Their recent record and Aldine's coaching situations make it hard to get a feel for them.
The Woodlands: I think Katy can take this one in a real battle. You know, a real won-in-the-trenches kind of game. I'm hoping it's raining the whole game. Or snowing incredibly hard.
North Shore:  That is all.
Beaumont West Brook: If this game is later in the schedule, possibly after a BYE, I think we could have a great game between two strong defenses with Katy begnning to find their stride and taking the W.
Flower Mound: I know nothing about them, but I think this will be a cool game because it'll be the first time these teams have met and they'll be representing two completely polar areas of the state.

I'll be a homer and pick Katy in every game. The way I figure it, Katy is 134-15 over the last 10 years, so if I ALWAYS pick Katy, people will have to say that I'm right most of the time.:D
Having said that, I think it's way too early for a poll like this. Also, if this is the schedule, it will be interesting. This year Katy came out of the blocks and seemed to be invincible, but they usually start somewhat slow and build to a point where they are hitting their stride a few games before the playoffs. If this is the case, they could very well lose several of these games to very talented opponents. I guess we will see!

No, you tricked me. i thought it was, pick the games you think they would win.
Honestly, i only see them beating The woodlands and Flower Mound...the reloading takes time....IKE will make katy 0-1 heading into the second game of the season.

I will think they would have gone against history, and are even better of a program then i thought they were.
They usually struggle out of the gate after a super year like 07. Not to say that katy wont be well and ready come playoff time...its just that Katy uses the non-district for tweaking...so 2 or 3 losses isnt totally out of the question...but i expect them to be in the regional finals.

i think katy takes all of these games except for ike and north shore... seeing ike fall from where they once were and then seeing them rise back up in a year. they have serious D 1 talent in loston and timmons they have some monster d tackle that as far according to my guard cousin is a lot better than Davis from last year. the only question about them is of course how they respond to losing their head coach who i feel really related to his kids and keep them under control unlike the head coach at aldine. well north shore, i'll always pick north shore in a regular season game simply because they refuse to lose, until they get to the play offs

Tradition! Champions! Fundamentally Sound! Expectation! and let's not forget Coaching! Folks, Fans, Friends, let's not forget that Katy has lost 1 district game{fluke:D}, 2 Regional finals, and 1 State Championship under Caoch Joseph. That's 4 losses, 1 per year. I am not such a homer that I think Katy can't lose, but I do think Katy will win all of them. Bring'em all on! The '08 Tigers follow a tough act, but all of you thinking we lost all our talent are mistaken. As my buddy says, OH CONTRAR MORFRAR!! The Tigers will have plenty of talent. It may not be the super talent of 2007, but the 2007's only come around so often. Katy has won with less talent than they are bringing back this year. STAND UP!

I keep running into Katy players at the gym and I make it a point to talk to them. They are really excited about this next year and thier chances. They can tick down the list of talent and who to be looking for. Wished I was better with names so that I could tick some of them off, as it is, I am just glad to see the excitement and confidence they have. I think we will come out of non district with a 4-1 or 5-0 record with North Shore being the toss up. Wow, has the season started yet.
I don't know how legitimate the argument about Katy starting slow is anymore. I've been thinking about it, and over the past 4 seasons Katy is 12-0 in non district and has had all but one undefeated season before losing in the playoffs (2004, Joseph's first year as head coach). This is all under Coach Joseph, so maybe he's doing something a little different than Coach Johnston did that early in the season? Katy might not play their best ball that early in the season, but we've played well enough to beat Klein, A&M Consolidated, The Woodlands, Humble and Jersey Village.

Really depends on who you schedule out of the box. In my opinion if you play a team to open the season, that is supposed to be good, AND loaded with talent, then sometimes that talent is good enough to get the job done (see Lufkin 2003). Look at who Katy has played in pre district over the years and see if that makes any sense.

You honestly think IKe and NS will beat Katy this isnt the first time they have had significant senior fallout. We have a running back returning who isnt much of a drop off from andre. The biggest O-Line in a while. So right there they will be able to pound the ball. The JV below them was 9-1, and will reload just fine. The 2002 team that beat Humbles best team in school history twice was less talented than this. The only game im concered is NS. That is because Katy strugles with that offensive scheme early in he year. Maybe Beamont Westbrook.

Katy never played Humbles best team in school history.
Humble best teams in school history was the 95 96 97 teams. Featuring Leo Mills, David Givens, and David Boston... The 95 team got beat by the eventual state champs in what i call a fluke win (Roosevelt). the other two team choked against North Shore, and we lost Leo mills against Westbrook....2002 was good, but far from our best.
IKE just has alot coming back, and its going to be a battle...just remember..IKE is capable of taking it to Katy...last time yall faced off, it was a war...i expect the same.

anything can happen, it is football, but Ike is a big, physical, fast team with a very underrated running back, a top wr and a swarming D led by loston. of the teams on katy's pre district they have lots of teams that look just alike, ike and northshore. i think they have the others easily but don't count out Ike. but i wouldn't doubt katy coming out of it 5-0 but you never know

Ike RB is used as a WR, and really isnt that great of a runner... Their strength lies in the passing game...against a depleted Secondary(katy)..i see IKE on top by 7pts.

War is good at times. We get phrases like "Battle tested" and "the game will be won in the trenches" and my favorite "We hit the long bomb to score the winning TD" or "He threw a missle strike" from wars. You do remember the outcome of that war, don't you? It was ten years ago, means nothing. Katy has plenty coming back as well, people are forgetting that.

IKE is one of the most talented teams in the state next year. They superceed katy in the talent department...no offense. I have always been a supporter of the two programs...im just calling it how i see it.

Their D is..ehh. They are very good in Pass defense, but the line and LB core has been weak in the run. Especially last year.
I was referring to McGregor as well. He only managed 21 yards or so against Humble..and negative yardage against NS.
They use him alot on screens, get him in open space...he is a solid runner, i just dont think you can run him out of the shotgun. He is a Power I kind of back.

You can never count Katy out of any game. Yeah, they may lose 1 or 2 during the season but they come to play every game. Often no major stars on the team but solid 22 players that can match with the best. I'd rather have that than the superstar player that carries the team for a period of time. Katy will be in the mix again this year.

02 team was number 1 in state, and nationally ranked. There only loss came to katy twice.
That IKE game in 97' was was prob the biggest game in school history, it was the game that swung the tide and katy took control of the Houston area. But the game has changed since then. You can have talent but need the coaching to do something with it.

Let me clarify what I meant when I said Katy usually "starts slow." It's not that Katy loses, but that there has always been a definate point in the season where we see things "come together." Usually about the sixth or seventh game of the season you will see Katy start to make less mistakes and really start to gel as a team. Come playoff time they usually are firing on all cylinders.
The only time in recent history I can think of where this hasn't happened was in '05. We struggled with turnovers the whole season and in the championship that caught up with us. You can't make mistake against Southlake and we made plenty that day. We just never seemed to hit that stride we are used to seeing.
This past year was funny. Right from the start we were dominant and in the first quarter of the A&M Consol. game I remember my dad commenting that it seemed as if we couldn't do anything wrong......The we played the second and third quarter. We struggled, had penalties, and turned the ball over. When we got to the Cinco game, it seemed as if we hit that stride again and it carried us all the way to the Alamodome!

If you take out the homer votes, North Shore is heavily favored. This will be the R3 GOTW.
I'm not sure. I want to see 7 on 7 and the Red/white game. Replacing Bo Levi and Dean is tough, but look at all the role players that have to replace....Fuda, Avie, Graham, Benson, Alexander, Strickler...too early to tell right now....I know some guys will step up...just want to see who. One thing for sure is that the Tigers will be ready come playoff time.

Dad -
Think that may be the understatement of the week. I think most of the people on this board would agree that a Katy / Northshore would be at worst a statewide game of the week, not just R3. I know both sides have been hoping for this for many years. I could see FoxSports picking this one up.

That and the fact that they get a lot of starters back from last year. Even during the state final year, I do not think TWHS has had this kind of threat from the backfield. With that kind of balance, their always good receiving corps could really go to town. I've seen the kid who might start at QB. Perfect fit for the system, given the players around him.
What makes Katy a top 5 team in a lot of people's eyes? Just curious.

You have no concern about not knowing who is going to start at QB on this loaded team?
Katy will have an outstanding defensive line this year and if history repeats itself that means Katy will have a very very good defense. When you match the good defense witht the fact that Katy will have a huge offensive line and a RB that will surprise a lot you get an old school bruiser type Katy team. I don't see Parker Ray being the passer that Bo was but if he can get enough done throwing the ball to keep defenses honest then Katy will be very good.
EDIT: I also agree with Katy not being a top 5 in the state to start 2008.

The Defense will be great. The question is...if teams stack the box now....will Parker Ray and Wr's to be determined be able to balance it out the way Bo,Fuda, Avie and company did.

Fleeman, I do not have insider knowledge of the TWHS program. I'm making assumptions about who might start at QB based on who they graduated and who played JV last year. All I'm saying is, if Andy McCloud is the starter, that would be a very very good thing for them. If however they have somebody even better that I do not know about, then they will be in great shape, to say the least.

I don't think the offense will be anything like 2007. I think it will be much more like 2003 in that both teams will know exactly what is coming but one team won't be able to stop it. :D

The Woodlands graduated the house in 2006 and were very young last year. On top of that, it was the first year of the 50-50 split with College Park of the area senior talent. Never at any time were they ranked in Houston let alone the state.

If you take out the homer votes, North Shore is heavily favored. This will be the R3 GOTW.

The same comments were made a couple of years ago when Humble was the top team and was suppose to beat everyone around Houston. Katy took the first game in a close score and then turned the second meeting into a rout. Don't ever under estimate the heart of a champion.

I have no idea. On paper, the Highlanders should be favored.

I rode with Katy all the way until the North Shore meeting...I love you Tigers but I roll with my Mustangs through the storm, rain, sickness and pain!:D
Looking forward to the meeting however no matter the outcome. It's been a long time coming. Two great programs duking it out...Texas HS Football boy you gotta love it!:D

North Shore are a good bunch; they'll learn to deal... Still, it's a shame what we'll have to do to them. :D

NO! I will not touch anything said on this thread from dada, cavdad, or anyone else who has no CLUE about what Katy is about to do in 2008! :Music

Tish...Tish. None of us should put the cart before the horse. I thought you all knew that. Both teams have equal chance and you know it. State Champs/Former State Champs or not anyone can lose. So let's just keep it respectable as these are two great programs. With these two teams anything can happen. Either way it will be a great game.

I honestly would give the edge to NS as of now simply based on pure raw athletes. Katy could certainly win the game with what they have coming back I wouldn't make them the favorite going in.

Katy has been to state 7 out of the last eleven years.
It doesnt matter how much talent you have if the coaches cant coach it up.

Katy will pummel their non-district opponents

Katy will pummel their non-district opponents
If that happens in non-district then I would put them down as the favorites to win state.

No doubt it will be a great game...Katy has the players, Woodz has the expereince. I'll be there....an hour before the game...like always.
You better be early or you won't find a place to sit!
Especially if the game is in Conroe.

I'm guessing 11 non-district wins...just for fun.:D

Looking at the lineup and the team that is shaping up - it is not going to be a cakewalk. North Shore (in particular) is likely a very tough opponent early in the season.
Of all the positions, I would say QB is the biggest concern or question at this point. Let's hope off-season brings some added depth and balance.
Otherwise, it's gonna be a running game all season.

That's why I was just thinking. Obviously NOT planning for the future with only 9600 seats. Who would build a new stadium and only put in 9600 seats?

Conroe ISD politics, from what I heard. The initial plan was to have a stadium just like Galena Park ISD. But the old boys at Conroe decided that the Woodlands schools cannot have a stadium that outstages old Moorehead. So we end up with a clone of Moorehead which was designed when? 1960? And of course, to add insult to injury, whatever little upgrades we're going to have, like the Jumbotron screen, they have to have it at Conroe too. So some of the funds that were originally earmarked for the new Sth County stadium now has to be given to Conroe so they can pay for their stadium upgrades

If there was ever a better example of what the mindsets of Hillary and Obama are, this is it. Nobody should ever get ahead, regardless of their contributions.

IKE is one of the most talented teams in the state next year. They superceed katy in the talent department...no offense. I have always been a supporter of the two programs...im just calling it how i see it.
IKE has a chance to seriously crash the Division 1 party next year.
I agree.

McGregor started out slow, but picked up his production greatly as the season progressed on through district and the playoffs. I think he'll do a "little" better against Humble this season.

Fleeeman93, how do you pick against Katy in any of these games? Do YOU honestly think Katy will be 0-5 going in to district play? Katy has a legitimate chance in every game and should be the favorite in all but 1 of them. Just wondering why your thinking the way you are? How many of these games are set? What about Cypress Bay, Florida?

Oops my bad! Too early to tell against some of these teams but I do like our chances. ;)
I suspect not everyone from Katy took this poll too seriously... ;)

Katy could very well lose a couple of those games, but I wouldn't take any one of those teams against Katy in the playoffs.
