He was very good in Dallas. He has been the secondary coach in Jacksonville since 2005 and as a Jaguars fan, jtk hopes he stays where he's at.

The secondary was pretty damn good when Campo was our secondary coach. Like jtk said, he's been coaching the Jags secondary coach, and they've also been pretty good lately.

Not only was the secondary good when he was secondary coach but the defense was very good when he was defensive coordinator. As a matter of fact from Wannestadt to Zimmer the defense was pretty good. IMHO the biggest mistake the cowbows made was switching from the 4-3 with speedy LB's to the 3-4. The defense has been suspect since the change.

On top of that, his defensive backfields were not always that talented, especially in the beginning. Once Woodson developed, Kevin Smith was drafted and Deion was signed there was some serious talent, not doubt. The earlier years with Ike Holt, James Washington, Kenny Gant ect...were another matter all together. Many of the Dallas db's were castoffs from other teams. Campo gets more out of less than a ton of other coaches. He was a top not assistant and coordinator. His shortcomings as a head coach do not devalue those facts. Besides, with the way Jerry was running things around here you couldn't name five, active coaches that could have turned this thing around. We drafted like sheet and were in salary cap hell. I don't fault Campo, fully, for his hc nightmare. He would be a prime addition. I also really like the idea of filling your staff with guys that have coordinated previously. You can't really put a value on that sort of experience. Hope it works out.

Even better than just Campo coming on board are reports this morning that Dom Capers is interviewing today and will likely be hired to coach lb's and help oversee the defense. If both of these hires are pulled off, Wade & Jerry will have upgraded the defensive staff exponentially. Capers know 3-4 defense inside and out. He also brings the tough, in your face demeanor everyone says this staff needs.

Yeah, I've always liked Capers

Well, just got done listening to Randy Galloway and it's official! Campo is back as the secondary coach!

If Wade & Jerry score Capers to finish off this deal I'll be seriously impressed with the way they transformed the staff. No offense to the guys that left but Capers, Campo & Grantham are upgrades individually and collectively. With that group joining Phillips, Stewart & Dat the Boys should have the best coached defense in the NFL next season.

The fact that they have all been coordinators and 2 have been head coaches confirms that this is an upgrade. I hope they can land Capers and score the hat trick. The downside is they will probably be plucked to be coordinators or head coaches before too long.

That's always the concern when you surround yourself with quality people but it's absolutely the right thing to do. I also think this is a strong indicator that Dallas is going to have an aggressive, big offseason. I also think this implies that Jerry intends on doing everything in his power to win a Super Bowl next season. The coaching additions are of high quality and will have decent price tags attached to each of them. Let's get Capers signed, take care of our f/a's, make a couple of smart signings and use each of our first four picks on young playmakers.

We still haven't heard from Capers and rumor has it he's holding out for other coordinator offers. Does anyone around here have any issue with letting Stewart go and replacing him with Capers? It's a serious upgrade and the first year coordinator's insecurity is the reason Capers isn't already here. Thoughts?

Also, what do we make of the talks with 4/3 guy, Gregg Williams? He goes from being the highest paid assistant in the league to unemployed and possibly coaching linebackers here? I'm of the belief great coaches can coach any scheme and Williams qualifies but wouldn't that go against Wade's desire for 3/4 familiar coaches? How would this defensive staff look:

HC - Wade Phillips
DC - Dom Capers
DL - Grantham
LB - Gregg Williams
DB - Dave Campo

Everyone with at least coordinator experience 4 current/former hc's! If that came to be and the staff gelled there would be no excuse from any defensive player that would be acceptable, period.

Well, it's not Capers but that's not a bad thing. Herring is in and I believe that to be a good hire. Also, talk of Maxie or Thurmond coming on board to asist in the secondary. I like that idea.

What I have seen is that they were looking to Capers as a special asst./advisor and are still interested in this role if they can persuade him

Yeah, but some of the local papers are saying Capers has moved on. I have no idea if there's any merit to those rumors but that's being floated. Not that we have to have him on staff but the only way it could possibly have been a bad thing would be if the chemistry wasn't there. If nothing else, I liked the idea of having not only his experience but his demeanor. Capers could have been that coach to ride someone if need be.
