HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL INSIDER

Who's the best of the best?

By Trae Thompson

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

This area has plenty of playmakers, but who is the best?

There's really no right or wrong answer, but trying to come up with a list is certain to stir debate. So, feel free to read, rip and discuss:

1. RB Dimitri Nance, Trinity: Can you put anyone else here? The Trojans senior has rushed for 1,429 yards and 21 touchdowns. Nance needs eight more touchdowns to match Tyson Thompson's and Jimmy Dixon's senior totals. Both had 29 TDs in 1999. Thompson is with the Cowboys; Dixon played at Georgia Tech.

2.RB Jamaal Evans, Irving: Evans (1,225 yards, eight TDs) has shown his ability since he was a sophomore, and he now holds the school and Irving city career rushing records. If the Tigers' senior gets into the open field, forget about catching him.

3. QB Jevan Snead, Stephenville: The Yellow Jackets senior has committed to Florida, and is living up to the hype. He has thrown for 1,666 yards and 23 touchdowns (second among 4A area passers). He had just one interception in his last 68 attempts.

4. QB Greg McElroy, Carroll: As quarterback of the state's No. 1 5A team, the Dragons senior probably faced more pressure than any other area player. Also, he replaced Chase Daniel, who was a two-time Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year. McElroy, who has committed to Texas Tech, leads 5A passers with 26 TDs and has more than 300 total yards in three of four district games.

5. QB Chris Ponder, Colleyville Heritage: Next up is Florida State for the dual-threat quarterback, who has 26 total touchdowns and 2,547 total yards. His 314 yards passing against Haltom on Friday helped keep the Panthers' playoff hopes alive.

6. WR Clint Renfro, Carroll: He hasn't put up the numbers he did as a junior, but Renfro showed in Thursday's 41-0 victory against Denton Ryan that he can make the big plays, finishing with five catches for 180 yards and a 56-yard touchdown.

7. RB Kelvin Thompson, Mineral Wells: He has rushed for 1,241 yards and 16 touchdowns, and has 11 touchdowns in his last three games. He finished with 30 carries for 330 yards and three TDs against Weatherford.

8. QB Maurice Moore, Everman: The senior has rushed for 632 yards and six touchdowns and forms part of a dangerous duo, along with sophomore running back C.J. Jennings. Moore has three consecutive games with more than 100 yards rushing.

9. RB Roshaud Finley, Arlington: Not long ago, the Colts were used to having backs rush for more than 1,000 yards. Finley, who has 938 yards and 10 touchdowns, will soon join that group.

10. RB Larry Carter-Holmes, Fossil Ridge: One coach said Carter-Holmes is the best running back in District 5-5A. The Panthers' star is only 5-foot-5, but runs as if he is 6-4. He has 986 yards and 11 touchdowns, and finished with 243 yards against Grapevine on Friday.

IN THE KNOW

The top five

Five things seen and overheard during the past week:

1. There's a debate on about the potential dream matchup between Carroll and Trinity in the big-school Division I 5A playoffs. It's all about whether Grapevine and Denton Ryan, with smaller enrollments than Carroll, make the playoffs along with Carroll in District 5-5A.

2. Expect 7-0 Celina to have a more dominant performance against Argyle than it did Friday in its 27-21 win over Prosper.

3. Birdville's Jason Martinson had no catches Friday against Springtown, but the double coverage he faced has been the norm.

4. Martin quarterback Jimmy Kinley's numbers against Lamar were more of a shock than teammate Josh Marshall's. Kinley was 32-of-59 for 433 yards and two touchdowns in the 41-34 overtime loss. Marshall caught 14 passes for 203 yards, including a 55-yard TD reception.

5. Lufkin, No. 4 in the latest Class 5A state rankings, has played three games in 11 days.

Point 5 is interesting considering Lufkin is an ET school, but classified obviously as a Houston school. I guess the whole state wants Lufkin - lol.

That list of top players seems a bit lame to me. How about some defenders? And, Renfro is not having near the year as Jacobsen.

Think the bottom five (or the top 5) was just tidbits, but yeah, don't know why Lufkin got mentioned seeing as how this is a DFW paper. I wouldn't call the list lame, there's some pretty good HS players on it, but you would think there are some deserving defensive players, and the OL always get left out. Where's Sergio Kindle?
