I heard one school in South Carolina had a 64 yard FG kick which was their state record.

What was ours in Texas?

i know LV was beaten by Odessa Permian in the 1975 state semis on a 63 yarder

According to Dave Campbell's 2005 Texas Football book's records, the longest FG in Tx HS football history was:

67 yds - Russ Cowsert, Dallas Christian vs. FW Nolan, 1987

the others were

62 - David Leaverton, Midland vs. Odessa Permian, 1995
62 - Ralph Heaten, El Paso Irvin vs. El Paso Bowie, 1992
62 - Russell Wheatley, Odessa Permian vs. Longview 1975
59 - Jaret Greaser, Amarillo vs. Lubbock, 1993
59 - Jeff Jacke, Richardson Pearce vs. Carrollton Smith, 1987
55 - Colt Williamson, Eastland vs. Boyd, 2004

I don't see how that 55 yarder could be on the list. Phil Dawson had one in the playoffs with Lake Highlands that was at least pushing 60. Can't remember exactly how long.

I'm sure those were all that have been reported to the Campbell bunch. I would guess that there are a good number of FGs of around 65 yds that have been made during the 100 years of Tx HS football that have gone unrecorded and forgotten.

The record for the longest (DI/II/III/NAIA) college field goal is...
*69 yards Ove Johansson, Abilene Christian (W 17-0) v East Texas St., 10/16/1976

The record for the longest NFL field goal is...
*63 yards Tom Dempsey, New Orleans Saints (W 17-15) v Detroit Lions, 11/8/1970

And yes the record for the longest Texas high school field goal is...
67 yards Russell Cowsert, Dallas Christian HS (W 67-0) v Fort Worth Nolan HS (Texas), 1987

Didn't Jason Elam tie the NFL record of 63 yds with Denver in 2002?

and what was East Texas St.? Is that what is now A&M Commerce?

What coach decides to kick a 70 yard field goal? More importantly what is the kid thinking when he looks down the field and sees that tiny goal post knowing he has pretty much the entire field to go?

According to the rules of Madden 2003 my friend and I were messign around with the madden cards and hit a 100 yard field goal and that ball was still miles in the air and going with the force of a jet fighter. In real life however a 70 yarder IN HIGH SCHOOL is just plain nuts.

Yes Elam did tie the record...
63 yards Jasom Elam, Denver Broncos (W 37-24) v Jacksonville Jaguars, 10/25/1998

And yes, East Texas State is now known as Texas A&M Commerce.

(Note: Ola kicked a pre-season field goal for 65 yds in the NFL, but it is recorded as Pre-season, not regular season...as if that really matters in our minds....
65 yards Ola Kimrin, Denver Broncos (W 31-0) v Seattle Seahawks, 8/29/2002

I was there for Ove's 69 yarder in 1976. Probably one of my greatest memories I had of Wildcat football. It was homecoming and Wilbert Montgomery had earlier set a national career record for TD's. You may recall he had 31 as a freshman breaking Terry Metcalf's season record at the time. Wilbert transferred to ACU because he knew he wouldn't get any PT at Jackson State behind Walter Payton.

The weirdest part of any kick that long is just simply watching the team set up for a field goal from that distance. It's kinda similar to watching a basketball team run a play specifically designed for someone to take a shot from the opposite free-throw line - it just looks weird. The crowd went crazy - it cleared by a good 2 yards - and the current Abilene CBS anchor (Bob Bartlett?) caught it on film - but it looked pretty terrible - it was shown like 50 times that weekend on all the football shows.

I was at that game. Man, that was awesome. I believe it was the record then but don't know if it is still standing. Russell Wheatley was the kicker.

All these 60+ yarders are ridiculous. What, do they get a 20 yard head start?

I think Elam's is the most impressive one because of how short of a dropback there is in the NFL.

In the Longview/Per. game, it was a low-scoring game. Per. decided to kick the long fg because Per. had very little offense that yr. ('75). Russell Wheatley had kicked a lot of long fg's that season; he was Per.'s main offensive threat. What a game that was. Wheatley, BTW, was a barefoot kicker. When his ft. met the ball on those long kicks, it always sounded like a shotgun went off. I'll never forget that guy--what a game that was! I think Per. won 9-7 or something like that.

Elams 63 is great by any standard but think of what that compared to if it wasnt at Mile High Stadium.

The dropback from high school to NFL is no different jus that there is usually a block of 1 to 2 inches in high school and NFL is off the ground.

But i doubt any of these kicks would b possible without a slight wind. This past week when i was warmi up down in galveston a 5 to 10 mph wind addin 10 to 15 yds to my kicks.

True the 1975 Longview game was a classic with Wheatley's 62 yard field. It hit the cross bar and bounced over. When they lined up for the attempt I thought it was going to be a fake...Wilkins has briefly lost his mind..I thought!

David Leaverton would have made it from 70 yards easily! He had 45 Mile per hour West Texas wind at back .Cleared the cross bars and the ball landed at least 15 yards from the back endzone line.

If he had kicking into the wind that DAY he wouldn't of made a 10 yard field goal!

I think the craziest kick I have seen in person was the 2002 Longview-Carter playoff game. Alex Cammack hit a 48 yarder kicking into 15+ mile an hour wind. I remember it was sooooo windy that day. It was so windy that there had to be a person to hold the ball on kickoffs so it wouldn't fall over. Alex and the other kicker kept trying to just leave it until finally one of the players would walk over and hold it for them.

our kicker sheffield has hit a 70+ yarder in practice one time. but in a game situation? i dont know if the results would be the same.

when erxleben came on the field vs rice i assumed it was to punt, as tu was on the rice 49 yd line. when the holder backed up an extra yd deep, it became a 67 yd attempt which he made by quite a bit. the strong tailing wind was the key of course, but it was strange to see none the less.

If a lucky fan can kick a 40 yarder (or is it 45?) at halftime of a SLC home game they win a car. Considering all of these kicks, a 45 yarder shouldn't be much of a problem.

I was in Lubbock for Wheatley's kick and I honest to gosh don't remember much about the wind but remember it was fairly damp and cold. It was mid December. I was also in Ratliff for Leverton's kick. He had a real stiff wind out of the north as he kicked thru the south goal. Both however were monster kicks. Wheatley's kick was in the 2nd qtr and helped Permian in a 9-7 win. Leverton's shot did not have any outcome on the game. I think it just helped Midland avoid the shutout in a blowout game against Permian.

It's harder than it sounds...trust me. I've tried it from 35...once you get past that point...you can tell who the real kickers are.
