Their defense is playing with some intensity. If not for a dumb (and rare) personal foul, they'd probably have another TD here.
I'm duly impressed by how well they are playing against an athletic VT squad. Virtually all of KU's team is non-blue chip. Mangino and Co is doing a whole lot with a little.

I read this morning that Virgina Tech is like OU - they've lost four straight BCS games. That's probably not a club Beamer and Stoops ever thought they would be in. All HC's are different in what they bring to the table. How can you say Stoops is a worse coach than Leach and Mangino, when neither have led a program to Big XII Title or BCS NC?? In this case... they are where they are, do to having been under Stoops. Are they not?? There's a growing trend to being under Stoops. I predict Venables will be the next Stoops Asst. to become a HC.

I'll say yes or no on the Stoops part. Maybe they're head coaches now because they worked for Stoops. I think part of it is they were hired at OU because the Sooners probably paid to have a good assistant. Leach got hired at Tech because he was a good assistant for Stoops and at Kentucky. Mangino was also a good assistant.
No head coach is great without great assistants, but I think it's clear to see that Stoops was made early in his OU days by his assistants and that hasn't been the case in recent years. OU wins more on talent now than coaching. The talent won't go away, but I feel like it will go away some and OU will fall some more.

Venables will never get a head coaching job if he keeps producing and underacheiving defense like he has the past few years at OU. And Stoops has not won a national championship since Mangino left. Just watching the games though and you could tell that KU and Mizzou were far better coached than OU. Makes you wonder if loosing all those assistants is hurting OU.

I think Stoops will be desperate to win a National Title, next year. Winning Big XII Titles are common ground, now, and the better recruits will stay.. but the elite recruits are going to demand NC appearances/wins. I think the next 2 years will tell the tale. This team is young and very talented, if they win at least 1 NC... life is good. If they win no NC's... things will get rocky.

No it's not. If it was going to that it would've happened 3 years ago when OU was blown out by USC (55-19) and the next year OU lost 4 games and ended up playing/beating Oregon in the Whatever Bowl. (Though Oregon was ranked #5.)
OU NEEDS to win a NC, in the next 2 years.

How is Mizzou far better coached, when they lost to OU, twice?? OU looked like a bunch of Supermen, whipping Mizzou in the Big XII Title game! KU beat Va tech... congrats! FYI, OU would've destroyed Va Tech. I'd love to see Mizzou and KU take on WVU! And when they do... leave their #1 WR, most productive RB and 3 bigtime starters on their defense.. all at home! Then we can continue this conversation.
Simply put... OU may not have had the best teams in the country of the past 4 and 5 years, but you can make a case that each one of their opponents in BCS Bowl games were worthy to be #1 in the Nation or at least play for the BCS National Title! Tell me another team that you can say that about! (There's not many!)
And yes.. Venables WILL get a HC'ing job someday!

All that is well and nice, but Oklahoma is not doing the Big 12 any justice by going to BCS games and getting pasted....It takes away from the whole body of work of the Big 12 Conference...
AND, besides that....It looks bad...
Oklahoma bottom line just got to do better no matter what the excuse is, OR, they will soon become one of those meaningless stats such as Notre Dame being 0-11(whatever) in their last 11 bowl games and Ohio State being 0-9 against the SEC in bowl games....
If Conference Titles are common place for Oklahoma "sooner or later" people will say the Big 12 sucks if Oklahoma can't right the ship in these BCS games....Oklahoma is representing the Big 12 as Conference Champion

Absolutely agree. My point has been OU hasn't exactly played scrubs. And perhaps, regardless of winning the Big XII, OU isn't better than LSU (2003), USC (2004), Boise State (2006?) and WVU (2007). You can make an argument that Boise State should've played for the National Title (though I think Florida would've beaten them) and you could argue that WVU should've played for the National Title, this year. You can't argue LSU of 2003 or USC of 2004.. they both beat OU for the BCS National Titles.
If what you guys say is true, OU should be 2-2 or 3-1 in the last BCS Bowl games. That would mean OU would've beaten LSU in 2003 or USC in 2004 or both and won 1 or 2 BCS National Titles. That would mean OU would've beaten Boise State, last year, or WVu, this year, and finished each season probably ranked in the Top 3 or 4.
You gotta remember, OU isn't HANDED the Big XII Title. They DO have to beat nearly everyone in the Big XII South and also the Big XII North rep. So, I don't see how anyone of the teams in the Big XII can have an argument. If they wanted to play WVU they should've beaten OU out for the Big XII Title. They didn't!
OU represents the Big XII! But maybe.. just maybe the Big XII Champion isn't good enough to beat the BCS Title winners of LSU 2003, USC of 2004.. or an undefeated Boise State team of 2006 or arguably a team that is truly the best team in the Nation, when healthy, in WVU!
YOU of all people should understand that!

I'll go on the record right now and say that if Stoops gets blown out in another bowl next year they will call for his head. Conference championship or not. The inbreds aren't going to take bowl losses year after year after year. Eventually "Big Game Bob" better when the big game. Otherwise he might want to start checking out ticket prices out of Norman.

It's been hurting them. Leach and Mangino are very good head coaches. Stoops, Jr. was a good defensive coach, but not a very good head coach.

it always hit me that big game bob knows how to gameplan for a team that they face year in and year out, that they aren't good at new obsticles (i.e boise, WVU, USC, LSU ect.).
my guess is that as long as he is kept at ou, he will win the conference a good amount and lose the bowl game unless they get handed a weak team like hawaii or illinois.

You know that! The Big 12 is a very good conference. I felt that all year and they proved it in bowls. A&M is just A&M. Colorado put up a fight with a young team and OU is a very good team even though they got beat. OU's problem is the have better talent than coaching and that wins all year until you start to play more talented teams. Texas, Texas Tech, Mizzou, and Kansas all beat Top 25 teams from the Pac-10, SEC, and ACC twice. It's a good conference.

I don't usually report what the media says, but I heard this on ESPN 103.3 earlier. Brian Estridge and Mac Engle were on picking the Big 12 and the South in general. One of them picked Tech to win the Big 12 in 08 with UT 2nd in the South and OU 3rd. That's a big deal because I don't ever remember hearing OU picked that low. I couldn't really argue with #1, either!:D
That Tech game at Kansas will be a big game next year if my guys don't do like they sometimes do and choke on their own press clippings before the game.

LSU (2003) - BCS National Champs, #1 in Nation
USC (2004) - BCS National Champs, #1 in Nation
Boise State (2006) - Fiesta (BCS) Bowl Champs, #1 or #2 or #3 in Nation?? (Undefeated)
West Virginia (2007) - Fiesta (BCS) Bowl Champs, #1 or #2 or #3 in Nation?? (When healthy, no one can beat them, right now??)
Preparation isn't the obstacle. Playing, arguably, the best team in the Nation is. It's tougher to do, year in and year out, than it looks!

Nonsense...
I saw an Oklahoma team that wasn't ready to play mentally or physically against West Virginia....I believe they thought they would just show up and blow WV off the map...Oklahoma made WV look alot better than they really are by not being prepared..
Ok, you all were missing some players-lots of teams were...BUT, you can't tell me Oklahoma doesn't have enough talent to make that game respectable...
Granted, you are not going to win every game or every BCS game(LSU may lose) but, getting pasted 3 times and losing to Boise State?...Time to rethink the operation..(lol)
That's just my perspective....

Stop the excuses. Your basically defending the fact that OU will never be anything more than Big12 champs

Could happen... but umm, you still gotta go through Norman, Ok and Texas still has to meet OU in Dallas. Tech returns a ton... but so does OU. Plus OU has some excellent additions; some that were redshirted and some that will be Freshmen, but won't look or play like'em. Texas will be loaded and a serious contender.
Honestly, the Big XII might make a case for being the deepest conference, next year. OU, Texas, Missouri, Kansas, Texas Tech. And don't count out A&M, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa State and K-State! ;)

Blowing what?? Because of OU, there has been a Big XII team in, at least, 6 BCS Bowl games, 3 BCS National Championships.. and finish in the AP Top 10 6 of the last 7 seasons (Including this year!) ; 4 were in the Top 5.
Don't get me wrong, it frustrates me that OU hasn't won these BIG BCS Bowl games!!!

Should this coach have been fired in 1975?
1968 Cotton Bowl -- lost to Texas A&M 20-16
1968 Gator Bowl -- lost to Missouri 35-10
1969 Liberty Bowl -- lost to Colorado 47-33
1970 Bluebonnet Bowl -- tied Oklahoma 24-24
1972 Orange Bowl -- lost to Nebraska 38-6
1973 Cotton Bowl -- lost to Texas 17-13
1973 Sugar Bowl -- lost to Notre Dame 24-23
1975 Orange Bowl -- lost to Notre Dame 13-11
because he turned it around:
1975 Sugar Bowl -- beat Penn State 13-6
1976 Liberty Bowl -- beat UCLA 36-6
1978 Sugar Bowl -- beat Ohio State 35-6
1979 Sugar Bowl -- beat Penn State 14-7
1980 Sugar Bowl -- beat Arkansas 24-9
1981 Cotton Bowl -- beat Baylor 30-2
1982 Cotton Bowl -- lost to Texas 14-12
1982 Liberty Bowl -- beat Illinois 21-15

That's just my perspective....Sure, they took them lightly. I read several hours before the game where an interviewer talked with an OU defensive player about WVU's penchant for 30 yards plays. The guy said, "Us being The University of Oklahoma, we'll take about 28 yards off that play." They weren't ready and I knew it.

The Big 12 was real good this year, too. They'll have 5 teams finish in the Top 25:
Missouri (Probably 5th)
Kansas (Probably 6th)
Oklahoma (Maybe around 10th, but definite Top 15)
Texas (Shooting up into 11-12 range)
Texas Tech (As low as 24th, but maybe as high as 17-18)
The Aggies are not bad. OSU played well winning their bowl game. Colorado will keep getting better. K-State keeps acting like a spoiler. The Corn won't always be bad. Baylor will get better. I don't know about Iowa State.

Don't use Bear Bryant as an example for Stoops. He had a lot more than 1 national title when he hit a slump. I didn't see the early 70's Alabama teams and I can't say if Bear was playing better teams. Stoops loses to teams with less talent.
Besides the Aggies were waiting for him to die like JoePa!:D
