I don't have any clue who is the best kicker. Who has kicked the longest FG this year? Ortega has a 50 yarder. Who has longer?

kevin Ortega is the best kicker. Give me a kicker that can kick the winning field goal in a state championship game and he is the best. There are big time college kickers that have shown that they can't even kick in those situations.

I haven't seen too many kickers this year from other schools due to plano's defense. But sheffield has kicked it through the uprights on the kickoff at least 4 times that i can remember. He kicks it through the back of the endzone the majority of the time. And even the ones he muffs end up lookin like a good squib and go to the 1.

Hunter Lawrence I believe, he already signed with UT I think. I'd have to say Matt Szymanski would be the best, watching him against us this year reminded me of Mason Crosby and he's definately the best in the nation IMO. Haven't seen the SLC or Lufkin guy before though.

As for Westlake's kicking situation, when the heck are they going to put Justin Wang back in... does it have to do with his ankle? Is it still messed up? Goodness, Justin Tucker is TERRIBLE, good think none of our games have really been close or we would've lost because of him. He's missed like two in the 20 yard range, two in the 30 yard range, and the two from 40 range he missed terribly along with 3 missed extra points. They seriously need to put Wang back in, he probably would be among tops in the area and maybe state, he's got a freaking leg, everything from 40 and in are like chip shots. He had problems with nerves last year but he was just a sophmore and I'm sure that's all gone because his punting is incredible. I heard he went to some guy named like Ben Agasomething's camp, some kicking legend, and won the kicking award there. Don't know what the coaches are doing, maybe it's still his ankle or something.

I don't know who currently is the best kicker, but I remember Lake Highlands always had one and the one that stands out to me kicked back in 1991. If he was taking the field you could just add three to the scoreboard.
Oh yeah, I didn't know MIke Jones was a kicker. I saw his picture up top showing his grill.

Jamie Fernandez from Lufkin is a junior, 6"2" 205 lbs. He regularly put his kickoffs in the back or through the endzone and has even hit the uprights a couple of times this year. The 44 and 47 yard kicks he made last night would have been good from 55 yards. He tried a 57 yarder last week but had a high snap and the ball landed in front of the goal post. He has 55 yard capability easily. He is just one of many good high school kickers in the State.

I know who is NOT the best kicker. Klein Collins kicker does good on kickoff but flat out choked last night. Missed 3 of 4 including shanking a 41 yarder with 3 minutes left that would have tied it.

Never even took warm-up on sidelines before the kicks. Soccer player turned kicker. Figures.

Former SLC quarterback/kicker Kris Brown has to be on the list of the best kickers to come out of Texas. He has been in the NFL for 7 seasons with the Steelers and Texans. He has hit 77% of his FGs with the longest being 55 yards. His 2004 salary was $900,000. Not bad for a kicker.

Saw the Lufkin game last night and was very impressed with Jaime Fernandez.
He was named the offensive MVP and had 13 points: 4 PATs and the 3 FGs of 42, 44, and 47 yards. This young man put every KO into or out of the endzone. He is the best kicker that I have seen this year.

If you are going to post to this site, you should try and be accurate. Tucker, a sophomore, has missed only 4 field goals total. None were in the 20 range. He has also made 36 of 39 extra points. Tucker is now 8 for 12 after the Hays game, in which he hit 3 field goals from 40, 28 and 20. He also had a PERFECT onside kick which enabled Westlake to drive the field in the last minute and win the game. Finally he made both extra points, including the game winner in front of 10,000 screaming fans (at Hays Bob Shelton Stadium), to clinch the District 5A championship for Westlake 31-30. Tucker had a perfect game under intense pressure. Enough said!

Tucker was 4/10 at some point during the season (a few games after midway) and he HAS missed 2 with in 20 range. I could put money on this. He did come through in the clutch during the Hays game. That was a very hard atmosphere to do all that in, I was impressed. However, I still think they should be starting Wang through this season. I don't know if it was because of his ankle injury or what. He was named the top kicker at some camp at UT this summer and is being recruited by D1 schools. Tucker has been getting increasingly better throughout the season though, especially during the Hay sgame, but I still think Wang would've outperformed him through the season as a whole.

I'm not sure where you're getting your stats. Mine come directly from the statesman and the picayune. You might not want to wager that money about missing 2 from under 20. That didn't happen. He was also never 4/10. Worst was 5/9. Now he's 8 for 12. Please keep in mind that some missed kicks, not all, were due to bad holds/snaps. That's simply part of high school kicking. Not making excuses, but have seen slow motion video of some missed kicks where the ball was impossible to kick straight due to the snap/hold.
Anyway, agree with you that he has improved steadily and has become more and more consistent. FYI, I've seen Tucker make 55 and 60 yard field goals in practice repeatedly.
He has a very strong leg. Just give him time to prove it.
Wang's injury has healed as far as I know. He does have a very strong leg. Am not aware of any D1 schools recruiting him, however. Wang was taken out after missing a short kick in the first game of the season. He also had problems in early 2004 and did not placekick after the first 2 games.
Let's root for both of them to do well in their respective jobs against Pflugerville!

My stats are coming from the coach's office which say 8/14. Tucker didn't miss any from under 20, I was meaning 20-30 by saying 20 range. I don't think snaps dictate whether or not someone can kick the ball straight, and no kicker can blame the holder unless it's on the edge or all the way off the block and none of Tucker's were like that.

If you're watching the Westlake team practices, none of those kicks are Tucker's. Tucker does stuff with the receivers, all the kicks you're seeing in practice come from Wang.

After asking around, I heard that Wang was taken off field goal duties because the coaches believed that he was getting the kick off too slow in the Leander game. However, from watching that game that I recorded, it was obvious that he got it off slow because the snap skipped on the ground which caused him to stutter which completely throws off a kickers steps/timing, I don't know if the coaches took that into account. The coaches need to have more faith in our kickers. If one has a bad game, he's gone. That's what happened to Wang last year and would've happened to Tucker early in the season if Wang's ankle wasn't bothering him. By the way, Wang has been contacted by Oklahoma State and he went to see a Northwestern game and LSU game on invitation.

Our special teams looked to be in sync last game, hopefully it stays that way against Pflugerville. I've heard news that Zach Taylor, the incredible deep snapper for us has failed a class. That will severely hurt our special teams unless we can find someone that snaps as fast and accurate as he does.

I DO watch the westlake team practices and every day they kick PAT's and every wednesday they do field goals. Tucker and Wang go head to head every Wednesday, and every Wednesday Tucker outkicks him. I don't know how you can therefore say that none of those kicks are Tuckers. That is outright false. You have not been at the same practices that I have, and I've been there weekly. Tucker does practice with the receivers as well. He runs all practice catching passes, and THEN competes against Wang on kicks. Wang only does kicks during practice. Again, I agree that Wang has a strong leg and I"m happy for him that some good schools are checking him out. You are correct about Taylor not playing due to academic problems.

I go to just about every practice. I thought you were referring to before they do the PATs and field goals at the end, because in those they never go to 55-60 yards, but Wang kicks those while he's practicing so when you say you see Tucker kicking 55-60 repeatedly it is most likely Wang. The bad thing I notice about Wang is he doesn't really kick that much and work at it hard. When they go head to head Tucker does not outkick Wang everytime. I'd say they are about even on those. I've noticed that in those that Wang makes more of the 40 and in field goals than Tucker and Tucker makes a little more of the 40 and out. Taylor not snapping for three weeks at the least could hurt us a lot during the playoffs. Hopefully they find a good replacement.
