How many schools, other than North Shore, have had to deal with a running clock? I'm talking varsity programs!!! No under level stuff, varsity games. I am very curious.............

The clock at Dragon Stadium runs fine. It's running for every game. :)

it's been several years but slc v birdville went with a 12 minute 4th qtr. is there anything more embarrassing in texas hs football?

I was hoping they ran the clock when North Shore played Elsik. Is there a clock rule or is it up to the coaches?

I don't think I completely understand the question.
I don't think I completely understand the question.
Lets' say a team is up 56-0 in the 3rd quater....going into the 4th quater, should the clock continue to run, even when it's a dead ball or incomplete pass? Basicly teams are trying to end the game as soon as possible. I coached in Pee Wee football and it was a 30 point rule...if you went up by 30 in the second half...clock kept running.

All quarters in high school football are 12 minutes.

Just by yall not getting what I am saying, that answers my question. FOLKS, North Shore's last game against South Houston, the clock only stopped between the 3rd and 4th quarters!!!!!! Inc. passes, penalties, nothing stops the clock!!!!!! That is what we have had the last couple of years in some of our district games. That is a running clock......................

The officials will go to the coach of the winning team and suggest that the clock run, and then make sure it is okay with the losing team.

Last year, Garland played a game that had a 2 hour delay because of lightning. They were drilling Naaman and it was nearly midnight, so they agreed to use a running clock for the fourth quarter.

I would have have a huge problem with it if both teams did not agree to it, but if both coaches say they are ok with it, then I see no problem.

Victoria used a running clock during the 4th quarter of their 62-14 win over CC Moody last week.

In Louisiana district 1-1A, they do that.. If the team is up by 35 or more, they run the clock. BTW, that's the district ECA is in and they didnt start that rule until they were forced to 1A.
I think it's crap. The score should be what it is and the clock should run however it would normally run. If your teams sucks bad enough to where you need a running clock, dont show up.

As far as I know they do agree to it, but I just think at the varsity level the game should be a full one. I understand the desire to not embarrass the other team, but their are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string players that could use the game experience. It just bugs me and I wanted to know, barring weather circumstances if other teams around the state had to deal with this.

That's a double-edged sword. If you DONT run the clock...people will say you're running up the score. You want to get the 2nd and 3rt string players the expereince and reps...they go out and score...what do you do. No matter what you do, you get ridiculed. I remember when SMU came off of probation and played Notre Dame...the Notre Dame players would break free and to keep from Scoring they would just run out of bounds.

I would say that it is up to the coaches. This sound pretty junior high though!

I'd have to say run the score up then. It is a game and the object is to score the most points. Why would that be an issue?

slc faces this problem all the time, our backups score on your first stringers and its considered running up the score, you cant tell them NOT to score, but oh well, running clock i guess gets those blow out games over with sooner, cause when its a blow out, the 4th quater is sooooooooo boring

just glad they didn't run the clock against Plano East and JT in 94

We always take our time in the 2nd half if we're up by a bazillion in the first. Usually just run our 2nd string RB over and over again and hardly ever pass. I like the first half of the game but the 2nd is just way too boring when we slack off and only manage a FG. It kind of messes with our PPG and PAPG.

dragons08,
I understand being accused of running up the score. We get that at NS sometimes also. But do you ever have to deal with a running clock at SLC?

Fran requested the clock run for the 4th quarter in their 77-0 loss to OU a couple years ago.

During halftime at a game, I overheard the clock keeper say "I going to run the clock in the second half because it was getting to ugly." Only thing I enjoyed during the game was the band.

The running clock has to be agreed upon by both coaches. However, I have been at blowout games where the clock keepers were too bored to pay attention and the clock run unadvertatly.
I think that Point for or Point against a team is really not a good indicator of how well a team is doing. If they are winning then that is all that matters. For many years people downplay the Defense of SLC because of the points allowed per game. The only true stats that matters are 54-1 and 2 out of the last 3 State Championships!

Was there a running clock when Clemens played SA Jefferson? Score: 70-0
