It cool, every school has something that is unique. A college buddy told me that they use to pet the head of a cobra for luck.

Now that was a classmate who transferred in from El Paso. Heck of a baseball player.

I like the Haka. I like it because it causes lots of people to do some research on it and therefore get a better understanding of other parts of this small planet that we all share! Image, people in Texas looking up information about a rugby team from New Zeland with a very un PC name (All Blacks) that do a pre-game ritual that has been adopted by a group of kids of primarily Tongan heritage. I just thought this was a place to post enless observations about a game played by 16-18 year old boys.

I like the haka because it is original. No one else has ever done such a thing. Plus it is pretty intimidating seeing some of those huge linmean they have doing it.

The name "All Blacks" refers to the color of the uniform of the New Zealand National Rugby team. There is no issue in the "world of Rugby" in terms of PC.

I like it when the New Zealand Rugby team does it. I guess this means the Polynesians on Trinity do it. That's cool!

They sell those things all over Kuwait and I saw some yesterday when I was in town. They're like $5 or something.
We had people go buy them and smoke on base last year. They wouldn't let anybody ship them home, though. They look like something straight out of Cheech and Chong! :D

You don't have to appreciate the significance of the "HAKA". It is not meant to intimidate or bother anyone. It is a spirit thing and the embracing of a culture (Tongan) that contributes year after year to the success of Trinity.
It is rare to see young people who come together to say "I respect your culture." The blacks, whites and Tongans all participate not only the players but the student body and parents. It really is unimportant to all of these people what you think but perhaps you can at least appreciate a symbol that is meant only for bonding. Sometimes saying things like it makes them look like fools, makes the person who says it look the same way. Unless you know more about something, don't offer an opinion.

are we having a culture lesson, or playing football??? honestly go out on the field, warm up, and play football. We don't wanna see a team go on the field and dance just to intimidate the opponet.

The Haka has NOTHING to do with Tongan culture...it is MAORI, from New Zealand.
The Trojans shouldn't be doing a "Haka," they should be doing the "Kailao," also called the "Sipiptau!"
From BBC Sport Academy: (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sportacademy/hi/sa/rugby_union/features/newsid_3119000/3119424.stm)
The Kailao has been been adopted by the Tongan team as their 'haka'!
The kailao was originally a war dance imported to Tonga from nearby Wallis Island.
It's usually performed at public and private ceremonies.
The men, bearing clubs or fighting sticks, dance in a fierce manner that emulates fighting, all to the accompaniment of a slit drum or a tin box.
Hopefully the Tongan team leave their weapons behind for their on-field version of the performance!

'Ei e!, 'Ei e!
(Aye, ay! Aye, ay!)
Teu lea pea tala ki mamani katoa
(I shall speak to the whole world)
Ko e 'Ikhale Tahi kuo halofia.
(The Sea Eagles is famished unfurl.)
Ke 'ilo 'e he sola mo e taka
(Let the foreigner and sojourner beware)
Ko e 'aho ni teu tamate tangata,
(Today, destroyer of souls, I am everywhere)
'A e haafe mo e tautua'a
(To the halfback and backs)
Kuo hu'i hoku anga tangata.
(Gone has my humanness.)
He! he! 'Ei e! Tu.
(Hey! hey! Aye ay! Zap.)
Teu peluki e molo mo e foueti taka,
(Maul and loose forwards shall I mow
Pea ngungu mo ha loto fita'a
(And crunch any fierce hearts you know)
Teu inu e 'oseni, pea kana mo e afi
(Ocean I drink, fire I dine)
Keu mate ai he ko hoku loto.
(To death or victory my will is fine.)
Ko Tonga pe mate ki he moto
(That's how Tonga dies to her motto)
Ko Tonga pe mate ki he moto.
(To her motto Tonga gives all.)
The funny thing about the Haka that the Trojans use, the Ka Mate Haka, is that the All Blacks no longer use it. They have adopted a new Haka, called the Kapa o Pango (either "The Black Team" or "The Team in Black" depending on how PC you are and how you want to interpret it).

Don't worry about Harker Heights...you don't have what it takes to play anywhere near Trinity anyway. What do you do....the Poloka to Lawrence Welk?
